        functional low-cost option

Comments about NSI / Leviton D4-DMX 4 Channel Programmable Dimmer Pack - 5-Pin DMX (120V):

This product was recommended to me by a theatrical technical director who insisted that they were the best made product for the lowest price.Indeed, they are low price and the shell is seemingly well made. However the moveable parts appear to be a bit flimsy. I haven't used them extensively enough to see if they will actually fail.

Comments about NSI / Leviton D4-DMX 4 Channel Programmable Dimmer Pack - 5-Pin DMX (120V):

Very cheap and useful SCR dimmers. We keep 3 or 4 packs on hand for low-power AC loads on stage.
Not terribly bullet-proof. We lose one a year on average to screen failure (most common) or total failure. At least with screen failure we can still use them for a while. Repair costs are 85% of a new unit, so we usually just toss them when they die. Also, pay attention to the "tungsten loads only". They really don't like inductive loads.

Comments about NSI / Leviton D4-DMX 4 Channel Programmable Dimmer Pack - 5-Pin DMX (120V):

I manage electrics at a small theatre where we use seven of these dimmer packs to augment our 36 permenantly installed dimmers. My oldest D4-DMX is over eight years old, and it's held up well under daily use and some abuse. All of my D4-DMX dimmers have held up very well, in fact. The only problem I've run into with them is that the LED display seems to be pretty fragile, and I have a couple of units with broken displays. The dimmers themselves function perfectly, and I keep the addresses the same, so the broken displays are a pretty minor inconvenience. I'd say the best thing about these dimmers is the quality you get at this low price point. There are other dimmer packs at about the same price, or even a few bucks cheaper, but they are complete junk and won't hold up to long-term, continuous use like the D4-DMX. One added tip on this dimmer: I've noticed that B&H usually has the lowest price on these, and they certainly have the customer service aparatus to back up the sale. One thing though: B&H usualy charges [$]more for the 3-pin DMX version than it does for the 5-pin. At that price differential it is certainly worthwhile to build a 3 pin-5 pin adaptor, or to just swap out the 5-pin jacks with 3-pin ones, if you must have 3-pin.

Comments about NSI / Leviton D4-DMX 4 Channel Programmable Dimmer Pack - 5-Pin DMX (120V):

This device comes with a standard NEMA 5-15 plug (the one you are most familiar with). It's called a 5-15 plug because it's 3 conductors and rated for 15 Amps. However, this dimmer pack will pull up to 20 amps (2400W). A NEMA 5-20 (which it should be) is no different, except that the neutral prong is turned 90 degrees (like on some window A/C units). It's not any safer electrically, it's just what electrical code specifies. Also the cord on the device is 14 gauge which is also a bit on the light side if you are going to pull 20A through it. I suspect the cord will get hot when the dimmer pack is run at 100%. Everything works as expected, however, I've just started playing with it. We'll see how it goes-
