We purchased this product to use at a formal banquet. We wanted to be able to take photos of singles, couples and families in their formal wear to commemorate their evening. The goal was for them to have their picture taken, pay, and walk away with a framed photo. We pulled it off!! We had some printer issues, but the light kit was a good help. The lighting wasn't superb, but it definitely added something beneficial. Would've like more lighting. One complaint: one of the two bulbs burnt out the very first time we plugged it in and turned it on. I mean, it actually popped, blew a hole in the glass. So we had to buy our own replacement buls due to time.

For the price, I did not expect heavy duty tripods or very bright lights. It met my expectations. [...] The instructions were included and were easy to read. The 32" umbrellas, while looking pretty (and almost semi-professional) did not provide any additional functionality. I removed them. For macro photography, with the object on the floor, I ended up putting the tripods in their lowest position (base of light 30" from floor) and pointed the two toward the object; one on each side. The lighting was sufficient for my purposes. As for the locking screws: the tripods have hollow tubes. In each, a hole was drilled and tapped. They are made of a soft metal and the finger-tighten screws strip easily. I have to be very careful to avoid stripping the screws while trying to lock the lights at a given position. The umbrellas, although lightweight, made the problem worse. Eventually, I will need to retap the holes (and void the 2-year warranty). Apart from that, the tripods are reasonably sturdy and the bulbs were in good condition after shipment. Each power cord is 9 feet long - convenient for directly plugging into the wall. I would recommend these as a novice photographer's first set of lights.

When I opened the box I was surprised that there were no directions on how to assemble this kit.. At all.. The mount that held the light was in pieces and I needed to look on YouTube to find the right directions on how to piece it together. Works pretty well! For the price of this kit and what you get, you can't beat it.

I use these lights for portrait photography, mainly. I am a very petite person and although i will have someone else setting them up they are very light in weight. And surprisingly that does not take away from the quality and durability of the set. It would have been great if it could come with a carrying case.

We bought several kits for a party to create some visual interest and add additional lighting for the photographer that we hired. It fit really well into our fashion oriented theme and they were inexpensive enough that we didn't have to worry about them getting knocked over or damaged. We had looked at renting something but at this price it made more sense to buy. The lights do get very hot.

Very happy with this light kit. Wide leg stance keeps lights balanced even extended to 8'. Perfect for the 12 x 12 video studio we're putting together. The only negative is the 250 watt bulbs. Even with the umbrellas they were too bright and made the subject squint. We bought 100 watt replacements that worked much better. A darker umbrella or thick diffusion paper would help as well.

I doubt, and i did my research, that you can be find a better basic set of lights for the price you will pay for this one.
Everything in the set is well made and will last. It is simple enough to assemble and use.
I highly recommend it for the beginner and even intermediate.
Buy an extra pair of bulbs. They only last about 60hrs.
it does not come with a carrying bag but for the price i don't mind.

From the moment I opened the box I was worried that I might have gone too thrifty because the lights and light stands are cheap and flimsy. I put one light together to try it out and was impressed that it worked, but literally within 3 minutes it started flickering and then it dimmed for a minute before going off completely.

I'm sure I just got a bad bulb or something, but I took no chances and returned it the next day for a single light kit that was around the same price.

                                Comments about Smith-Victor KT500U 2-Light 500 Watt Thrifty Basic Umbrella Kit (120V):

It is a good kit for who starts to learn the basic photography lighting. As named, the kit is very basic. Good thing is that the kit is quite easy to set up and the included brochure simply illustrates some basic lighting modes the beginners can follow. I have a little trouble with the socket. After screwed up the reflector, the socket could be accidentally loose. I figured out that after two bulbs were burned off.

One of two 5/8" stand mount has some defects, it does not fit well with the stand pole top. Another one is good, and I compared two mount fixtures but cannot figure out why.

The umbrella works OK. Since each bulb is only 250W, the bounce light from such uncoated umbrella is not bright enough. I alway light "through" umbrella instead of "bounce" by it.

Anyway, for such a reasonable price, I don't expect too much and am satisfied with this kit. It WORKS! but don't forget to stock extra bulbs in your home.

                                Comments about Smith-Victor KT500U 2-Light 500 Watt Thrifty Basic Umbrella Kit (120V):

It's true this product is a nice starter set, and the lights are easy to set up and move around as needed. However, both bulbs only lasted about an hour. Not cool (hence why I'm giving this 3 stars instead of 4). So if you're dead-set on purchasing this product, make sure you purchase extra bulbs. Some kind of carrying kit would be a good idea too, because the cardboard box it ships in doesn't quite cut it long term.
