I run a recording studio in Albany, New York, "old school" compared to my contemporaries. I still burn CDs in real time, sometimes incrementing track numbers manually, and I gotta say this unit is the best one I've ever used: every "thoughtful" feature is included. It will take signals from any digital or analog source, the monitoring is excellent, and if you attach a keyboard you can name tracks. When I say "thoughtful," I mean just that-- the designers apparently have confronted all the tangled little details you run up against when burning CDs and come up with solutions. The menus and options are deep and all-inclusive. I am totally digging it-- um, translated? It rocks.

First let me say B & H is a great company to do business with. On the Tascam CD-RW901SL... this machines A/D converters ad a brittle high end digital coloration that is unacceptable. This is the first so called pro machine I've seen do this. I have been in the business for 40 years and owned several pieces of Tascam equipment and never experienced a recorder that colored the sound. If you want a recorder that spits back at you what you put into it, do not buy this machine. Thank you B & H for refunding my money.

Comments about Tascam CD-RW901SL - Slot-Loading CD Recorder w/ MP3 Playback and XLR Connectors:

This recorder is in a high school performing arts center. We focus on training students. It is great to have a piece of gear that is completely intuitive (kids don't read manuals). The quality of the recordings is excellent.

Comments about Tascam CD-RW901SL - Slot-Loading CD Recorder w/ MP3 Playback and XLR Connectors:

Just for kicks, I took the digital out of this Tascam unit & put it into my older HHB CD burner...and made a CD. Then I took the same track, this time using the analog XLR out of the Tascam into the HHB.

These were simple voice over tracks to be used in a documentary.....so basically it was a baritone male voice without anything else. And I've been using the HHB unit for years, so I'm familiar with all ins & outs.....which is a neutral sounding unit w/ no real difference between the digital or the analog from what anyone would normally anticipate........Blank T.Yuden CD's were used in both cases. Plus, I had previously recorded the original voice overs. So, such criteria were my 'controls'.

After reviewing both CD's, I found that the Tascam analog XLR outs produced a far more realistic voice over........whereas the Tascam digital output lacked the warm midrange of the analog outs and added a somewhat brighter highend. I A/B'ed using several different pro monitors & also compared to the original v/o tracks.

Based on this, I'll continue to use the Tascam analog XLR's, which produce a nice full range effect. Within this analog aspect it sounds gggggggreat. However, I'd doubt if I'll ever use this unit as digital to digital.

Comments about Tascam CD-RW901SL - Slot-Loading CD Recorder w/ MP3 Playback and XLR Connectors:

We'd been looking for some time for a unit to replace our trusty HHB CD burners, and just couldn't seem to find anything, until we heard about Tascam's pro series, the 901-SL. It does everything the old HHB did plus a whole lot more. I read quite a few reviews of it and couldn't seem to find many negatives. Now I understand why. Love the fact that it's balanced in and out. Haven't needed the pitch control yet but it's kind of nice to know it's there. And it's control functions are laid out smartly and logically. The wired remote is also handy, but who does a WIRED remote any more? Ah, well. Overall, we're very pleased and impressed with this rack-mount unit.

Have been using this product in my home studio for 2 months now and overall am pleased with it's performance. Works well with different brands of CD-Rs. I don't believe it burns in true real time as it uses a DVD drive (these burn at 16x in short bursts from buffer memory). My only complaint is that the auto fade does not work smoothly (fades at the same rate no matter the time setting, then cuts out).

We use this for recording live concerts and recitals. We have tracked thousands of event and never missed a beat. I don't like the slot loading, but it works just fine and I have never had a problem with it. We use these units with externat converters so I can't speak to the AtoD. The cheaper version of this with out analogue XLR and AES-EBU is just as good. If you were to be tracking from a SPDIF source I would buy that one instead.

This is a replacement for Tascam CC-222 MK III, which is a tape/CD combination recorder. CC-222 usually last about 2-3 years.

I've bough 3 units of CD-RW901SL so far they're all good for long recording sessions (> 60min).

It rocks.
