The Cullmann Magnesit 35 Nm Ballhead with Quick Release is an ergonomically formed ballhead proven to withstand 35 Nm (Newton meters) of torque. This measuring system - for the first time - provides a dependable value relating to the loadbearing capacity of the tripod head, measured from the end of the lens.

This head offers a maximum range of control. The ballhead features three independent locking knobs to separately control general positioning, panning, and friction control, and is housed in a precision-machined stylish black anodized aluminum body.

Buy it before it jumps to $300 or more. I just purchased Gitzo GT-3541 legs and before spending big bucks on a renowned ballhead I decided to give this one a try given the excellent reviews and the laughable price. Let me tell you that I'm impressed with the build quality and smoothness of operation.Be prepared that this ballhead is BIG. Comments about Cullmann Magnesit 35 Nm Ballhead, with Independent Panning Lock and Quick Release - Supports 66 lbs (30 kg):

Got two of these heads and two small Benro tripods. These 4 items' paints come off in less than a year or two and make my hands have this unpleasant smell and were blacken whenever I use them.

I hope the manufacture or maybe BH will let them know so they can use paints like Manfrotto and Gitzo used on their tripods/heads.

Great products for the money if only if they have used quality paints on them.

Comments about Cullmann Magnesit 35 Nm Ballhead, with Independent Panning Lock and Quick Release - Supports 66 lbs (30 kg):

I do lots of large format shooting and wanted something that was light weight and would not take up space for travel as ball heads have no handles sticking out. I also needed a large enough platform to handle the base of my Sinar 4x5. The claim that this head could hold so much weight and was so light seemed improbable but when I got it I was pleasantly surprised. Once the load is set with the friction knob it is smooth as silk. It is amazing that something so light can be so strong and a rare occurrence to have a quality photography product that is such a bargain. I pair this smooth as silk wonder with a carbon fiber Gitzo.

Well, I've been shopping for a ball head/tripod combination and first I had my mind set on a Gitzo/Arca Swiss combo. If you wonder about the tripod, I went with Induro.I was just about ready to order my Arca Swiss when I came across this ball head on the B&H website. After reading the many favorable reviews and doing further research I decided to order this instead. All I can say is I'm glad I did. I can't believe this thing cost under [$] It is worth every penny and then some! Looks fantastic on a large tripod and the operation is as smooth as any I've ever tried, including a friends Arca. The finish is also quite beautiful. I would recommend this ball head to anyone. You can't go wrong with it.Buyer remorse - NONE.

I decided to buy this ballhead based on the reviews I read here. The reviews were right on. I first used the ballhead on a trip up to the North Shore of Lake Superior. The head performed just as I hoped it would. It works great with my 40D and 300mm F4 lens. It's smooth, very smooth. I give the tension knob a little twist and the camera lens combination floats on top of the tripod beautifully. When I see a bird or deer come into camera range I just simply pan over and click, take the picture. It's all so effortless and smooth. When I first got this ballhead, the tension knob was extremely tight and I could not loosen it with my bare hands. I had to use a channel-lock pliers with a soft hand towel to protect the knob from scratches, to loosen it... kind of scary, but it worked. This is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Other than that the ballhead is performing great. Can't wait to use it this fall in the deer woods.

Comments about Cullmann Magnesit 35 Nm Ballhead, with Independent Panning Lock and Quick Release - Supports 66 lbs (30 kg):

I had wanted to get a ballhead a few years ago but all the information online indicated that unless you spent hundreds of dollars you would end up with an inferior product. After receiving this item, it would seem to me, that this is not the case. Granted I have never had my hands on any of the more expensive brands to compare, but no need, this item works wonderfully. The large rubberized knobs work great, the action of the ball is smooth. The separate panning and friction knobs are very nice. My only issues are with the spirit levels which don't seem to work well at all. The bubbles in both always seem to settle in one end or the other and never in the middle to indicate "level" no matter how it is positioned. This is not a big deal personally. In all fairness, prior to purchasing this item I did read as many reviews as I could locate and at least one mentioned the issue with the "bubble levels". The only other issue was with the lever to lock the quick release plate in place. It needed to be repositioned (rotated) so that it would not be in the way with the camera mounted. This was a simple adjustment using an allen wrench. This was also noted in a review I had read. Otherwise this is a great item. The unit as a whole is a bit large (it is the same weight or a fraction lighter, and more compact than the pan/tilt head it replaces). I suppose I would have given greater consideration to the slightly smaller Cullmann 30NM or 25NM if either included a quick release platform in the price. Overall this is a great ballhead.

this is the best head for the price.

...is all I can say. This ball head is built like a tank. I bought it to hold my Bigmos (Sigma 150-500mm OS) and gripped bodies, and found that it could easily hold a pair of Stellarvue 20x85mm binoculars, and a Sigma 180mm macro with a macro rail with no problems. It's big, but it's light, and it holds a ton of weight. The motions are smooth, and the knobs all work perfectly. The rubber grips are good quality, and don't seem like they'd be prone to slipping. This is definitely the perfect alternative to the higher-priced ball heads that won't hold the same amount of weight.

Holds my nikon 70-200mm 2.8 vr rock solid mounted on the camera or by the lens mount. The only movement comes from the lens mount not the head which is another story.
The friction is very smooth as you move it around except at the top where is decreases giving a slip feeling and why I give it a 4 not a 5. The knobs are large and rubber coated easy to use and smooth. The quick release is solid, quick and safe(camera won't slip off until you press a button). Levels are useless to me. Pans smoothly. A bit heavy but if you work your equipment you will appreciate it's build. Overall it has performed excellently.

