The U212 Deluxe is an all-purpose tripod. Features include rectangular legs that maintain torsional strength & retractable spikes for all terrain use. Each leg angle can be individually adjusted to compensate for unusual surfaces and ground level shots. The geared center column tension control gives just the right support for varying camera weights, and a bubble level establishes accurate vertical positioning. A special threaded panhead mounting post on one leg is ideal for low-angle photography. For shooting vertically with telephoto or zoom lenses, a camera locking brace provides a tight camera-to-tripod mount which prevents camera slipping.

I purchased my U-212 in 1986 & nearly 25 years later it's still a top performer. Soon after purchase, I did testing on the leg section & concluded that it will safely support 28 Lbs. (With legs fully extended). Because the original head is what limits it to 5.5 Lbs.rating, I replaced it with a Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Head (26.5 Lbs. capacity) turning it into a SUPER Tripod & ever since it's been my out-of-studio/on location Tripod. Due to its unique design/individual leg adjustment, it is the most versatile Tripod I've found.

This was my only tripod for nearly 20 years. A leg lock (the plastic collar) finally snapped last winter in sub-freezing conditions and I replaced it with a larger, simpler unit (Slik Pro 780DX).
Its range of setup possibilities was very good, but the overall height limitation was always a problem for me, since the center column had to be extended considerably for me to use when standing fully upright.
The position locks on the head always "crept" when tightening, creating the need to anticipate and compensate for the shift when setting up.
The leg braces were potential finger-killers when breaking the unit down or carrying it.
But... it was strong right up until it died, and I did put it to a lot of rough use. If you're shorter than about 5'6", the height limitation might not be a problem, but any tripod's center column should be an option of last resort, not a regularly used feature. The extension crank on my unit was never smooth, always balky.
The locking post/locking lever makes mounting and dismounting gear simple and quick, and replacement/spare posts are inexpensive and easy to keep around.
I would recommend this with qualifications, and would highly suggest that a buyer get some hands-on experience with one before purchasing. The price may make it just the thing for you, but be aware of the shortcomings!

Everything still works just a s day one...30 years ago. Of course it does have some plastics so use "common care" and it will never fail. It is heavy compared to some current offerings, but again I see no need just to change.

Comments about Slik U212 Tripod:
I've used a U-212 since 1982, and have never had an issue with it. GREAT tripod. The quick release head works very well, but if you get a U-212, buy an extra quick release camera screw, or have a machinist make you a couple of them (very easy, quick job to make them). They're easy to lose! Also, [@] sells a circular carpenter's level for a couple of bucks that works for leveling the tripod much better than the one below the tripod head - with the [@] level, you can place it right on top of the camera's hot shoe and make sure the camera, not just the tripod, is level. Oh, be gentle with the leg locks if you're using the tripod in freezing temperatures - they're plastic, and while I've never had one break in the cold, I can see how it would be easy to force and break the cold plastic. Other than these two or three minor caveats, the tripod really is a good one. You won't be sorry if you get it. Great value for the money. Oh, figure out a way to carry it - a spare camera strap works well - you won't want to carry this one in your hands.

Comments about Slik U212 Tripod:
I am a marketing coordinator for a manufacturing company and use the tripod for semipro product photographs. The tripod is very sturdy and stable but has way to many levers and swivels. It's hard to adjust the legs perfectly. Even with the bullseye level I have a difficult time getting everything perfectly aligned.

Comments about Slik U212 Tripod:
While ball-head or axis is going to be up to the preference of the individual, I can assume everyone will want to keep their expensive camera firmly attached with no 'wiggle'.
This tripod has the best attach and lock of any I have ever seen.

Just getting used to the way it functions. The support arms on each leg are very different from any tripod I have used in the past but seems to work well so far

Comments about Slik U212 Tripod:
This is an awesome tripod for shooting studio portraits, landscapes, and macro. It is sturdy and has an L-bracket on the head (I wasn't expecting that). There is a bubble level under the head position the tripod level, but the only way to tell if the horizon is level is to check the notches on the side dial and through the viewfinder. I really liked the height without having to telescope the center column. I am 5'7" and it is almost eye level when the legs are fully extended.
Only downside for me is the quick release doesn't latch on the first try every time, so be careful when placing the camera back on the head.

Comments about Slik U212 Tripod:
I like the weight of this tripod, it's not to heavy to carry, and it's not to light to be unsteady. Thus this isn't a flaky tripod. The only con I found was that the 360 degree panorama dial moves when you turn the camera. But that's not really a con, since we should be looking at the pictures we take: there is no such thing is as mathematically precise panorama. Thus that is a somewhat useless feature, but still cool to have. Overall; I enjoy the product. It's supports my 5D Mark II with an EF 24-70mm f2.8 canon lens (all together my heaviest setup)! It's stable, and it doesn't seem like it'll ever fall apart on us. My photography accreditation is located at www.circleshift.com

Comments about Slik U212 Tripod:
This tripod is definitely heavy duty. After owning several low end tripods and watching them fall apart decided to upgrade. This tripod is extremely well built and heavier then most. Me personally I like the heavier tripod. I know my equipment is not going anywhere. While this tripod is a little heavy I don't feel it is to heavy to carry unless maybe you have a really long hike. It doesn't mention it in the ad but this tripod also comes with a bag to carry the tripod in.

I've had the tripod at least 32 years, It's amazing it's still in production and pretty much the same as it is today, everthing I used it for has gone obsolete or drasticly upgraded. Now using it for my new DSLR, kinda nice to mix the old history, with the new.

I use this when taking video of basketball games. The legs give me lots of flexibility for setting up in very diverse conditions. I wish the head moved a little more fludily but it still is great for what I'm doing. It is quite bulky and large but not an issue for me.

I bought my tripod back when dirt was new, have used it constantly for the last 25 years and it is still as good as the day I bought it. If you're looking to invest in a tripod that your great grand children can use, this is the one. And the versatility is unbeatable.

I too have had mine for many years. Thought I needed a 'new' fancy one but I just can't justify the price. I added a trigger head and it also works very well. It's not a lightweight tripod, but it is a great value for the money.
