Would recommend scanner; would not recommend bundled software.

I'm using this to scan old paperwork so I can get rid of it. I wanted up to 600 dpi. I also wanted something that would scan up to legal size paper. This scanner scans both sides at the same time or just one side if desired, which is nice. I wanted something inexpensive because once the old stuff is scanned I won't be using the scanner much. Thus I wasn't looking at flatbeds (most can't do legal size), high-resolution, fast, or hopper-fed scanners. After several hundred scans I can say this machine fulfills my criteria and works fine. I just wish the included barely-adequate software were better.

My choice at the time came down to this Brother and the NeatReceipts mobile, which at the time was on special for not much more. From reviews I guessed the machines themselves were probably quite similar so the choice came down to the software. Included software seemed different. NeatReceipts seemed targeted toward people who wanted to track expenses and build spreadsheets automatically from scanned receipts. The Brother at the time included more general-purpose software. I chose the Brother because I wasn't planning on generating reports from my documents, just archiving them.

Included when I bought was 1) very basic scanner software DSMobileScan; 2) PageManager 7 SE, scanning software with more features and tolerable OCR included; 3) a business card reader/contact manager which I haven't tried yet, and is no longer included in the package for sale.

The Brother scanner itself works fine. It feels sturdy and solid, not fragile and cheap. It plugs into a USB port and needs no other power supply. It is not fast and it is not easy to insert pages without skewing them, but this seems to be common to all portable scanners. The scanner must also be quite level when in use; it is not able to pull sheets of paper uphill very well. It was easy to set up and color balance.

The auto-seating feature works too fast, and then quits right away, so if you don't line up the document exactly right from the first instant (almost impossible with no paper guides) it will be grabbed at an angle. This isn't too big a problem; you can just pull out the page and reinsert, but it doesn't auto-grab if you do this and you might have to apply a little forward pressure when you start to scan to ensure it gets grabbed.

The scanner chokes on paper with folds, especially thicker paper. I had to grab the leading edge once partially through the scanner and apply gentle traction to get folded paper through without sticking. But in general the scans look good and it works as expected.

The driver installed under Windows 7 easily. I haven't tried it on other operating systems. The included Brother DSMobileScan software is intended for scanning one document at a time. It will not automatically recognize your paper size; you have to tell it. You set the settings, insert the document, and click on either the software button or the physical button on the scanner. The DSMobile Scan software generates PDF or image files (jpg, tiff, png) at several DPIs and at many preset sizes, or custom sizes. It permits scanning multi-page, two-sided documents. With the multi-page setting, after you scan the first page, a dialog box pops up asking whether you want to feed another page. Each document can have only one paper size, so if you feed it a multi-page bill with the stub torn off one page, that page will have a big black section on the scan. I didn't use this software much.

PageManager 7 SE is more complex. I used it for almost all scans so far. When opened it shows a menu section at the top, a split directory tree on the left, and thumbnails of scans in reverse chronologic order on the right. A button bar with modifiable presets for several types of scans (document, PDF, OCR of text, magazine articles, photos) is available; it pops up in the upper right corner of the main window.

The basic idea is to set the scanner options, scan the document, wait for the OCR to be done, open it if you want to look at it, rename the document in the thumbnail directory, and copy it to its final destination.

Custom settings can be assigned to the software buttons: Document size, DPI, output file type, color/gray/B&W, duplex or not, multipage or not, more. Any preset scan software button can be assigned to the physical button on the scanner; this comes in handy if you are scanning multiple documents of the same size and type. The button bar can be launched by itself, or from within the main program. Anything the button bar does can be done from within the main program if you don't want another object on your screen or in your Windows tray. Whenever you choose PDF for output, OCR is performed automatically. You must set the document size of everything you want to scan; PageManager 7 SE cannot recognize it. If you scan a document smaller than what is set there will be a lot of black space around the document. The "scan to XLS" setting is greyed out on my software; maybe it doesn't come with the SE version.

I found myself using it by sorting my documents into stacks of the same thing, opening the button settings dialog box and assigning the proper settings to one of the button bar buttons, assigning that button the default when the physical button on the scanner is pressed, scanning my documents, waiting for OCR; opening the new scan to inspect it; renaming it; and finally moving it to the correct folder. For OCR of bills, 150 DPI works fine on color scans but 300 DPI is needed for B&W or greyscale.

A nice feature is the "pallet." This is an area of the main window. If you drop a number of files there they can be packaged as a group and sent via E-mail or copied somewhere together.

PageManager 7 SE produces acceptable scans and it is not too difficult to modify settings. It has a number of problems I found extremely annoying; so annoying I wish I had bought the NeatReceipts portable instead.

First, people who like to use keyboards rather than mice for program manipulation will be quite frustrated. Arrow keys don't work the way they are supposed to in the menu. With a menu item open, using left or right arrow keys should take one to the next top-level menu in that direction. Not here; if you have a submenu open, and hit the left or right arrow, nothing happens.

Dialog boxes are also frustrating for keyboarders. Programmers normally take care that tabbing through a dialog box flows through the options from top to bottom, left to right, in a logical order. Not here; tabbing through the settings dialog box jumps all over the place in a seemingly random order, so you have to hit the tab and see what is highlighted, then hit the tab again, and finally arrive at whatever option you wanted to hit. And the OK button is supposed to stay highlighted so after you make your selections you can just hit Enter to accept your choices and close the dialog box. It doesn't do this. You have to tab around randomly for a while and hope you notice when the focus changes to the OK button.

