this thing is beautiful. affordable, excellent quality. I used a sandbag in combination with the weight on one side-- this allowed me to suspend a 4' diameter softbox with three speedlights inside, no problem, with the arm fully extended. there are two segments to the arm. super strong. a pleasure to use.
I have heavy as a con, but ironically that's due to the weight itself, which makes the unit function. so it couldn't really be lightweight. That said, I think the weight is detachable should you want to put lightweight stuff on the end, or use sandbags instead...

The aluminum pole seems very light for how heavy the counter weight is. The joint where it connects to the tripod also clicks to adjust the angle of the arm instead of being smooth so I have already had problems with an art director wanting a MINOR adjustment because it's difficult to change the lighting ever so slightly.
That being said... there's nothing as good for the money so I'm not bummed about it. A perfect stand can run 500+ bucks.

Comments about Westcott Complete Boom Arm - 6.5':
I bought this arm at the suggestion of my Paul C. Buff representative when I inquired about buying a boom arm to work with my 4x Einstein 640 studio setup. I just used the arm yesterday for the first time to hold an Einstein 640, along with the Paul C. Buff 10"x36" softbox, as a hairlight. I mounted the boom to a Paul C. Buff 13' Heavy Duty (non-air damped) stand. I didn't extend the stand to it's full hight as the ceiling limited my maximum height, but nonetheless the boom worked perfectly. I would recommend that sandbags be used on the legs of the stand, as I did not have them extended out fully (lack of floor space) and the stand wobbled a bit.My only complaints are that this is DEFINATELY a two person job to setup properly. The weight, as the stand is extended, gets very heavy and ungainly to handle as you are trying to balance the system and without an air damped stand, the boom comes down VERY quickly when you release the stand clamps. I recommend doing all the balancing at about 6 feet in height and THEN raising the light up. Second, the stand clamp is a bit clunky and does not like to move easily, even if the clamp is opened quite far.... again, the need for a second person to hold the arm while the clamp is adjusted is invaluable. However, this is the ONLY boom arm I have seen that didn't require the additonal purchase of sandbags solely for the counter balance. Again, I HIGHLY recommend sandbags for the legs of the stand itself, along with putting two of the three stand legs in the same direction as the light, with one leg in the direction of the weight. This will make the light stand tip towards the counterweight instead of in the direction of the light.

I'm a photographer that does full body shots with green screen, blue screen, black and white screens for portraits, maternity, pet, and commercial work. I got the boom arm to hook on my 13 foot tall stand and extend a soft box hanging above my model to light their hair and help get rid of floor shadows. It's nice because it can extend six feet out past it's regular length and it has a built in weight to balance and keep it from falling over on your talent. So far there is nothing I don't like about it.

I use the boom arm to hold a soft box for a hair light during photo and video work. Lightweight, adjustable counter-weight, does the job well. I do find the clamp does "bite" the light stand, making it awkward to disassemble after use. A third hand would be helpful during assembly

With bigger lights come bigger booms! My old hot lights boom didn't cut it for my large strobes and beauty dish. The Westcott boom fit perfectly onto my existing heavy duty stand. I was very happy it came with the built in counter weight so I didn't have to fill a bag with sand or rice.

This is a solid piece of equipment, but before you buy, note you have to have a light stand with either a 1" or 1-1/4" diameter top tube for the mounting swivel assembly to grip. If you are fooling around with an Avenger stand, It won't fly....unless someone makes a large bushing that fits over the top of the Avenger's 3/4" top tube.
I don't think Westcott recommends this on anything other than BIG STANDS.

Took a minute to realize that the arm to lightstand adapter can be 2 different diameters, so be aware of this prior to loading it w a light. Gradually loading it and extending it and then testing (prior to having someone actually beneath it) over and over gave me confidence. Balanced properly it doesn't need sandbags...but improperly done its a danger. Get sandbags and your world will be happier for it.
Well worth the cost.

This boom was recommended by Paul C Bluff for use with my AB800s. Before I decided to purchase it I did a little research and found really good reviews. I used it for the first time last week and the pictures came out amazing. The set up was easy despite reviews of people saying it was hard to set up. For the price, this is a great boom!

I'm using this with a Paul C Buff 13', heavy-duty, air-cushioned stand and an AB800 with a PCB beauty dish. Takes a minute to figure out which way to attach the boom arm to the stand, but it holds very firm once you decide which hole to use.
It's very easy to get the boom balanced, and it's plain to see the weak link is the PCB stand, NOT the boom.

All & all a nice boom. Needed one desperately for my home studio to hold a monolight. Holds steadfast with accessories attached such as beauty dish & softbox. I should have measured the top post of the light stand...too thin. Currently using on another stand I have (on the second post) Need a new light stand anyway so I'll be sure to inquire about post size . The wire clips could have been a bit stiffer.
