Just purchased an Epson Perfection V500 scanner, primarily to convert the many boxes and books full of 35mm slides and negatives into digital files.
The "Great Thing" is the wonderful job it does in cleaning and color-correcting. It's not quick, but the results are excellent.
The "Not So Great Thing" would have to be the software installation and documentation. It took me 2 days of installing, uninstalling, and registry cleaning before I found the answer on an obscure user website. If you have previously installed any type of scanner or all-in-one printer/copier/scanner, remove the TWAIN driver for the old unit! (I will refrain from the obvious pun here.) It creates a conflict, and the installation program stalls, over and over and over. Once you get that going, it's a piece of cake.
Oh, and removing the slides from the glass after you are done scanning is easy if you just use a sheet of paper - simply slide it under the plastic slide holder with the slides still in it, then lift the holder away, and pick up the paper with the slides on it. No fingerprints on the glass!

well, ok it scans well...but it doesn't always recognize there are negatives and gives you errors. you have to trick it into knowing there is positive film. which is why i bought it, to scan positive film. and when it breaks up the thumbnails it is VERY touchy and isn't consistent with the sizing of the negatives scan. the trimming is off or something.... also, can scan the same negative twice, once with better resolution and it looks worse/less contrast & detail, than the lower res image. hmmmmmm? but, if you really want to put your film work online, and don't want to spend a lot of money.....this works. but i'm not crazy about it. oh, and the software is terrible...i should have listened to everyone else that said it was..

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I use the Epson Perfection V500 mainly for scanning old 35mm and 2 1/4 square negatives. It fulfills my expectations for these function.
However, I'm reasonably certain that I'm not using this scanner to its full potential for lack of a detailed user manual.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I'm very pleased with my Epson V500 Scanner. The Epson V500 is very easy to use and captures all the detail.

So easy to use, anyone can operate it. Results beyond belief. I needed a scanner for old 35mm negs and slides.Made several photos from B&W and color 35mm negs that were scanned from the v500. Resulting photos printed
8X10 size were great. Here is the kicker. these negs were 35 years old. Scanned photos had just as good results as the negs did. Well worth the money I paid for this unit. Slides were reproduced with the same great quality as the photos and 35 mm negs. One of the best investments I have made.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I've been working with computer equipment and software for over 15 years. Anytime I get confusing directions, blinking lights, and error messages in the first 10 minutes of set up, I immediately get the sense that the equipment won't last long. The user manual is electronic, and my first search turned up "no results." The clarity of the scans are the best I've seen, especially for the price. The machine is quiet and sleek. I just won't give five stars to a machine that's not user friendly.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I've had it for a while now and couldn't be happier. Originally bought it to scan photos, which it does a great job of doing, but I also use it a lot for scanning to PDF files. My copier has a scanner, but I prefer Epson Perfection V500 so much more. Easy to set up, easy to use, fits my needs. For the price, a very good scanner.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I've had it for a week now, but it is harder to use than it should be for larger slides. It cuts off where I don't want it to, and I wish you could just grab the edge of the selected scan area and resize it, but it never goes the way I want. The negative tray is hard to load when your negatives are curled. A groove on both sides would have been nice to slide the negative into, not just on the end.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I purchased my V500 scanner as a device specifically for transferring 35mm slides to jpgs. With very little learning time, I've transferred hundreds of slides - a family album - with great ease and terrific results. This is a quick, high resolution and cost-effective product. I could not be happier! A great resource for creating power-point "photo' albums!

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I chatted with the pros at B&H via online chat because I wanted a scanner for multiple uses. I needed a scanner to scan old documents so I could unload my many file cabinets, and also needed one to scan 35MM negatives & slides.
The quality is great. The size is the normal size you can expect from a scanner that does such things. The slide/negative is a bit clumsy for me, but they are usually like that. Other than that, very easy set up. Starting using the device right away!
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I mostly use this scanner to digitize my art work. The images are great and it is so easy to use.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
The scanner and it's operation seemed to be good. However, the software appears to be wanting. After about a year of use, when I attempt to open "Epson Scan" I get an error message "Epson Scan has stopped working." This seems to nullify the repair, correction, and editing functionality of the scanner.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
The Epson V500 photo scanner does a great job scanning photos reasonably quickly. My main complaint is that some dark streaks have developed on the underside of the scanning surface, and these show up sometimes in the scans. I don't know what this is, or if it is possible to get rid of it.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
This scanner is essential for those photographers using film. You can scan your negatives with this machine using the provided templates. There is a template for 35 mm film, and one for slides. I suggest that Epson provide a scanning template for 120 format film too. Since I shoot and develop my own film, the V500 is an essential tool for my work. Many of my fellow professional and art film photographers use the same machine.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
Installed the V500 with minimal difficulties. Had a problem with the CD that came with the scanner because it did not have the up to date software /drivers/app for my iMac with Lion OS 10.7.5. Had to go to Apple and get driver; still did not work. With the friendly help of BH Photo tech support, we got the rest of the missing software from the Epson Site. This took more time that it should have to get the Scanner operational. The scanner works very well, and converts my 35 mm slides with excellent color rendition and resolution. I'm pleased now that I passed the initial challenges of setup.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
After using Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner for a year I am very satisfied with the scanner. It has adjustments for all types of photos, black and white and color. It copies documents very well in color or black and white. I also was able to scan some old positive slides that were more than 50 years old and faded. They came out viewable considering their age and condition. I have 2 Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanners; one in my NY home and one in my Florida condo. I like the scanner very much and I recommend it to my friends.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
The Epson V500 scanner does a very good job of coping 40 and 50 year old 35MM slides. While some might consider it slow, the time needed to correct the sharpening and make initial color ajustments to slides made with a Kodak Pony Comera is to be expected. The Epson software sometimes has some difficulty recognizing 35MM slides with 1.5 x 1.5 format, but other scannners also have this problem. I have only a few of these slides and the end results with the Epson more then make up for the adjustments needed for these slides.
Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
The V500 was recommended by my office supply vendor as an answer to slide and film strip concerns. It replaced a competitive product which I returned. The V500 worked with ease and simply did what it was supposed to do. Although it processed only 4 slides at a time, that was more than fast enough so I could keep them organized while I was processing them. Both flim and slide conversion images were sharp and what I was looking for. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
Bought this scanner to scan old 35mm slides to digital format. Really good quality on the scan - preview feature lets you adjust brightness and other values before the final scan. One downside is that it takes a long time to do the scan (four slides using the ICE feature took 6 minutes to finish the scan).
