I haven't had much of an opportunity to use this yet, but I was certainly impressed with what I received.
I felt compelled to buy it after having visited Death Valley National Park at the end of January, and saw someone else with a similar bag at the park. I had decided, in the parking lot at the airport, not bring my tripod because it is cumbersome and I did not have a camera bag that would hold it. I ultimately regretted not bringing it with me, although it would have been a pain in the neck to carry the tripod by hand.

It holds a Slik 700DX perfectly well, and it has a sensible design that allows easy and quick access to various lenses, and other accessories without having to fiddle around with haphazard compartments, that spew camera accessories everywhere, when you try to open them. I also don't know what qualifies as a belt-strap, because the specifications on the website imply that it does not have one, which is not the case. It also has a strap that connects the two shoulder straps, when worn, for some added support.
The compartments are pretty well padded, as well.

    Decent backpack

I just ordered this backpack in preparation for a trip to Alaska. I feel like I spent a month going over every single camera backpack before settling on this one.

I just ordered this backpack in preparation for a trip to Alaska. I feel like I spent a month going over every single camera backpack before settling on this one.

    Things I like:
I got the smallest model and it's still plenty big for all my and my family's gear.
    It's sturdy, well made.
I like the pullout rain cover.
    Things I don't like:
The front pocket are long and odd shaped and doesn't hold as much as I'd like. I would have preferred larger side or front pockets. I space to put filters I'm using for batteries... it isn't padded and I don't see how it would keep my filters from breaking.
With the waterproof cover underneath the bag, the bag does not sit up on it's own. You always have to lean it on something.
The waterproof zippers are hard to open and only have strings on them to pull.
My biggest complaint - the back/side strap is not removable. It would have been MUCH better if this was removable.
There was no instruction for using the guide lock. Not sure of it's purpose.
Two small side pockets are inadequate.

If I had to do it over again, I would not have purchased this bag. It was too expensive to have this many issues for me.

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 100 AW Backpack:

My travel gear consists of a D3 and a 70-200mm lens, 24-70mm lens, and 14-24mm lens, along with a SB910 and filters and batteries. I expected to get this easily into the Vertex 100 backpack. I was wrong.

The bag is not deep enough for the D3 and the spaces on the sides for my lenses are less than 3" across so my 14-24 and 24-70 lenses will not fit.

The backpack has a good strap and waist belt and the outside pockets open all the way which is great but if my standard lenses will not fit inside the backpack is of no use.

With the outside dimensions there is space except the foam padding is so thick that it eats up inside space. No way to adjust the inside to fit standard SLR lenses as the inside fabric for Velcro attachment only goes part way insdie.

I could see how the bag would work for an Olympus Pen camera and its much smaller lenses.

I returned the backpack and bought the Bataflae 18L which has 3.5" spaces for lenses.

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 100 AW Backpack:

This pack satisfies everything I was looming for in a camera bag. Before I was carrying two bags, one for camera and one for laptop to PAC12 sporting events. Now with this bag it reduces my stuff to one bag with everything in it. Quality is typical LowePro, well built. And the design is well thought out. There's still only one strap on top of the bag that I can't quite figure out what it's for. Otherwise great product!

I carry my DSLR camera with a 18-300mm lens with all of the camera extras. There are plenty of pockets, pouches, and compartments to include more gear and another camera body with lenses if so desired. B&H had the best price on the Internet, with free shipping too!

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 100 AW Backpack:

Just received this pack to-day so this is just initial impressions.

                The good:
Plenty of well padded and adjustable storage inside the main compartment.
I love the neoprane grip handle on top.
The Weather proof zips are strong but slow to zip up.
The glide lock is good for adjusting the straps to the height of your tripod.
The straps to secure your tripod head are a great idea and length.
Rain cover is a good idea and when stowed doesn't make the pack fall over as long as you have the tripod holder fitted.

                The poor:
No double stitching visible anywhere on the bag, this may make this bag not so rugged.
Shoulder straps aren't as comfy as I thought they'd be. I'll play with them some more.
Waist straps don't sit on my hips which is where the main load should sit.
Tripod holder is just a little to narrow for my full size tripod but fit nicely with my Manfrotto lightweight, it doesn't like round rubber feet!

For me it's a wait and see deal, I may end up loving it..... may not.

Glide lock doesn't glide, it has two velcro tabs hidden inside that you must release then inch it into position.. not a complaint just a heads up for others who may be confused on how this works.

                Overall:
I was really looking forward to this pack but on inspection some of that enthusiasm has worn off.
The strap adjustment will probably fixable but some how I don't think the lack of at least double stitching on the load bearing straps and attatchment points is going to enhance the longevity of this back pack.... we'll see

Right now I use it to store my DSLR,SLR,Lens filters, and my tripod which fits perfectly on the front.I am looking forward to getting more Items for this backpack. The only thing I find a set back with this Backpack is the laptop part where it only fits only a 14 laptop.

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 100 AW Backpack:

My new pack needed to meet several key needs: Weather resistance (I'm often in the field), laptop compartment, room for an expanding gear collection, and comfort. The main and laptop compartment zippers combined with the integrated rain cover should cover me in most circumstances, though, admittedly, I have not tested them. The laptop compartment is very well padded and holds my 13" MacBook Pro (with Incase hardshell) with there is room to spare. Suspension includes a comfortable lumbar pad, hip belt, load-lifters on the shoulder straps--should be pretty comfortable to 25 pounds or so. Plenty of room inside for new gear on down the line. The only negative I can think of at this point is that the zippers on the narrow front compartments are not the same weather-resistant design as the mains.

This is just the right size for my D7000, 70-300 lens, and other accessories. I need a few more lenses to fill it up. I bought it to take to Alaska and protect my gear from the elements. A couple things that I don't care for are the small mesh side pockets. Not big enough for filled water bottles in my opinion. It is also not very long so the waist band is too high on my long torso.

I received this Vertex 100 Lowepro Backpack in the mail, and I was dissapointed. I am a smaller built woman and this bag was way to big and bulky. I liked that it would fit my Nikon D3s with a 70-200 lens attached. It had lots of storage space, and seemed to be built well. The zippers are a bit sticky, but maybe once they are used some they would slide easier. I returned this bag to B&H, and bought the Kata 3 in 1 backpack -a choice I am much happier with!

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 100 AW Backpack:

I think the laptop bit is misleading. You may be able to squeeze in a very small 14" notebook, but I feel the bag is designed to be just a camera bag and laptop carrying feature is more of an afterthought. As a camera bag alone, I would rate it 5 stars, but since it is supposed to carry a laptop as well, it loses out. The laptop compartment should have been at the back, rather than the front. I am now using it just as a camera bag and I have no complaints in that regard. Has lot of padding, decent space for a semi pro kit. Forget fast access to your camera though. For that, consider other models in the lowepro range. Vertex 100 emphasizes protection more than access.

It has plenty of space and storage for everything. It also will fit in bulkhead storage when flying on airplane, so I don't have to check it. It carries my tripod and computer as well. I could not have gotten a better Christmas gift.

Comments about Lowepro Vertex 100 AW Backpack:
