After 3 years they are disintrigrating

      Comments about Smith-Victor K2RA 3-Light 1800 Watt Portable Attache Kit (120-240V AC):

After I bought these in 2006 I used them for a primary, then a backup kit. I upgraded to some omni and tota lights by Lowell, but these worked well for me (I wrote the review, Zen from New Jersey).

Well after 3 years of use, I had a bulb blow on me today (others have blown in the past, no big deal usually). When I removed the lens and bulb the light housing disintegrated in my hand like old bakelite -- it literally crumbled into black sand in my hands. The ring that held the lens in place was no longer there. The heat from the bulb cooked this housing inside and out to the point of it falling apart.

When I checked my other two lights, I noticed similar pieces were dried out and broken off the light. I've used the same brand and wattage of bulbs (600W Ushio) since I bought the kit.

So, overall, this seemed like a good kit that cost me about $100 a year over 3 years before today -- it more than paid for itself, but I'm taking it down to 1 stars for the product simply falling apart from being built from shoddy materials. Inexcusable.

The last thing was, the lights always smelled bad when in use and sometimes smoked. There was a note on each light at purchase that said this was the "coating" on the housing "curing". To me it smelled like a few rubber bands frying on an electric stove top. I guess that smell was these casings burning up slowly over time.

So, for $300 you get what you pay for. Other light kits (tota lights, omni lights) can be purchased used online for around the same dough which will serve you longer. Buyer Beware.

      Comments about Smith-Victor K2RA 3-Light 1800 Watt Portable Attache Kit (120-240V AC):

I bought this kit almost six years ago and it has gone through some HEAVY use. It has plastic connections that Ive had to repair with epoxy a few times, but for the price it has been a very able little kit. I am just now on looking for an upgrade to replace it.

Good small light kit for interviews

      By Zen

      Comments about Smith-Victor K2RA 3-Light 1800 Watt Portable Attache Kit (120-240V AC):

Clean white lights in a small kit that weighs under 20 lbs.,Add a pair of swivel umbrella adapters ($18-28), and a whiteand silver umbrella ($10 and $20) and you are set for mostany shoot in a corporate or indoor sitdown ENG setting. This is a great starter kit for someone who wants to spendunder $350 for a 3 light kit. You can add barndoors if youneed them down the road for $60 per light, but since I useumbrellas for most of my lighting needs, I doubt I'm goingto need more than one in the future as I turn the 3rd lightinto a backlight for crowning the interviewee's hair. Theyrun hot, so have a well ventilated room, and you'll need to'burn them in' for 20 mins to cure the paint. There aretags on the lights stating they will smoke a bit if youdon't do this, and they were right. Once I burned them inand let them cool down they worked great. Stop rentingkits, and own this one to start out as you build your business.

Problems Encountered: Lights smoke when you first plug them in, they will requirea 20 minute 'burn in' period before you use them to 'curethe paint'. Stands are a little chinsey, but do the trick. Cords could be a little longer, but nothing an extensioncord cannot fix.

      Previous Equivalent Items Owned: None

Items I Recommend: Umbrella Bracket with Swivel Mount and Flash Shoe (IMBSM), 32 silver umbrella (WEU32SB), 33 white umbrella (IMU33T)