This makes what should be 1-2 seconds into 15-30 seconds each time. This is just lazy, sloppy programming, since it is easy to change tab order while developing software in any programming environment. They just assumed everybody uses a mouse exclusively. I wonder what else they didn't check before pushing the program out the door.

Second, and tied for most irritating, if you set a custom page size, then change any of the other options in the settings dialog box, your custom page size reverts to the standard 3" x 5" custom size - and because your custom page size setting isn't visible until you're in that part of the dialog box, you won't notice it until you scan at the wrong size. You have to remember to set the custom page size very last of all the settings.

Third, the program can't assemble multiple pages into one PDF unless they're scanned all at once into a single file. It says it can, with a setting for "stacking" files, but this just means you get multiple files having the same basic file name with sequential numbers appended. Instead, if you want one document with differing page sizes, you have to set the scanner to the size of the largest page, scan them all at once, and accept big black areas around the smaller pages.

Fourth, the help is minimal and only covers the most obvious settings. If you want any detail about how something works or how to do something you are out of luck. You have to fall back on trial and error.

Fifth, you cannot abort scans. The Cancel buttons don't do anything. You also can't interrupt a scan to reinsert a page that didn't feed right. So if you misfeed one page in a multi-document scan, you have to start from scratch. You have to look at every page of everything you scan to be sure you didn't goof up, too.

Sixth, the dialog box asking you to insert the next page on a multi-page scan pops up BEHIND the rest of your windows after the first page of a multi-page scan, and you won't see it. You won't find it unless you cycle through your open windows with Alt-Tab. It took me a long time to figure out why I couldn't do a multi-page scan. Even knowing the dialog box is programmed wrong, I forgot it all the time and wondered why I couldn't feed my next page. This is also a simple programming mistake to correct and they should have done so.

If you already have good scanner software and this scanner would otherwise fit your needs, go ahead. The machine itself is fine. The NeatReceipts mobile is now a lot more expensive than this one, and I haven't tried their software. But I wish I had bought the NeatReceipts instead of this scanner, due to the lame PageManager software. It's not bad enough to return the Brother scanner, but software quirks will be a constant source of irritation. And if you're contemplating buying PageManager by itself, I would say - Don't.

It may be small, but it is mighty! So nice to finally have a scanner in our home, and the fact that it truly is so small & portable really makes this a 5 start rating for me. The only issue we might have had setting up on our iMac was due to our own impatience. Seriously, couldn't be happier with this scanner! Brother, you've done it again!

I got mine for [$] when there was a deal from BH. Why 4 Stars is because it has a black lining on any document scan on the side. To get rid of the black line on the side there you need to adjust it on every scan. Other than that is a great scanner. There is some adjustment that you need to do before getting a great scan. Click on the custom icon for any adjustment.

I bought this scanner so I could scan checks and add them to a donations database on my Mac.GOOD: The scanner can definitely scan documents at least as small as a personal check, and the scans came out clear enough for my purposes.NOT SO GOOD: Occasionally documents don't feed as smoothly as they should. I suspect this happens if they're slightly dog-eared.BAD: Even though the product brochure (PDF still available from Brother's web site, as of this writing - search Brother's web site for "DS600_Final Brochure") states that this scanner ships with PrestoPageManager 9 for the Mac, it does not. All it includes is a basic TWAIN driver. This means that each time you want to scan a document smaller than 8.5x11, you must manually adjust the scan size using the preview window - a real pain.I e-mailed Brother to ask about the PR/software inconsistency. They were apologetic, and they even went so far as to call me instead of just e-mailing, but they offered no remedy at all. I didn't have the heart to yell at the operator - she was trying to be nice - but I can't say that's good customer service.

It's time to stop devoting valuable space in life to paper. If you're tired of all the paper clutter in your life - this is the gadget that will help clean it up!
If you're not sure what to do with the papers, don't save them in a box, closet or drawer, just scan, save then shred!
Once I've gone through the paper, I'm moving on to old family photos.
I'm looking forward to a bit more space and a little more organization.

I think the scanner is great! So why only 4 stars?
The scanned images come out a bit crooked. Also the software - while it is easy to use, there isn't an organization method to it - or if there is I haven't figured out how it works.

Before buying this product, I read the reviews, and they were great. After buying and receiving this product, it didn't work. We called the company and they emailed us a "fix". We tried it, and it did not work. We called this morning, indicating that the product still didn't work, and they said that we could return it with $50!!! We said no; that was ludicrous, and we would be returning the scanner to B&H Photo. Don't buy this scanner!

Very good scanner for those who do not need a large volume scanner. No power cord other than USB really helps and the product is about the size of a package of spaghetti. Could not be more pleased.

Works fine for a portable. Good software package included. Takes a little bit of care to feed the documents to print straight. I'd buy it again.

This is perfect for simple, easy scanning. I keep it in the drawer with the computer battery and it is fabulous. Still not sure about the picture scanning, small pics end up with a black back ground but I didn't finish the directions and I may be missing something...I need to check it out better. Also, the carrying case should have enough room for the cord. I love it!
