I gave it 4 stars because it seems to be a little less than versatile.
If you're going to want hard light AND soft light in one kit while being able to keep the light from shooting everywhere, this probably isn't your kit. Of course, if you find one for this price that'll do both well then let me know.
It's a softbox kit and you don't have many options outside of that. You can get the light a little harder by losing the diffusion from the box but I don't think you could use a gobo or cucaloris with one of the lights and expect decent results. The reflecting surface behind the bulb isn't so much a concave mirror as it is flat brushed steel so it really bounces the light everywhere.
There's really no housing for the bulb in the fixture. It just sticks off the front. So you have to take it out before you pack it up. That's kind of a negative, but they cool down pretty quick for as hot as they get.
And since they stick off the front, you need to be that much more careful when affixing the softbox.
I thought the softboxes were easier to put together than Chimera brand.
The stands do what they're supposed to do.
The lights themselves make noise. Like an "EEEEEEEEEE" that gets louder the dimmer you go.
If you're taking photos, not a problem. Video: a boom mic would likely be sensitive to it but you could probably get away with a lav or camera mic depending on the proximity of the light to the mic.
The case is great and the whole kit is really light when it's all packed up. There's even a little room to spare for my C47's.

Bottom line, if you need a softbox kit for photography and you don't have or want to spend a lot of money, this is the one you want.

Use this kit mainly for indoor portrait photography.

I like the kit- it does what I need it to do. It produces wonderfully even, diffused light. The dimming feature is great, since I shoot in a small room and heat can become a major problem. But, it's nice to know that if I ever move to a larger space, I have the extra power to work with.

    Only problems:

The soft boxes were a little difficult to assemble, so I don't think I'll ever be breaking them down, which is a shame because it comes with a nice travel bag (no wheels, though). Kit does not come with assembly instructions. If you look it up on YouTube, a great instruction video will come up.

The dimmer on one of the three lights stopped working after I first used it. But it comes with a 1-year warranty, so I expect to put that to good use.

Comments about Savage Variable Power 3 Quartz Light Kit (120VAC):

Before buying these lights I had the worst experience buying lights that were affordable. I had almost given up hope until I tried this lighting kit. I could not be more pleased with this product. I read people would have problems with the soft-box assembly, however if you have experience with lighting equipment it is actually quite simple. The quality of this light is very good for the price you pay and I would recommend this kit to other professionals trying to cut their costs a bit.

Comments about Savage Variable Power 3 Quartz Light Kit (120VAC):

I use these at our office to light our corporate portrait photos and videos we do (mostly interviews). I was impressed with the quality of the lights when I first opened them.

      but...

You do get what you pay for. The cheapness shows in the stands, not sure how long they will last thankfully we are not using them every day. Also in the soft box set up. You loose time trying to set this package up. Lastly there is nothing on the lights to protect the bulbs. There is a cover that goes over the head to protect the conection but you can't leave the bulb in the light with the cover. So I am constantly puting in and taking out the bulb. Again this is a time thing but moreso I don't like touching the bulb. I use gloves but I know its not good for it.

Other than that, if your looking for a good cheap light kit I would recommend these. If your willing to spend more and get something designed a little better than do that.

Comments about Savage Variable Power 3 Quartz Light Kit (120VAC):

Three nice big softboxes, perfect for studio work, and comes in a carry case that bundles up nicely. At 24" x 32" and topping off over 7ft tall, these things take up a lot of real estate. So when shooting in an environment with lots of activity, you may want to sandbag them. Power cables are extra long (10'+), nice!Well constructed, but 'pricey'; $(w/shipping) for 3 lights is a little steep. I wish they offered a single or double bundles instead of only a triple. Dimmers are barely audible when turned all the way up, but very audible as the lights are dimmed (not conducive to videography, but I'll probably only ever shoot at full intensity anyway).Price is the only reason they didn't get all 5 stars. Also, I didn't get the 1000 watt/box kit (Mfr # M311000) because I wasn't sure how much sound would be generated from the fans. But it might be worth it to get the extra 500 watts per light (more light = longer throw = more coverage/better scene lighting).

I use this kit as a three fill lights for a green screen room at work. They do a good job of filling and back-lighting. It is very easy to assemble and has a decent carry bag. If you need to ship it, I'd make sure to take the bulbs out from the lights, plus ship the whole setup in a hard case of some kind...if not you'll probably have a lot of broken pieces. Overall a pretty good light set up for the money.

Cons: One of the Softbox covers was torn when we received the product.

Product is extremely difficult for one person to assemble. I purchased this to use for on-location shoots and the assembly process is so lengthy that I have to transport the fully assembled softboxes. Big con - NO instructions came with this product.

I am using these lights for a homemade video studio. These lights are nice and bright. They do give off a lot of heat but I expect that from 1000 watt bulbs.

The softboxes were tricky to assemble at first but now that I know how they work, I have no worries about disassembling them as needed. The key is in the one softbox wire with a ball on it. It is the last one you use to create the square.

About the only criticism I have about these lights is that the lighting cover for the softboxes are made smaller than the lights. Not really a big deal however.

This is an excellent lighting kit for the price. I would highly recommend it. At full power they give off wonderful, even white light.

The kit came packaged really well by B&H. Everything was there and everything was well packed to avoid any issues. The rest of the reviews are correct --- there are no instructions. But it was pretty easy to figure out. The most difficult part to figure out were the softboxes but I youtubed how to put softboxes together and was all set.

The carrying case zipper was wonky from the moment i took the bag out. It still has an issue but I need to use it too often to send back and get a new one. Luckily the straps also keep the bag tightly closed so it's not a huge deal. Hopefully the zipper situation won't get worse.

The lights work great (yes, they're hot but you deal with it) and create a nice tone. They do show up a bit yellow in some situations, but simple editing takes care of that. Overall, I'm very satisfied.
