DX-Nikkor lenses are engineered and optimized for use on Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and are designed to cover the smaller image area of the DX sensor. When a DX lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon D-SLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.
The Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens is a versatile and ultra-compact telephoto zoom lens that offers a 3.6x zoom range, ideal for portraiture, sports or wildlife photography. Its equivalent focal length in 35mm terms, when used on a digital camera, is 82-300mm. It is the ideal companion to the DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED standard zoom lens.
The innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. It minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3 stops (8 times) faster. The Nikon Super Integrated Coating used in this lens minimizes ghosting and flare to provide even higher contrast and more vivid images, even in challenging light conditions.
This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation because the aperture does not need to be set to minimum.
Note: DX-Nikkor lenses are engineered and optimized for use on Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and are designed to cover the smaller image area of the DX sensor. When a DX lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon D-SLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.
Note: VR feature will only work with Nikon's D100, D200 & D1 and D2-series, or any newer model camera.

I bought this with the D7000[body only].I'd never owned a VR lens and it complimented my current walk-around kit; Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.4[night shoots/portraits and the extra creamy bokeh].I have an 70-300mm 4-5.6 and a 80-200mm 2.8 but the 70-300 doesn't have VR and the 2.8 is rather heavy for everyday use, so I thought this would work nicely for that purpose. I'm glad I did. It's perfectly light, the zoom is fast enough for my needs as I don't shoot sports regularly or for profit and it actually fits inside my smaller bag with the rest of my gear. It's not a fast lens @f/4-5.6, but for the price it's suits me just fine. With a tripod and the VR feature it's perfect for my night photography when needed. So I only carry my 80-200 2.8 when I reallllly need it; like events and such.I did my research and it was a toss up between this and the 55-300mm VR. I went with this one and used the money saved for a few other items I could really use; over the extra 100mm. I'll proably try to sell the 70-300mm for cheap, as it's been made redundant.I've check 'Poor in Low Light' as a con, only cause it is unless you pump up the ISO. Then it's a trade off. But in reality, if your need a fast glass that zooms, your looking at the wrong lens at the totally wrong price. Also, if your looking to shoot sports/action [kids playing, etc..] for fun, you should be ok. Getting paid for those shots[?], look elsewhere and open your bigger wallet!

Wildlife and scenery are two things I commonly photograph. This lens does a fine job capturing detail in whatever you photograph. The VR feature on this lens is very reliable when shooting hand held. The sound from the VR function is hardly noticeable. Although because of the lenses moderate speed you may want to have a tripod handy for shooting at max zoom. Especially when shooting moving or highly detailed objects when the lighting doesn't allow a faster shutter speed at max aperture (1/200 is generally the slowest speed you want, hand held, when zoomed to 200mm, full zoom). This lens preforms well outdoors but in doors due to lack of lighting you may find yourself using a tripod frequently. The lens is smooth and easy to adjust when zooming. the auto focus on the lens works great. Manual focus on this lens can be touchy so if your not used to manually focusing stick to auto focus. The Lens isn't overly noisy when the lens is auto focusing but its not a sound that you will miss. Even though it is noticeable the sound is not overbearing. The AF and VR switches on the lens are easily accessible and quick to use. This lens is an excellent starter for any aspiring photographer. The quality is defiantly worth the price.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens:
A versatile zoom that does what I need it to do, most of the time. I'm not crazy about the plastic mount (I understand the 55-300mm has metal), but thus far it has no been an issue. A fine lens, easy to use, easy to switch to manual focus and get fine results. Sometimes, the AF gets confused. I don't know if that's the camera or the lens, but it can be a bit annoying. Still, I find it quite good.

In my brief experience, the VR is definitely effective. Made pix--at 200mm--with and without VR. The difference showed.
Focusing is rapid.
A very lightweight lense, don't drop it!

I was in need a telephoto lens that wouldnt break the bank for a wrestling tournament my son was in. So my husband bought this for me, after telling him this is the one I want. I tell ya this lens was great. Being off the mat and capturing the faces and the moves so close it was awesome.

We purchased three of these for our field staff. Good quality, affordable tele zoom for DX user. Not a good choice for low light of course, such as evening sporting events on a poorly lit field.

The lens was damaged in shipment. The VR did not function. However, before returning the lens I did use it to record some action subjects at a distance. For the price I believe the optical performance is quite satisfactory. It is also a light lens that is convenient to have mounted on the camera for extended periods. I think it would be a good choice for a travel tele zoom lens coupled with the kit 18-55 lens, especially for students and budget conscious hobbyists.

I bought this zoom for my wife as a Christmas present. She loves it and I, myself have tried it and I was impressed. The autofocus is not as fast as my 80-200 f2.8, but my wife does not use her camera as a professional, so very fast autofocus does not concern her. I would highly recommend this lens. If you know how to use a camera, this lens will take you where you want to go.
