The EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon offers a bright maximum aperture and provides an ultra wide-angle view with the shortest focal length in the line-up of L-series lenses. Its diagonal angle of view is an impressive 114° - anything larger would be a fisheye lens.

This lens features completely redesigned optics, including two high-precision Aspherical elements and two UD-glass elements. This results in better contrast and sharpness at the outer edges, and a reduction in chromatic aberrations that can sometimes be seen with high-resolution digital SLRs. Its minimum focus distance is 7.9" and its truly circular diaphragm helps to create a pleasing out-of-focus background.

The 14mm f/2.8L II USM lens uses a rear focusing system, high-speed CPU, and a ring-type ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) with revised electronics for faster, more responsive and quiet AF. Manual focus override allows for precise manual focus even in AF mode.

This wide aperture lens is the ideal choice for architectural, wedding, or other pro-level photography applications and its moisture proof and dustproof sealing helps to ensure its durability.

A ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive responsive, near-silent high speed auto focus. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group with precision without overshoot. Full time manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF.
Two UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass lens elements correct chromatic aberration to achieve high resolution and contrast, without color fringing on subject outlines.
Two AL aspherical lens elements suppress aberrations for high image quality at all focal lengths.
Equipped with a fixed, petal-type hood and a gelatin filter holder at the rear.
Only lead free glass is used in the lens construction.

Landscape photography is my love. The 14mm f/2.8L lens is a very well constructed, wonderful piece of equipment that will both challenge you compositionally and thrill you with surpises of what it is capable of. I had recently acquired a 5d-Mark III and was in need of a wide-angle lens. I had used a 17-55mm zoom lens on a Rebel 1.6 crop sensor camera, and found that a majority of my landscape pictures were taken at the widest point on the lens, i.e. 17mm. In these situations I was often wishing for "more". I decided, on this new FF camera, I wanted to use the best glass so as not to limit the end result in any way. I researched, read countless reviews, and wrestled with the different choices that I had: 17mm or 24mm tilt-shift lens, 24mm L lens, 16-35mm L zoom lens, etc. I found in all of my research that there were no negative reactions to this lens. Everyone praised it for its clarity and the creativity that it inspired. That was my tipping point....and I have never looked back. I will need to acquire a few more wide primes, but I am very satisfied, and challenged with this awesome Canon lens.It is well worth the money invested!

For years I have longed for this lens to shoot city and landscapes. I had the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II but the reviews convinced me that I was missing something not having the 14mm. I finally pulled the trigger. I can happily report that It did meet my expectations as another fine piece of glass from Canon. However, in doing comparison shots with my Canon 16-35mm F2.8 II, I determined that other than a slightly wider frame, the latter at 16mm was equivalent in quality and image to the 14mm. The greater width was insufficient to justify it. So I returned the 14mm. If you don't have a super wide lens, my recommendation is to go with the zoom. It is equivalent almost in every dimension, it is a zoom, and best of all it is about $500 cheaper.

Comments about Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

For an ultra wide, this lens is seriously sharp. Obviously sharper then my 16-35mm f/2.8L II. It is a wide angle so there is always going to be distortion but this lens handles it very well. Be very careful with the front element, because of how far the front element bows out (There is no way, that I have found, to protect it while shooting). None the less with the exception of the price, I could not be happier with this lens.

I will use the lens for super wide landscape photos here in Colorado. We have super wide views here!

It is a spectacular appearing lens and I will feel proud to use it; both the glass and Red Line!

I am most concerned about the huge convex lens and keeping it scratch free.

I use this lens for real estate photography and when the images are saved as web size it is very satisfactory. At full resolution and one-to-one image viewing the corners are very soft up to f8. Outside it has the most chromatic aberration of any of the Canon L lens I've used. This can be corrected in Adobe Lightroom but is annoying. The lens correction works well in Lightroom. If you shoot f8 or better this is a good lens.

Comments about Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I shoot a lot of scenics in HDR, and used the 16-35 f2.8 lens for many shots, but it had significant keystoning in many of the elements.
The most notable thing about the 14mm is that all structures are straightened, without bending them in Photoshop!
It also has such a wide angle of view, very dramatic images can be achieved.
My dream has come true to own this fine lens!

Comments about Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

For landscapes the perspective given by this lens on a full frame or 1.3X crop (EOS 1d Mark iv) are super for making landscape views pop out. The contrast is good even without any added filter (there is no filter thread). It is big and heavy to lug around, but the shallow depth of field at f2.8 is great for isolating subjects, and the effect is pleasing. The flare on this lens is well controlled and not a problem. I've tried various alternatives but this is the best I've seen yet--if I had an ASP-C (1.6x) crop however I'd have a hard time justifying the high cost, a Canon EF-S 10-22 is worth a close look.

Comments about Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I'm really loving this lens, but it took me three copies to find one I was happy with. The first was a bit soft at center wide open (but sharpened nicely stopped down), but the corners were pretty good. The second was very sharp in the center/right side of the frame, but the left side and corners all around were noticeably smeared. The third version proved to be a mix of both... very sharp center wide open and decent corner performance.

I love this lens. The perfect super wide prime 2.8 for the 7d.

It works as a fish-eye for full frame sensors like 5d though.

                                  Small, solid, rugged, durable.
