Olympus UFL-1 Underwater Strobe Head - Rated up to 131'

B&H # OLUFL1 Mfr # 202116
No Longer Available

The Olympus UFL-1 Strobe is designed for use with Olympus digital cameras and underwater housings. This is a slave flash that does not require cables. Waterproof to 131' (40 m), this underwater flash allows TTL exposure control in slave mode. This makes multiple flash applications and single flash macro photography easy. Using the UFL-1 Flash with your Olympus camera and housing will greatly improve your image quality.

It is best to use the optional fiber optic cord for a flood free connection. The fiber optic cable transmits light from the camera's built in flash to the slave sensor on the strobe.

As you go deeper underwater the blue color of the water filters out all the beautiful reds, oranges, and other colors. Using an external flash close to your subject brings back the true vibrant colors of the underwater world. The camera's internal flash is too close to the lens and will cause a snow like effect called back-scatter. So the UFL-1 is the perfect way to light up the underwater world.

Comments about Olympus UFL-1 Underwater Strobe:

This flash is a good starter underwater flash. The new world of digital underwater photography is quite different from the old fashion film. I just recently changed from using an OM-4ti in special housing, to a small digital compact the T610 from olympus. The old school quality is hard to match. On my old system I used a high mounted land flash also in housing with guide 50.

The first impression of the UFL1 is good build and easy controls. One knob allows TTL and manual selection. The other knob allows full flash and 1/2 flash, although I don't see any use for the 1/2 setting for underwater with such a low guide!
For my style of underwater photography the cycle time is no problem at all, and flash is always ready when I need it.
The UFL1 can be triggered via an external optical cable or via the slave mode, which works via the same optical eye in the flash as the cable. This last option can only be used with a camera where the in-camera preflash can be disabled. For the Olympus T610 this is not possible and all my first dive pictures where under exposed due to too early triggering of the flash. So for reliable results do use the optic cable.
Battery life is good enough for me. I take on average 75 shots each dive, and the batteries can easily accommodate that. With a swap in between dives there is no issue.
This flash is great to figure out how you want to set up your system. It is also sufficiently better than the in house flash of the compact. The main benefit from using an additional arm is that back scatter is reduced quite a bit.
I am a bit perplexed why Olympus placed such a weak light in the housing, just a few guide points more would not change the design, and would not increase cost too much.
Best use is for close up in range of less than 1 1/2 meters, preferably in shallow water with sufficient ambient light. I think this flash is great in bringing out colors like an infill flash, but is not strong enough to light a whole scene.

I am very pleased with the quality of the light this strobe provides. It works really well with my G10. It's basic but does a beautiful job on close subjects.

I used this flash for underwater photography. This time all of my dives were about 40 to 65 feet deep. Shalow coral and a lot of small fish.
