The Audio Technica AT875 is a short shotgun condenser microphone that measures only seven inches in length and exhibits the sound quality and performance of larger, higher-priced shotgun microphones. The AT875 addresses the needs of videographers who prefer a short microphone that stays out of the frame, and efficiently rejects off-axis noise.

The smooth, natural audio reproduction captures every detail while a tailored low frequency response controls unwanted low frequency noise. The rugged AT875 operates on 11 to 52V phantom power, and a standard XLR output integrates seamlessly with some of the smaller professional cameras.

Purchased this to go with a Canon XA10. Great fit, and most importantly is the length, which means the tip of the mic/wind screen isnt seen in the lens.
The mic also comes with a couple of O-RINGS that slip over the end of the mic and makes for a good fit in the XA10's mic cradle. Another mic i have which i was using before i purchased this one i had to rap some neoprene around it to clamp it in securely.
It also comes with a foam wind screen.
If you wish to purchase a fur windscreen, get one no longer than 125mm (5") overall to go with this. Dont purchase the Rode WS6 (as i did), as recommended in the accessories, as it is to long and can been seen in the video of smaller cameras like the XA10.

I bought the AT875 for use as an on-camera mic. The mic is very ergonomic in terms of length and weight. I bought it with the hope that it would do a better job of screening out side noise and camera noise than my AT825 Stereo Mic. In comparing the two mics on my HVX-200, it became readily apparent that the AT875 was much noisier and picked up extraneous sounds that were either muted or barely distinguishable on the AT825.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT875 Short Condenser Shotgun Microphone:

I am a free-lance voiceover artist. The industry standard is the Sennheiser 416. But, that was a little out of my budget. The AT875R meets my needs perfectly. Sounds great and rejects a lot of background sound. My home studio isn't totally soundproof (few are!), but this mic rejects all but the loudest noises. I'm very glad I bought this mic.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT875 Short Condenser Shotgun Microphone:

I bought it to use with my DSLR and a TASCAM DR-60D audio recorder. Vocal reproduction, which is really all I'm concerned with, is very rich and natural, not at all tinny. I've used better shotgun mics but they were literally several times the cost of this one—and also much less suited to being used on camera. It's compact, and the pattern is right where you want it to be in terms of limiting background noise vs. being excessively finicky about where you point it.

If you have a sound guy and a boom and you want the best possible sound quality and off-axis noise rejection, this probably isn't the mic for you. But if you're shooting by yourself and you want pretty good sound at a pretty cheap price, this is the best out there.

I use this mic hooked up to a Zoom H5. It's a lot smaller and lighter than I expected which is great.

I have little to compare it to, but the sound is nice and rich. I found that the source has to be directly in front of the lic to get good reception from it. It really has to be pointed right at the subject's mouth.

I did some tests to see where I can hold it, and dead on yielded the best results.

I bought this mic for the Sony XDCam PMW100. It is a small camera so I had to get a short shotgun. I did not want its end to somehow get into the frame when filming

It does the job really well. Not only natsound is great, one day shooting a presser the mult box failed and I had to rely on what the shotgun had recorded...and it was useful, not great, but good enough for my editors.

Price is good if you are buying a lot of gear which is what we are always doing, us, VJs.

This short shotgun mic is perfect if you are needing a boost in audio. I use this combined with the tascam dr-40 and plural eyes for my dslr audio. I use it indoors and out for dialog and other audio needs. It is narrow enough of a pick up pattern so when boomed captures great dialog. The build quality is great and of course it requires phantom power.

I'm using this mic with JuicedLink preamp on my DSLR. It works GREAT. If you have some cash and looking to upgrade from something like Rode VideoMic Pro, I highly recommend this setup. Sound quality is much clearer, noise is much lower, and you get far more volume amplification. This mic is compact and lightweight yet it doesn't pick up the lens stabilizer noise if mounted on the camera's hot shoe with a shock mount -- this had been a big problem for me with VideoMic Pro. I went for the kit (with a shock mount & short XLR cable) which I think is a great deal.

This microphone met my expectations. I mounted it on a boom pole over my talent. The short length is also useful for my camcorder because it stays out of the shot even with wide angle lenses.

I purchased this mic to go along with my Canon XF105 for run-and-gun and documentary/event video shooting. Coming from the pro audio world, I own loads of mics, ranging from Shure SM57s all the way up to highend Audio-Technicas, Neumanns and Gefells. This mic holds its own against more expensive mics for it's intended purpose: weeding out extraneous sound while zeroing in on the specific sound source. Sure you could spend a lot more, but for the money, you would be hard pressed to find a better value in terms of sound quality, functionality and usability.

I bought this to replace my Rode NTG 2. I was using the Rode with the Zoom H4n and there just wasn't enough sesitivity from the Rode, and not enough gain from the preamps on the Zoom. I often had the input gain up in the 90+ range (0-100 scale). Now I am using the Tascam DR 100 II with the AT 875, and it is a diferent ball game. The AT 875 is very senitive and enables me to use much less gain on the recorders, making for a much cleaner recording, now I only need a gain of 3-4 on a 1-10 scale. It is a good mic for booming because of the sensitivity and because it is so light. Pushing the gain on any of the prosumer recorders is asking for noise and hiss.I liked this mic so much I bought another one. So I have one on my Canon XA-10 and one with my audio kit. I also have the Sennhiser MKE 600 which is very nice, but not as senitive as the AT 875. The Sennhiser has a little better sound and has better side rejection, and can run on battery, but it costs 2+ times as much as the AT 875. Between my Rode NTG II, the Sennhiser MKE 600, and the AT 875, I use the AT 875 the most!I consider a must have in my kit.
