Okay, let's make this clear up front. If you're into floor-shaking, nail-popping explosions, this is probably not for you. On the other hand, if you're like me, who wanted something small and unobtrusive to fill in the lower end of small speakers, this deserves a spot very high on your list. I'm using it with a pair of 30 year old Realistic Minimus 7. (Don't laugh. Google them.) The result is VERY accurate and musical when asked to perform at ordinary-human SPLs. (Reminder: this isn't going to shake your floor) I'm constantly astonished at how good this simple and unexciting pairing of equipment sounds. A piano *sounds* like a piano. A guitar *sounds* like a guitar. A double-bass *sounds* like a double bass, with all the fullness of the lower register and appropriate raspiness of the bow on the strings. I couldn't be more pleased for this application.
Setup and operation are simple. Plug ("RCA" type) it into the sub output of your preamp or receiver (there's no built-in crossover), turn it on, and set a level to match your full-range speakers. I found a crossover of 100Hz (set in the receiver) the most satisfactory, but this will vary according to your equipment. I'd be very reluctant to ask this subwoofer to deal with anything over 150Hz, and I'd recommend against even 120Hz unless you are extremely limited by your full-range speakers.
The "100W" (I always take power ratings with a grain of salt) internal amp runs very cool. In fact, I've never felt the slightest warm spot anywhere on the unit. Idle power is only a couple of watts, so you don't have to fret about turning it off when it's not being used. Since there's no remote control except for the Yamaha-proprietary on-off switching (what do you want for this price point?) this is a convenience. Even when it's being exercised with some significant low frequency content, the power consumption rarely exceeds 20W.
As far as the 5-star rating goes, it comes with a caveat: It's not a 1KW 15" Velodyne, and it's never ever going to move that kind of air at those kinds of frequencies. BUT, for what it's intended to do, within its clear limitations, it's an excellent choice. I'd enthusiastically recommend it for any application within its intended envelope.

Like an earlier reviewer, I too have this subwoofer paired with some 30 year old Minimus 7s.
The room I watch TV in is 13ft X 16ft. This subwoofer fills it brilliantly. I have the volume at about 50%. I used the auto setup on my Onkyo AV amp to set the input levels. I am running a 3.1 system. The Onkyo auto setup was much better than my manual attempt.
I highly recommend this subwoofer for a small or medium viewing room.

This puppy will not shake and rock you. But it has sufficient bass to complement a pair of satellite speakers to give a very satisfying full spectrum sound, without taking up half of your room. Highly recommended for someone who's sick of the first 5 seconds of Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra. Been there, done that, not that thrilling really after a while.

Hooked up to Yamaha home theater sound bar, which is connected to a Samsung 55-inch LCD TV. This unit packs a wallop for such a small footprint. It also matches the sleek elegant design of both the Samsung and the sound bar. Downward facing also gives a full surround-like bass response.
Frequency response is adjustable and adjustments work well.
Overall couldn't be happier with this purchase, and a great value!

I got this sub with expectations that I did not think could be met! At 1/2 volume I get nice tight bass in my set up. Now mind you, I am running a ported enclosure on top of the unit which hides the sub and provides more sound control.
I think if your looking for some extra bass and not looking to shake everything and already have a Yamaha setup this is the unit for you!

In moving from analog to digital in my 2003 Jayco 5th wheel I needed a powered, RCA connection subwoofer to replace the old Panasonic simple speakerwire woofer. This econmical speaker fills the bill for great bass in tight locations. I simply plugged it in with included wires and re-ran the Pioneer Receiver MCACC surround sound set-up. Very satisified customer.

I use this in my bedroom and it fits into the entertainment center. Only negative is that I have to cut it on/off. If I had Yamaha receiver it would work just as any other. This was not a show stopper in my bedroom but in a well used environment it would be a real negative. Otherwise a very good product. Great sound from it!
