Questions? Ask our experts:

The CAM Engineering Reporter Flash Ring is a tool that is ideal for reporters and event photographers. It allows any flash to rotate around the camera's optical axes, and keeps the flash centered above the lens in either horizontal or vertical camera positions. The bracket will not restrict your hand's access to the vertical grip or vertical shutter release button when the camera is in the "portrait" position.

The flash is mounted on a slider which is designed for high stability and effortless swing of the flash with one hand. No locking or unlocking is required to secure the flash in either position. The unit is light and compact so it can be kept attached to the camera at all times.

Fits any SLR with built-in or attached vertical grip & tripod socket centered under lens (SLR cameras w/o grip can be used with optional RFR105 universal adapter)
Accepts any flash with hot shoe through standard off-camera TTL cable (not included)
The ring's diameter (I.D. 4.6") is big enough to provide room for the largest lenses used by event photographers and small enough not to restrict any camera operations
Unique slider mechanism provides two self-locking flash positions 90° apart
Precision machined, rigid, all aluminum construction adds only 9 oz to the camera's weight
Camera with mounted unit can rest on a flat surface when not in use
Does not restrict access to the lens locking mechanism used for swapping lenses
The ring's position can be adjusted 3/4" front-to-back to allow access to controls on various lens types

Having purchased a number of brackets over the years I can finally say I've found one I really like: the Reported Flash Ring by Cam Engineering. I use this bracket at weddings and events and am very pleased at the way it functions and the light weight of its construction.

The flash rotates around the axis of the lens smoothly and then snaps into position at the end of the rotation. Very secure. Installation was a snap with the included hardware and I was pleased at the options for equipment; good thinking on the part of the manufacturer.

The only adjustment I had to make was in how I adjust my lens focal length: I normally shoot with my hand under the lens but part of the bracket is in the way (if it were on the other side it would be a 5/5). Adjusting only took a short amount of time.

Good value for money, solid construction and a well thought out design make me a happy customer.

the only major show stopper I've discovered that if your flash attachemnts (diffusers) stick out past the end of your lens (24-70 zoom in my case), be ready for some nearly full frame lens flairing.

Comments about CAM Engineering Reporter Flash Ring:

I use a traditional flash bracket to help elimate shadows. The Flash Ring's compact side is an advantage to the much larger and bulkier bracket; however the flash sitting in front of the camera body (vs over the body) makes the camera (Canon 50D)a bit off balance and harder to handle. I was surprised shadows are subdued even though the flash doesn't sit as high up.Over all good product.

Used a big flash frame for years that was the opposite of all the above. Don't miss it.

Comments about CAM Engineering Reporter Flash Ring:

I bought this for my D700 because of some issues regarding my sb900 damaging my camera's hot shoe. and since the ettl cord works fine i decided to go with a flash bracket instead. this way the heavy sb900 keeps off my hotshoe on the camera and i am able to bang up my gear like i do for weddings.
1- love having this peice! im able to shoot portrait style with having the flash up top instead of to the side.
2- its not all giant and ugly like most flash brackets and it keeps the flash right above the barrel of the lens.
3 - i would give it 5 stars but the issue i do see is that it does shift off alignment sometimes and does make my camera significantly heavier than just a flash on my hotshoe. Also i wish they made one that could be used without a adaptor if you do not have a verticle grip. I do not like the verticle grips(preference wise) and if they had a bracket that fits an slr body without a verticle grip i would definately buy it!

I am a pro photog, I shoot many different events and genres. I recently purchased this bracket for nightclub and red carpet events. I use my big Stroboframe for weddings. I have to say I am so impressed with the functionality and ease of the Cam Engineering bracket. Its compact and doesnt get in the way. And, it isnt a flimsy fold over bracket like most compact brackets are. This thing is well built, and functional. The mechanism to rotate the flash is easy but not too loose, and stays put when you want it too. The design of the bracket is such that it does not impede the use of the camera vertically. A great flash bracket, I will be buying others for my other cameras.

Comments about CAM Engineering Reporter Flash Ring:

After getting a lot of portrait shots with side shadows, I knew I needed something else. This won't totally solve your problems, as the shadows are now under the chin. I'm not a professional but I know I didn't want anything too bulky and this fit the bill. Definitely still mobile and compact and I love the fact that I can set it down. It is a little awkward holding the camera in a horizontal position because the bracket is in the way. Vertical positions are much better. It's pretty sturdy, but with my Nikon SB900, it is a little wobbly due to the weight. IMO, if they had designed it not to be a perfect circle, they could have added more screws to stabilize it. If your job is to turn quickly left/right I would not recommend this as your flash unit might flop down. Also, 4 stars because you have to purchase another pricey adapter if you dont have a camera with a vertical battery grip. I opted to pay a little more for a generic battery grip versus paying for a useless adapter. I hope overtime this does not get too loose.

This product allows you to very quickly slide your flash to work in either position keeping your light consistent between orientations. locks right into place easily. it is light but feels durable and mounts easily. it fits great on my D3. also you don't have to worry about setting your camera down and having it fall over, it sits your camera perfectly on any flat surface.

I am wedding photographer and I purchased two of these brackets this year. This bracket makes it very easy to go from horizontal to vertical frames and is very lightweight. I can sit the camera without the fear of it toppling over. I also own a just rite bracket but the weight of that bracket with camera and flash made for a long day compared to Cam. The only negative was at the beginning, Changing lenses at first was a bit awkward because the ring around the lens. After playing with it for a couple of days, learning to loosen the base screw and using the slide of the screw slot, it about 5 - 10 second process.

comparing to my Stroboframe camera flip ..

The good .. lightweight , compact , stands up with camera attached , easy to flip flash , keeps the flipit in the right position , ingenious design ,

The bad .. have to unscrew camera to replace battery , realigning red beam pattern is more difficult , no more handle to hold onto , don't know if all that sliding back and forth will wear out tracks , overpriced ,

Comments about CAM Engineering Reporter Flash Ring:

I purchased this product as an alternative to the standard flash bracket and was originally drawn to it simply by the design (and the fact that it was made specifically for cameras with vertical grip). I was unable to find much info (or any real reviews) before I decided to purchase but I figured, what the heck. Obviously you need an off camera cord which in my case was the Canon oc-e3 which bolted directly to the bracket with the supplied hardware. The bracket works well and you can simply rotate the flash with your left hand to a locked position or anywhere within the axis of its rotation (without locking) if you wanted to get creative with the flash bounce. It is a little awkward at first to figure out how to operate the lens zoom with this new found object in the way, but it wasn't but a few minutes that you get used to it. A good design feature is that you can literally set the camera down with the flash in vertical or portrait orientation and not have if flop over. Overall, I would recommend this product because it is very well designed and while it is a bit more expensive than your standard bracket, it is sturdy, lightweight and overall works very well.

Comments about CAM Engineering Reporter Flash Ring:
