This is a great modifier- bought it to use with my profoto acute head ( needs a elinchrom to profoto adapter). I found it pretty versatile (3 diffuser- only 2 can be used when using the elinchrom to profoto adapter because of the offsetting in the adapter ring umbrella hole)

Most people rating this product simply talk about how complicated it is to set it up but realistically, after a couple setups it becomes extremely easy.

The 1st time you insert the rods, it takes time and might fraustrate you a bit but afterward, you do not need to re-install the rods; you can simply keep them installed and fold the rotalux along with the adapter ring into the bag it comes with ( impressive design). Once you re-open it to re-use, it should literally take you 30sec to 1min to install ( no brainer after a few trials) simply set it up on a flat surface and click each rod tip into the ring it comes with and add the diffusion panels and its a wrap.

The rotalux itself is a wonder, very well built, the material does not feel cheap and it is pretty sturdy and wont easily rip. for a more punchy image I would recommend having it with the circular plastic diffuser or the 1s panel diffuser and for a softer feel to your images, my recommendation would be to use both diffusion panels. Excellent modifier , you wont regret it at all. It is very very light weight even with the bag.

    * check out the photo ( test) put it up 16 feet in the air with my avenger boom stand ( lots of wind but it did not really twitch! )

Love the light, hate the construction. Mounting ring is very cheap aluminum and bent within 1.5 months. When I contacted them I was told I would have to buy a new one $[$] (1/3 of the price of the unit)The speedring is even more cheaply made and software metal than the ultra-cheap adapters you get from fotodiox. My recommendation, save $[$] and buy the fotodiox 36" or 48" octabox. Light quality is just as good and surprisingly better made. Very disappointed in this product.

Comments about Elinchrom 39" Rotalux Deep OctaBox:

The quality of light is really nice with and without outer diffusion. I got this to replace my Paul Buff 35" octa. The Paul Buff modifiers are thick and rugged compared to this box. I take the PB octa with me on location all the time not sure if the Deep Octa is up to the task due to the thin natural of the material used. This is used with the Paul Buff Einstein E640. I got the AlienBees speed ring but the Einstein only locks half way but its enough to hold just fine. The ring does fit AlienBees strobe perfectly. I have to say the first time setup was very difficult to get everything lined up right.

Being new to rotalux light modifiers it took me a few days to understand the set up and break down process. But once I got, it was breeze!

I use this with an Einstein 640 strobe and adapter ring.

          Solid build and beautiful light.

Comments about Elinchrom 39" Rotalux Deep OctaBox:

The interior of this box ripped after two weeks of use. After owning it for over a year, the interior is covered with white duck tape just to make it adequate for use. Ridiculously expensive for such terrible build quality. Furthermore, the O-ring that has to be purchased to use this failed to retract after a couple weeks as well. As a result, this wide, deep Octa is not able to collapse and is terribly difficult to bring to/from places let alone through doorways. I feel embarrassed when I have to squeeze it through my clients door frames because it's not able to be collapsed. I hate the fact that I overpaid for this item, which is not better than Paul Buff or similar. Every Elinchrom product I have purchased has been of terrible build quality and has malfunctioned in some way. DO NOT PAY THEM YOUR MONEY!

There are tons of articles on the web that will tell you what a great light shaping tool this is, and it doesn't disappoint. Solid construction, portable, and easy to put together. Some people suggest it's hard to put the rods in for the first time, but it's actually pretty easy. Highly recommended.

I was ready to send it back after encountering difficult assembly, but some internet sleuthing helped out a lot. The included instructions are not very good. The keys are to hold the spring lock with your thumb and finger and simultaneously push on the rod with that hand's palm while the other hand pushes the opposite end of the ring. It will easily snap into place during assembly, and unlock during disassembly. The other key is to work on opposing rods, this keeps the tension on the whole thing even. This is critical for first time assembly where the ring wants to shift out of alignment. Contrary to the included instructions, completely spring lock 2 opposite rods at a time, then do 2 more opposite at 90 degrees, etc until all 8 are in. It is critical that the locks align with the ribs and this helps maintain that alignment.Fortunately you only have to insert the rods once. Now it takes maybe 20 seconds or less to assemble, disassemble - faster than my softliter. The downside to not having to completely assemble each time is that the minimum packing size is the diameter of the speed ring. It would be nice if it flat packed.

It's difficult to explain but this box gives you a different look unlike any other softbox that I have used. Works with the elinchrome ranger quatra with an adapter but I also just ordered a speed ring for my profoto heads. Very rich and marinated type of look with a fast light fall off. Only thing is, a little difficult to put together and take apart which is the only reason why I give it 4 stars

I love the lighting I get with the deep softbox, also the amount of control I have over the light is great. I can take off the cover if I need the light to be stronger but still diffused, and I can remove the inner panel to basically have a deep umbrella with harsh dramatic light. They are large enough to light an entire person, but not so big as to be cumbersome. The only down side I see here is the speed ring system. Elinchrom's gotta find something better. It's like trying to pitch a tent in a pitch black cave. I never take them apart because putting them together takes about 20 min a piece and I don't have time for that, but therefore they take up a lot of space in the car if you need to use them on location. If they were easier to collapse down and reassemble they would be perfect, but not being able to do so makes these soft boxes a pain, and deserve a 3 star rating in my book.

The materials are well made, the deep octa has fallen like 2 times and nothing has happened.

Comments about Elinchrom 39" Rotalux Deep OctaBox:

Wow. This thing is lightweight, which is both good and not so good. I use mostly Profoto softboxes, and am used to their heavier construction. (Profoto's fabrics and rib designs are just solid.) So when this octa arrived I was honestly shocked by the thin crinkly fabric. Don't get me wrong, the material is beautifully woven, but in the same way that silk chiffon is a beautiful weave.. and terribly fragile. I very much like the silver pebbled interior though, and my quick tests show that it is at least as efficient as my other premium softboxes, if not more. (Could be the true parabolic shape too.)

The diffusers are tightly made and slippery smooth. The only thing about the outer panel that I don't like was as I put it on, it "pillowed" and stretched a bit where my fingers pulled the edges, and hasn't returned to its original shape. So I made a mental note to take more care next time.

I think the thinnish ribs do the job, and help keep the octa lightweight. Again, as with many aspects of this softbox, I'd prefer a more stout choice of materials all-around (i.e. heavier gauge spring steel) for a stronger construction. Still, after wrestling with it to set it up (see other reviews) it was as tight as a drum, and light as a feather. So that's nice.

I won't go into setting it up, except to say: Stick to the directions and use an elbow to push on the middle of the rib as your hand snaps the swivel into the speed ring. And be patient. Obviously, I can't use the speed ring that came with the softbox, so ordered Elinchrom's Rotalux Speed Ring for Profoto. It sounds like the supplied Eli speed ring is getting bent by Eli users, but I can say that the Profoto version is very stout. (I'll link to it at the end of this review.) Unfortunately, this also means I can't use the little white reflector dish, as that only works with Elinchrom heads. I plan to investigate other options to mount it though, because as someone else here smartly said: this thing has the potential to direct light like a (foldable) Mola Setti.

The storage bag is sturdy! Great considering the fairly fragile contents. And I was happy to see that I can -just barely- get the whole folded shebang inside the bag, despite the added length of the Profoto speed ring.

In my quick tests, The Light lives up to the hype, and I hope to use this octa for years to come. However, if it tears or a seam fails, I don't think I'll be surprised. Cheers ~

The light that comes out of this box is fantastic. But, it's not worth the money. The rods that come with it to assemble the soft box bent after putting it together twice, the speed ring also bent after using it two times. The soft box is now almost permanently mounted onto my Ranger head because of the way it bent. It takes two people to get the soft box off of the light.

Comments about Elinchrom 39" Rotalux Deep OctaBox:

I use this with the big Elinchrom Ranger battery pack and head. I wanted something that I could use as a medium softbox or a very large reflector, and this fits the bill.

It's well made and well designed. Kind of tricky to put together the first time, but following the directions works. The first time I opened it all the way, it was very stiff and difficult, but it got easier every time after that. One hint: I put it on the rolling case for the flash, which lets me bend the strut slightly *past* the horizontal so the locking pin slides in the slot more easily (rather than on the floor where it's more difficult to do.) I like the little case that holds everything for transport - it fits in my sling bag with a large light stand.

One downside is that the white cover and the inside baffle must both be removed to set up and tear down this box. Luckily the cover comes off and reattaches easily, the baffle takes a little longer.

When used as a large silver reflector, I use the white flash tube cover to avoid having the light from the tube hit the subject directly. (Tried it once, not so good.) The flash tube cover is hard to insert and even more difficult to remove from the umbrella tube in the middle of the flash head.

When used as a medium soft box, this modifier gives a nice, creamy soft light while maintaining a strong feeling of directionality.

                                  Very happy with it overall.
