It offers the ability to record SD resolution and play back HDV resolution, view content on its built-in 7" TFT 16:9 LCD screen, or output 1080/60i and 720/30p signals to an HD display. This versatile deck is designed with professional features like x.v.Color Technology, crystal clear still/slow-motion playback, MiniDV SP/LP record/playback, IEEE-1394 (DV) interface, component output, and 12-Bit/16-Bit PCM digital audio recording.

The Sony GV-HD700 offers professional reliability and superb functionality in the field or in the studio. Its portable, lightweight design ensures ease of use in a variety of video productions, making it an ideal acquisition tool for producers, directors, DPs, editors, and any camera rig operator.

x.v.Color Technology
Capable of passing the x.v.Color signal recorded by your Sony HD camcorder to your compatible HDTV. With the ability to reproduce nearly twice as many (1.8x) viewable colors.
Video
DV format offers up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution and significantly higher S/N ratio to provide stunning video performance. It offers up to 60 minutes of digital (SP) recording, or up to 90 minutes (LP), on one MiniDV cassette.
i.LINK
DV In/Out (IEEE 1394) enables editing or dubbing between another Digital camcorder, VCR or computer equipped with DV Capture Card, with virtually no generation loss.
Digital Program Editing
Built in assemble editor lets you mark cut-in and cut-out points for up to 20 separate scenes. Use the walkman as your source while controlling via infrared, almost any remote-capable camcorder or VCR as your recorder.
Audio
Records PCM digital audio in two modes: 16-bit mode for CD-quality stereo sound on one track, while the 12-bit mode records stereo on two tracks so you can add background music or voice-overs.
7" Display
Incorporates a 7" color LCD screen with Active Matrix technology to provide clear, accurate colors for on-the-spot playback of recordings.
Analog In/Out
Increasing your creative possibilities, analog in/out makes it possible to connect your video walkman to a range of analog devices. Once connected you're able to edit sounds and images between the two and produce original films with a personal touch. Also lets you preserve your analog library by copying it onto a digital format.
Playback Zoom
While playing back your images on this unit, it allows you to edit your images by zooming in (up to 2 times) and cropping your picture (up, down, left, right). You can save the new image as a separate file. Resize lets you save a copy of an image to a smaller or larger file size.
USB Terminal
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a computer industry standard that is designed to simplify interconnection between digital equipment such as A/V devices and computers. It makes quality, higher-volume data transfer possible between your video walkman and PC, printer or other equipped device via a simple, one cable connection.
USB Image Capture function lets you stream live and recorded moving images to PC via USB port.
Memory Stick Duo Media Slot
Capture digital still images up to 1440 x 810 resolution from video-tapes, analog inputs or digital video i.LINK input, directly onto Memory Stick media (sold separately). The images can be easily transferred to PCs for emailing, printing or sharing with other compatible Memory Stick devices (sold separately).
L and M Series Info-Lithium Battery Compatibility
Compatible with both L and M series Info-Lithium batteries. It offers the ability to charge the battery at anytime, because unlike NiCad (Nickel Cadium) batteries, Sony's rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries are not subject to a life shortening "memory effect". I bought this despite reading the other review complaining that it cannot handle 24p footage. Not true.

I have tapes with 60i, 24p, and 24pA footage, and it handles it all, fine. Yes, even with Advanced Pulldown Removal to Final Cut Pro.

So, I think the other reviewer was talking about one of the incarnations of 24 frame video (like the proprietary CANON) variety found on the HV20 and HV30. BTW, I don't think ANY DV deck can handle those formats, yet. Which is why you need to use the camera you shot with to digitize those types of footage.

But if you, like me, have DV footage in 24p or 24pA (say, from a DVX-100 or an HVX-200), this deck WILL work. Including transferring the flagged frames over firewire into Final Cut Pro 6, when dealing with 24pA footage.

Also, it's nice that the 16x9 screen can recognize anamorphic DV footage and display it properly, instantly.