If you have heavy, long lenses like the 50-500mm Bigma (Sigma), then you cannot get a stronger, more reliable tripod head mount than this Cullman. It's a bit heavy & cumbersome on my lightweight Gitzo tripod, but needed for the extreme telephoto lenses.

I bought this head to replace a pathetic little trigger grip ball head that couldn't cope with my cameras. This new head handles my 1D or Mamiya RZ system with ease.

I looked at a lot of very expensive tripod heads before someone suggested this one to me. I'm 100% satisfied with this unit and would feel very dumb now if I'd paid 2-3x the price for something else.

Comments about Cullmann Magnesit 35 Nm Ballhead, with Independent Panning Lock and Quick Release - Supports 66 lbs (30 kg):

This ball head is gnarly (as in huge, but way awesome). My only gripe is that the giant lock knob is on the right side of the head, which forces you to compose with your left hand while locking the head with your right hand. Yes, you can turn the head around to move the lock knob to the left side, but then the other knobs will be facing away from you and the notch for vertical composition will be on the wrong side. I wish they had switched the friction knob with the lock knob. This is nitpicking, especially since this isn't the only ball head with this problem.

Use it for landscape photography. Love the fact that it is a heavy duty ballhead and it helps with taking a shaper image. Very easy to use the quick release bracket.

I have been using this ballhead during several days of shooting. Initially, I was impressed by the size of this ballhead - it is much larger than most and has tremendous weight carrying capacity.

After using it for a while, I am even more impressed with its smooth operation. All the knobs are easy to grip and move very smoothly. Once the friction knob is adjusted properly, the ball action is quite smooth and the pan action is flawless.

Other reviewers have stated that the finish is not on a par with some of the more expensive ballheads, but I find it to be totally acceptable.

The best feature of this item is the price! This is one of the best bargains to be had. It works as well as many of the more expensive ballheads, and I actually prefer this one because of its size.

The body is like a can of beer (coke if you are underage)Cullmann manufactures it in China with supervision of the "German LGA TÜV Rheinland Group"

I just recieved this tripod head in the mail and wanted to start a review thread for it. Mostly due to the size of the head, I have yet to put it on my new carbon fiber tripod legs as they are still enroute but I know that this is more than I will ever need so as long as it lasts I doubt I will be buying anything else in the near future to replace it. I have shot a couple of photos with a Mountain Dew can in the photo to give you a reference, the photo on the BH website is very misleading as to the size.

                                    Pros:
Big enough to hold anything I can mount.
                                    Smooth friction control.
All knobs have knurled rubber so if you had gloves on it would still be easy to use.
Not too heavy for the size and load capacity.
                                    Price

                                    Cons:
                                    Huge!
I have yet to come up with any more cons but will add them once I put the tripod head into action.

You really have no idea what your getting when purchasing this ball mount. I lamented over Manfrotto and Cullmann and decided based on the reviews I had read on this site to give it a try sight unseen.
What a surprize when it arrived. Huge and sturdy. Multiple settings with tilt and pan. A very solid camera mount with all the bells and whistles and for 139. No one can beat it at that price.
Funny that this ball mount is not available at any of the shops here in BC Canada. Thank you B&H.

                                      I'm using this item along with a Manfrotto 055 MF4 and a 5-8 pound camera/lens combo.

                                      How you use the product…
                                      -Landscape and long exposure photography.

Things that are great about it…
-The first thing the jumps out at you is the awesome strength the head advertises. Considering the beefy nature of the unit I'm willing to bet it can hold up to the huge claims it makes, but I'll never need quite that much power. However, it’s nice to be able to move the tripod around and the camera and lens stays put. A few other stand out features are the rubberized grips on the knobs, great looks and smooth grease-free operation.

Things that aren't so great about it…
-Some of the parts are a little rough (regarding the finish), but again the unit is still aesthetically pleasing. Also I had a problem freeing two of the three knobs initially (Once moved, they were as free and smooth as the rest of the unit).

I'll admit upfront that 98% of my photography is not done on a tripod, but when one is needed, it is needed! I'm replacing an old, tired Manfrotto (Bogen) 352RC ball head with this unit and it certainly is very sturdy. Knob adjustments are gradual and the ball moves pretty smoothly if there is still some tension applied with a Canon 1D series camera and moderately large lens mounted, though it's not buttery smooth like a video head.

                                            Some nitpicks I have:

                                            - German name but made in China. I guess for the price one shouldn't be surprised. Just want to let those who might be expecting a finely crafted item hot off a CNC machine... it's good, but it's not RRS grade.

                                            - Bubble levels may not be true. They weren't giving me the same reading my pocket level was. The fluid in the levels is quite viscous and it takes the bubbles a long time to move. I found the bubbles tend to get stuck at either end too easily and you have to tilt the head excessively to dislodge them. A bit too tedious for my liking.

                                            - Some drift/shift in composition when tightening/locking the head. This is most pronounced if the friction/tension knob is very loose. The more the friction/tension knob is tightened, the less the head will shift when the lock knob is tightened. Depending on the camera & lens used, it may not be necessary to lock the head to hold the composition, thus avoiding the problem.

But these are actually quite minor points and not deal breakers IMO. If you're looking for a great value in a solid head with a decently large QR plate, this head will deliver. If you're looking for RRS/Kirk/Arca Swiss machining, this isn't it.

When researching this head I noticed that the weight is not listed anywhere, including the Cullmann site. The package's specs state 990g, my scale reads 1010g all inclusive, or about 2.2 pounds.
