The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon is a high performance, water-resistant, ultra wide-angle L-series zoom lens. An f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and offers shallow depth of field focus control. The optical design has been improved to offer better edge-to-edge image quality. In addition, it features 3 high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo. Its ultrasonic motor (USM) and improved AF algorithms will help the lens to focus faster and quieter. Precise manual focus is supported even in One Shot AF mode and a truly round aperture results in pleasing background blur.

All of the "L" lenses deliver optical performance equal to similar fixed focal lengths lenses and provide tight seal structures for dust and water resistance. Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such amazing capabilities. An included petal-style lens hood keeps unwanted light from entering the lens and causing flare and it offers a degree of protection against impact and the elements.

Ultra-low dispersion glass and three high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo minimize aberrations and improve overall image quality.
A ring-type Ultrasonic motor (USM) provides quiet, fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking.
Full-time manual focus override (even in AF mode) is supported.
Circular aperture diaphragm produces brilliant out-of-focus characteristics.
A petal-type lens hood is included.

Fantastic wide angle lens that really shines on a full frame body such as the Canon 5D Mark II.I originally had the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM which produced good images with high contrast and good colour reproduction, but sharpness was poor. In comparison, the 16-35mm II is ultra-sharp in the middle and more than acceptable in the corners (even when pixel peeping), with fantastic contrast and colours. The AF is fast and the build is solid. Some sample photos on different bodies:5D II: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157757391/in/photostream5D II: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157760781/in/photostream5D II: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157758417/in/photostream7D: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157759497/in/photostream7D: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6158293534/in/photostream20D: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157752733/in/photostream

Lens will only achieve consistent focus mounted on a tripod. Handheld, it is completely unreliable at any focal length/ F-stop/ Shutter 1/250 +. I've taken it to Canon, documenting the problem and noting that it clunks when gently shaken, as though an internal element is loose. They returned it claiming it's within specs. It's going back a second time on Monday for the same issues. I've used it on 3 different 7D bodies over the last month and a half with the same results on all 3. With all of the positive reviews, I can only figure that I'm stuck with a bad copy. (Purchased when a rebate was offered, tested it on a tripod when I recieved it then put it away until after racing season started.)I'm only writing this to remind people to test thoroughly and return promptly if there is an issue, no matter how many flawless experiences you've had with prior purchases. Hopefully Canon will be a little more thorough on this next service call.

    Great quality

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

An excellent lens. Very sharp. With such a wide angle of view you will have a lot of sky with a lot of light. The camera will compensate for the light and the photo might be to dark. You can set the camera to a plus one, plus one and a half or two exposure.

I owned an older Canon 17-35F2.8L lens but I kept wishing I had this update. Then my old lens had a serious accident and I got the new 16-35. No regrets - the lens is awesome. I use it for weddings and for starry night landscapes and time lapse.

I like to have both foreground interest and lots of depth of field with my landscape photographers. With this lens I can achieve both goals of foreground and depth of field.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I seriously debated between this lens and the 24-70mm 2.8, but felt this lens would replace my 15mm and 20-35mm lenses, which I used a lot. This lens improves my results by leaps and bounds. At 16mm, this lens doesn't have the blurred edges that the 15mm caused, I can use a circular polarizer and neutral density filter, and I have a real lens cap with this lens (hated the 15mm lens cap so much!!). And being able to zoom/crop to 35mm gives me versatility, especially when shooting underwater (in it's underwater housing, of course) when you don't always know what you'll find, or how close it will let you get. I love long-exposure and night photography, and I am anxious for a clear night sky to test it out.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I've shot landscapes for close to 50 years, and when I made the (reluctant) move from film to digital four years ago, I bought the 10-22mm S lens for my 50D, and was instantly and consistently satisfied with the results. But, as with anything digital, 'settling for' are the words. And the second word is 'editing', as we try to make a still-increasing value achieve the like qualities of the still-decreasingly available film stocks. Thus, the 50D wasn't good enough and I bought the 5DMkIII, which still needs editing to come close to slide film. This lens is the (higher) equivalent of the 10-22, and I bought it compliment the 5D, and I've carried this into multiple mountain systems and a few deserts; I've shot a few hundred interiors (I also shoot real estate for agents) in the past year, too; and the worst I can say about this lens is still better than what I would say about the 10-22, and I had high praise for that one.I could use technical observations about the shortcomings of this lens, but most of what I've experienced--advanced parallax or devigetting--came as much or more from user error as any failure in this lens.Flash work doesn't faze it, nor does long exposures. This lens requires little of a learning curve, and the results almost make me forget the lesser quality of any average image compared to slide film (and, no, I've not forgotten, nor do I lament, the hassles of film developing and printing, since I still occasionally shoot film in both 35 and 120 formats).I might sell my mostly unused 24-105, but this lens will remain not just in my bag, but installed on my cameras, until they come out with a new version that does something this one cannot.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I prefer this lens over the Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens for the purpose of shooting real estate interiors. I shoot primarily new home construction with this lens. I use the Canon EOS 1D X (full-frame) body. Prior to purchasing this lens, I used the 14mm. The 14mm is still useful, but I like the results I get with the 16-35mm. It appears that I am spending less time in post production correcting distortions and verticals. Prior to the 16-35mm, I was stuck with either the 14mm or my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens. The 14mm was usually too wide and the 24mm was too narrow. This 16-35mm is just right! Now did I really need the f/2.8 for real estate interiors? No, I could have saved some money and purchased the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM for $ (now $ with Canon Rebate!) I paid $ and just received a $ gift card for the rebate - about 2 weeks after I bought the lens!In the long run, I am glad that I have the f/2.8 capability for other shooting options. I don't think I will regret spending a few more bucks.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Love how much more this lens captures in the frame. You can really get the whole scene while shooting landscapes. If you already have a standard zoom lens, don't hesitate to spend the extra money. It's well worth it, because the ultra wide angle gets in so much more. Really love this lens and I'm super happy I bought it.

I purchased this lens because I am an aspiring Landscape Photographer. This amazing sturdy lens is even better than I ever could of imagined. It helps create crisp, ultra wide images that I could only ever dream of before.

I have used this lens for both landscape and indoor use. It really shines for indoor low light work where the use of a flash would be cumbersome or the like.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I bought this after needing a wider lens than my 24-70mm f2.8L. I am very satisfied with the focal range and with the AF of the lens is fast and works wonders in low light. A little soft in the borders wide open but it has a sweet spot about f5.6.
Color rendition and contrast are superb.