Another nice touch, you can use the deck to "loop through" video signals into an non-linear editor, via firewire. In other words, you can send composite into the deck and have it go right into Final Cut Pro via firewire, WITHOUT the use of a tape. And vice versa! So... if you own this deck, you won't need that Canopus box whose sole function is that. So, you'll save $200 - 300, there.

I was very disappointed to find that the GV-HD700 will not play HD tapes shot at 30F or 24F on my Canon XHAI or HV20a camcorders (apparently on all Canon camcorders). It will play only 60i tapes.

Sony, having built a machine that will not function with Canon camcorder tapes (unless they are recorded at 60i), did not have had the good spirit to issue an appropriate warning in their advertisements and in the owners manual. Very bad consumer policy, I am sure!

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:

I bought this product a few years ago because a shooter I worked with left a box of tapes for a project shot on an HD Sony camera. My firm works primarily with Canon and JVC cameras and we shoot in 720p mostly and sometimes in SD DV. For DV, the GVHD700 is excellent. But if you're shooting in pro HD and are not using Sony's specific HD 1080i format, you're throwing away almost $! It can't playback 720 60p and it won't even output 720 30p through the the 'i-Link'! Now, it can be used as a studio recorder for cameras that can record 1080i out to a secondary recorder. Actually, it's not a bad monitor and the choice of batteries is wide as you can use 'I or L' Lithium batteries. It's not very heavy and it's fairly sturdy. But the inflexibility of usable video formats, no HDMI 'in' port, antiquated 'Memory Stick' slot and no firmware updates to make the unit more usable, the GV-hd700 is NOT worth more than $ just as a DV recorder and field monitor. Sony needs to make a newer version with modern formats in mind, then it would be worth the asking price. If you're still using tape, don't waste your money unless you are using dv, or sony's 1080i format only.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:

I wanted a recorder for feeding tapes into Adobe Premiere to save wear and tear on my HDR-FX1 camera. I read through a lot of reviews that said that it wouldn't work well with Premiere but I have had zero problems. It connects via firewire and is fully controllable from the capture interface. Also, with the HDR-FX1 connected I could not see a preview of the video while capturing - I just saw a generic Sony graphic stating that video preview was not available. Not the case with the GV-HD700 as I get a full preview while capturing. I also like that I can connect the player to my big screen via HDMI and watch videos there - something not possible with the camera as it lacks an HDMI port. The unit is compact and very rugged and the remote is nice for controlling the functions from a distance. It is also the same remote my camera uses so now I have a spare. It also uses the same batteries as my camera although I have not used it with battery power as I have been able to connect it via the AC unit. One note - the batteries only charge when the unit is off which I found odd but not really an issue for my use. I'm glad I ignored the negative reviews I've read as I am really enjoying this great little recorder.

Plays all my miniDV tapes: HD & SD/SP & SD/LP. No problems w/it so far. Only complaint is no HDMI-In for recording 1080 onto miniDV from other sources. Price for this is steep, but if it holds up for a few decades now that video tape is dead and everything is recorded to SD Cards, I wont complain.

Very compact, solid unit. Although I currently spend a great deal of time importing footage into Final Cut Pro via memory cards, I still have a library of mini dv tapes that I work with in my projects. Rather than hanging onto a Canon XH A1 that cost over 3500., I was able to trade this camera in for a 7D and still have money left over to put towards the GV-HD700 .

Works great! I edit on Avid Media Composer 6. I was able to use this deck to capture miniDV footage with a native codec of DV 25 411 into a 30i NTSC project in Avid, using a Firewire 9-Pin to 4-Pin cable. The only thing with Avid is that this particular deck does not show up as a preset. You have to choose GV-D300 instead, and then all works well. Thanks, B&H!

I use this for preserving family memories. I also have the Sony GV-D200 (8mm tapes), which is why I purchased the GV-HD700. I would have preferred this to not have a screen, but it does. I've used it to play miniDV tapes and currently a family friend is using it as a digital converter in connection with a VHS VCR. It doesn't have as solid of a feel as the GV-D200, but seems as capable of doing its job. I'm not a fan of Sony products in general, but these devices have done a good job, unlike the other methods I tried.

