The Bower SFDRL14C TTL Macro Ringlight Flash provides full TTL control (including E-TTL II) with both digital or film SLR cameras. This allows for accurate exposures of close-up subjects. When shooting at extremely short distances, relatively minor movement of lighting and subject results in relatively large changes of exposure. TTL metering eliminates the need for lengthy calculations of exposure, because the inherent loss of light at macro distances can automatically be accounted with ease.

I own a Canon 40D and a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens. I didn't want to pay 500$ for a ring flash, and I hesitated heavily before buying this Bower Ring Flash...

What a pleasant surprise! Everything works fine. I have never tried another ring flash so I cannot necessarily compare, but I've gotten some incredible insect shots with this flash. Obviously, the lighting is quite flat, but it enables me to shoot flies, bees and ants at fast shutter speeds HANDHELD. Superb.

And contrary to an earlier review, it works FINE with the 40D. No problems whatsoever. If you don't feel like dishing out 500$, I would highly recommend this flash.

The light does a decent job. The feelng is a bit cheap, but for the price, I didn't expect the top build quality. The main issue is the controls. On / Off sum up the extent of the controls. You have no control over the power of the unit, no control over first/second curtain. It does pretty good with TTL if you're using it for macro purposes, but even the, I have to dial in a bit of underexposure wit FEC to make it come out right. I thought I might use it for a combination of macro and portrait work, but for portrait work, it doesn't work very well.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

I am currently a field biologist and wildlife photographer doing research using a Canon D-60 and a macro-lens to photograph stomach content samples from turtles as part of my research. Specifically, I am photographing aquatic insects, worms, and other macroinvertebrates. I shot over 1000 images using it in 2012 with good results and no failures. Whether I am in the field or lab my setting is largely studio like and where this item belongs. When I transport it, I carry it in a hard plastic case lined with foam to protect it. Overall, the lighting is even and more than adequate when I am shooting adult dragonflies or butterflies as samples for presentations when they are on a background. Lastly, I leave it on land when I am wading or kayaking – so be realistic about its durability.

I bought this about a year ago after reading the reviews that mostly said it did its job! It worked fine for the couple of weeks I used it. I took it out today for the first time since then, added some fresh batteries and hey presto! It won't even turn on!

Almost exclusively for macro photography. Usually set on Aperature priority and flash adjusts time to 1/60 of a second. It produces a very well lit photograph. I have a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and the flash neatly fits on the 67 mm adjustment ring. If one wishes to do macrophotography using a ring flash, the Bawer ring flash does the job

I bought this ringflash to photograph flowers, insects and various other small object for advertizing. I was pleasantly surprised at the construction and build quality having read some adverse comments about this. It is sturdy enough for my purposes. The only very useful feature that it does not have the ability to ajust the flash output but this can be largely compensated for with camera settings. I found it works perfectly with all items I have tried it on including close-up portraits. If two semicircular separate flashes are required for shadow affects two pieces of dark tape stuck over the areas not required will produce good results.

I use this for dental photography with a Canon G11. I'm getting well exposed clear photos and would recommend it for that application. The camera needs to be set up correctly ie flash white balance, some negative flash exposure compensation etc. For the price it seems well made and it's meeting my needs.

Has a very cheap feel. Is built to a price point.
Misfires regularly, or doesn't fire at all.
Poor contacts result in batteries not sitting firmly in their housing.
On the odd occasion when it works, it works well.
In hindsight would have saved my money for the genuine product which costs five times as much.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

Does what it's supposed to. Provides lighting at close magnifications by reaching in areas that a regular flash can't.
Great for macro- a much less expensive alternative to the MT-14EX.

There isn't much control available over flash power and the unit is a bit cheaply built, but for this price you can't complain, hence my 5/5 rating otherwise!

This is a no-nonsense reliable flash for my particular application. I am an orthodontist and I use it for close-up intra-oral photography. I shoot all my pictures at f22 at 1/50 using a Canon D500 with a 60 mm macro lens. The results are superb and totally predictable.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

The first thing I noticed about this flash is its uncomfortably fragile-feeling shoe. However, it provides the right amount of light for someone not wanting to fork out a lot for occasional use! I'd recommend this if you're looking for an inexpensive option.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

The light does a decent job. The feelng is a bit cheap, but for the price, I didn't expect the top build quality. The main issue is the controls. On / Off sum up the extent of the controls. You have no control over the power of the unit, no control over first/second curtain. It does pretty good with TTL if you're using it for macro purposes, but even the, I have to dial in a bit of underexposure wit FEC to make it come out right. I thought I might use it for a combination of macro and portrait work, but for portrait work, it doesn't work very well.

I used the ring flash for insect pics.
The ETTL did not work well. The picture is always over flashed.

Also the ring flash burned out the batteries very fast. I used AA Energizer batteries. And the batteries are out of power in 1 hr... (20-30 shots ). This is terrible
