I was surprised by how solid this tripod was when I first set it up. I was also impressed by the smoothness of the leg extensions and how tightly they lock. This tripod can clearly support a long telephoto lens with confidence.

Some might complain a little about the weight if they plan to carry the device around all day. It did not bother me, but then again I am used to hauling around a lot of equipment. I kind of like the extra weight. It immediately sold me on durability for one thing, since it gives the unit a genuine solid feel. It is also certain to help on windy days.

I use this product for both amateur photography and professional construction. The latter application is to mount a laser construction leveling and alignment device.

The carrying bag is of simple, nylon construction with carrying straps and a light-duty zipper. It is not very durable in the sense that it will only protect the tripod from minor abrasions, moisture and dust. Don't expect this case to protect it from heavy shock or water damage - in other words, don't just toss it in the back of your truck with heavy ladders, etc. Not that you would ever do that with your precision camera equipment anyway - RIGHT?!!! Seriously, the case is not heavily padded or water-proof, but it's decent protection for routine storage and transport.

This tripod offers tremendous height flexibility and can be reliably used from a ladder. The head's integrated bubble levels are easy to view, but are obviously somewhat more sensitive at greater extension heights. At max height, I would still have total confidence in the unit's ability to support an SLR with a longer telephoto lens.

The padded legs offer great protection to furniture and other items that may come into contact with the device during use, storage and transportation. They also ensure a positive grip when repositioning or making adjustments.

The craftmanship is simply exceptional. Everything has a nice tight fit, which greatly boosts your confidence when mounting expensive optics to the tripod head. The finish looks exceptional, too. I was quite surprised by the quality considering the price. You really get a lot for your investment here.

While I have only used this tripod a short time, I expect it will serve me well for many years. For the amateur or semi-pro this is a great tool. I highly recommend it for traveling use.

I use the Slik tripod in both a home studio and in the field. In the studio, the tripod is great. It is sturdy and easy to manipulate the head. The height is widely variable and covers most needs.

In the field, the tripod is a bit heavy and clunky. The carry bag does not sit well on your shoulder and must be carried more like a suitcase than a shoulder bag. The set up of the head is time-consuming as you have to screw in the handle each time you set up the tripod in a new location. It is not a fast use tripod as a result.

Comments about Slik Pro 580DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:

Just getting into photography, I knew I needed a tripod for some of the shots I would like to achieve. The price seemed great and the reviews I had read were pretty good. It's rather well built for the money, seems very stable and versatile.

To me it seems pretty lightweight, It could get a little cumbersome if you were to carry it around all day with you. But don't let that shy you away from considering this great product. As I said, I was rather surprised by it's build quality and it's professional feel. I think it looks great too.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a great tripod on a budget, or are getting into photography.

Comments about Slik Pro 580DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:

After using a 780dx in my studio for several years I decided to replace an ageing tripod for outdoor shots. This thing is rigid and will hold a 70-200 telephoto easily with no shake even in a breeze. It's not super light(no carbon legs), but way lighter than my 780 and is just the right size to carry around outside. For the money it really does it's job well.

Comments about Slik Pro 580DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:

I bought this a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty firm and steady, but it's quite heavy, so it's probably not the best option if you're planing carrying it on your vacation. Walking Paris, New York or some other big city with this tripod plus your camera bag wouldn't be so confortable
On the contrary, if you're using it in a studio, house or wherever you don't have to carry it around, it's a great option. No monopod, though...

Coming from a bottom of the line Canon Tripod, This was excellent. Extremely stable, easy to fold up. A little heavy but ont plan on hauling it anywhere far (up mountains, etc). Used this at the beach for a week and was able to get some great HDR without having to use a remote trigger (it was very stable). Plan on using this in the studio for headshots as well.

My only con is having to unscrew the 2 stabilizer arms before packing it away.

I'm mostly shooting reunions, birthdays, vacation travels to places I'll never return to, photos capturing life. I needed a sturdy, but yet light wt pod that would attach to the base of my outfit bag. The specs says it folds to 27" or so, but by reversing the center pole, I achieve exactly a 24" fold, and attaches to the bottom of my camera outfit bag, or can fit into my smallest
travel baggage. Setup takes a little longer because of this. Pod is being used with 7D, 17-55mm, and 70-200mm lens, 580ex flash. Tripod, to date, has been fantastic. Brilliant, for my needs. Camera Enthusiast, loving capturing the world.

This is a quality tripod that is solidly built. It does exactly what a tripod should do. I shoot with a 40D with the battery grip and it handles it great. I have used it for night photography as well as large group photos. The levels are a nice feature to keep your lines straight. I don't like to use tripods a lot but when you need one it's nice to have one that you can depend on. It's kind of heavy, but I don't consider that a con. I did a lot of research before I decided on the Slik PRO 580DX and I'm confident I made the right choice. [...] Get it, you won't be sorry!