This item is compact and convenient, but it has a couple of quirks, the most annoying of which is the AUDIO SETTING tab. When I insert a tape whose contents have been recorded in HD 16-bit audio, I find the DV AU. MODE is set permanently at 12-bit, not 16-bit. I can transfer the material into Final Cut Pro 7 without getting sync drift, but whether the finished piece will output properly to broadcast or DVD, etc., remains to be seen... and heard. Very annoying. Otherwise satisfactory, at least thus far. While it is easily transportable, you need SEPARATE MACHINES internationally: one for NTCS, another for PAL.

This is the perfect mini DV player for our school's TV studio. It was simple enough to hook up that I didn't have to read the directions! Good quality sound and image. I would highly recommend it.

I bought this unit from B&H several years ago, when HDV was still wanted, it has broken down with error codes, and the fire wire port went totally out. I sent it back to sony. Repaired. Now more error codes and Tape transport will not thread, local authorized Sony repair says it's proprietary and only Sony factory can fix it. Back in the box again to be mailed off for more down time. I do like it when it runs, it is not supper sturdy, I always am afraid of dropping it. I wish it had a tripod mount and the LCD screen is weak. Hard to see in direct sun light.

This is what my small video studio has been needing to save wear and tear on my HDV cameras. Awesome gadget delivers on promise and more -- "more" because the cables others complained weren't there have been added by Sony, and image is sharp and clear on 7" screen. Ports (i/o) seem rock solid and durable despite others complaints. Have used it as a monitor on location so its doing double duty here in the field as well. I did purchase additional firewire (6 pin) to HDMI (cost 4.95 each) and it really zings with full 1440 into Final Cut X or FCP 7 (I use both but as a side note, am coming to appreciate the many small wonders of X). I save to LaCie 1TB Hard Drive -- if you get stuttering video its probably because you saved to a less speedy drive like I initially did (WD 500 GB at 5000 RPM) . Works perfect going into the computer HD (27" iMac at 7000 turns) too -- and It will display good images during FF and RW; has assignable buttons for goodies like image zoom/or image capture. Finally, it responds well to remote commander or to FCX on screen controls. This is inexpensive for pro equipment -- I'm working now, absolutely love it! Thanks Sony & BH

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:

I had sold my Sony HDV minidv cam, but still had over 100 minidv tapes to edit. I turned to the GV-HD700 for this task. So far it has worked perfectly. The controls and menus are the same as my cameras so set up and uploading to the computer was easy. I had to purchase a seperate cable to connect to my computer, and should have purchased it when I bought the walkman.

The controls are easy to see, and the unit seems solid. The picture quality is excellent, audio through the onboard speaker is good. I would recommend this unit to anyone having to upload their HDV tapes.

I have not used it to record to minidv yet, but that may be an option after I get through all those old tapes first. I have not used the battery yet but sony batteries have always been good to go.

Definitely a wise investment for anyone using capture cameras as their go-to tape decks. There are ample connection options and it's very easy to use and connect to a computer.
The controls are quite simple, the display is fairly large & very clear, and the deck can conveniently run off of Sony L-Series batteries if you are away from an outlet.

If using for video capturing, just make sure to buy a Firewire & you'll be set

If you are still using mini DV tapes I would suggest you buy this VCR as it appears to me that SONY is no longer making them. My HDV camera's i-link broke and repairs would be over $550. Now I can still download via firewire (i-link as Sony calls it) to my computer to edit unedited mini DV tapes as well as archive to mini-DV tape. The machine itself works beautifully and it even can record HDV in HDV to tape.

We have about 500 mini dv tapes of live event coverage that our PR department has been crying to have access to for years now. We're using this deck to pull it all into a file server for use in creating marketing and other video pieces. It's much more pleasant to do this with the sony clamshell than with a camera. And this deck is considerably cheaper than the high-end units we looked at--even used ones.
