As a photo enthusiast I use this ball head atop my Induro C-113 carbon fiber tripod, mostly for outdoor/ landscape photography. The ball head is smooth and easy to lock in any position. The locking mechanism is firm, yet easy to adjust. I was worried the screw-type camera platform wouldn't support my longer lenses when shooting in portrait mode, but the large grip makes it easy to fully tighten the ball head to the camera with no slippage. The ball and pan mechanism are very smooth. Having used quick release camera platforms exclusively before, I sometimes need to remind myself to not only unlock the ball head, but release the friction adjustment fully before trying to unscrew the camera. Overall I think the build quality is excellent and the head does everything I was hoping it would. I would definitely recommend this head to others looking for a quality ball head at a reasonable price.

Perhaps this will be the first fair review of this particular tripod head. I've been using this head for the past year as a replacement to an old tilt/pan head that finally bit the dust. I have found this head to be sturdy and very smooth. The major issue is that the ball head tends to creep over time, even after locking it down completely. Perhaps this is due to my setup: I shoot with a Mamiya645, Nikon F5 and Nikon D700, all with heavy glass. Neither of these setups weighs close to 20 pounds, yet the head position creeps over time. The stated weight rating by the manufacturer is clearly inaccurate.

This is a huge improvement over my Manfrotto grip head. Super smooth knobs for friction, ball head release. Easily retrofitted Wimberly QR.

glides nicely and pans smooth. the friction adjustment is nice to allow a stable head and allow quick movement with some pressure when needed.

Comments about Giottos MH-1301 Pro Series II Ballhead with MH-300C Camera Platform:

I was using the Manfrotto 3025 3D Junior Tripod Head which has a great range of movement and settings, but was tedious and time consuming to adjust. The Giottos 1301 allows for quick adjustments and the independent panning is very useful. With a rating of 20 lbs. it holds all my gear solidly with no sign of creeping. I prefer to not use a quick release and as opposed to some reviews I have seen, the MH-300C platform works well with no problems attaching or removing the camera. It is a very nice, light weight, strong ballhead at a great price.

This ballhead is really a good solid piece of equipment. The adjustment knobs have a nice smooth feel to them and lock down the ball very securly.I know you can pay alot more money for a ballhead but I wonder why you would when you can get this one for a very modest price.

I considered ponying up for a Kirk or RRS ballhead but then I had a little problem... cash. I find the Giottos to be a good alternative for non-professional use. It's solid when my D300 and 70-200VR are mounted. It's a quantum leap over cheaper pan & tilt heads I've used. I replaced the MH-300C with a Giottos MH-657 Arca clamp & plate. The MH-300C was pretty useless. I mount the head on Slik 700DX legs to make a solid $250ish tripod/head combo.

I use this ballhead on my small travel tripod, a Giottos MT-9240. It's smooth, strong enough to steadily hold my D300 + MB-D10 + 70-200mm lens, compact and light.

I did replace the locking plate with a RRS plate for compatability with all of my camera and lens plates. Recommended!
