Questions? Ask our experts:

The EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon offers a bright maximum aperture and provides an ultra wide-angle view with the shortest focal length in the line-up of L-series lenses. Its diagonal angle of view is an impressive 114° - anything larger would be a fisheye lens.

This lens features completely redesigned optics, including two high-precision Aspherical elements and two UD-glass elements. This results in better contrast and sharpness at the outer edges, and a reduction in chromatic aberrations that can sometimes be seen with high-resolution digital SLRs. Its minimum focus distance is 7.9" and its truly circular diaphragm helps to create a pleasing out-of-focus background.

The 14mm f/2.8L II USM lens uses a rear focusing system, high-speed CPU, and a ring-type ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) with revised electronics for faster, more responsive and quiet AF. Manual focus override allows for precise manual focus even in AF mode.

This wide aperture lens is the ideal choice for architectural, wedding, or other pro-level photography applications and its moisture proof and dustproof sealing helps to ensure its durability.

A ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive responsive, near-silent high speed auto focus. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group with precision without overshoot. Full time manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF.
Two UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass lens elements correct chromatic aberration to achieve high resolution and contrast, without color fringing on subject outlines.
Two AL aspherical lens elements suppress aberrations for high image quality at all focal lengths.
Equipped with a fixed, petal-type hood and a gelatin filter holder at the rear.
Only lead free glass is used in the lens construction.

Landscape photography is my love. The 14mm f/2.8L lens is a very well constructed, wonderful piece of equipment that will both challenge you compositionally and thrill you with surpises of what it is capable of. I had recently acquired a 5d-Mark III and was in need of a wide-angle lens. I had used a 17-55mm zoom lens on a Rebel 1.6 crop sensor camera, and found that a majority of my landscape pictures were taken at the widest point on the lens, i.e. 17mm. In these situations I was often wishing for "more". I decided, on this new FF camera, I wanted to use the best glass so as not to limit the end result in any way. I researched, read countless reviews, and wrestled with the different choices that I had: 17mm or 24mm tilt-shift lens, 24mm L lens, 16-35mm L zoom lens, etc. I found in all of my research that there were no negative reactions to this lens. Everyone praised it for its clarity and the creativity that it inspired. That was my tipping point....and I have never looked back. I will need to acquire a few more wide primes, but I am very satisfied, and challenged with this awesome Canon lens.It is well worth the money invested!

For years I have longed for this lens to shoot city and landscapes. I had the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II but the reviews convinced me that I was missing something not having the 14mm. I finally pulled the trigger. I can happily report that It did meet my expectations as another fine piece of glass from Canon. However, in doing comparison shots with my Canon 16-35mm F2.8 II, I determined that other than a slightly wider frame, the latter at 16mm was equivalent in quality and image to the 14mm. The greater width was insufficient to justify it. So I returned the 14mm. If you don't have a super wide lens, my recommendation is to go with the zoom. It is equivalent almost in every dimension, it is a zoom, and best of all it is about $500 cheaper.

Comments about Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Bought the Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM (prime) lens and took it to France to shoot pictures every day for three months in 2011. Shot over 8,000 raw images and many videos using my 5D Mark II camera, mostly on tripod, many of them with this lens. Used the lens mostly in Paris for seven weeks doing street photography all over town, typically more than 10 hours a day and had three other lenses with me, which I have more recently upgraded. Used this 14mm lens to capture a stunning video coming down on the glass elevator from top of the Eiffel Tower at night. Seeing the lighted interior skeletal structure complexity through the lens was astonishing. Also used it to shoot video out the windows while riding Metro subway trains through tunnels and over bridges all over Paris. Some of those were fascinating. The lens is heavy but carry-weight is a price you pay for good glass. The biggest thing that worried me was potential damage to the protruding curved front element. Best to keep the lens cover on when not in use. More recently I bought some other Canon lenses including a Canon 8-15mm fisheye. I compared test shots using the 14mm prime versus shots using the 8-15mm fisheye set at 14mm. The fisheye images were more distorted, which is useful when you want that fisheye effect. But the 14mm f/2.8 prime gives a much better image with almost no fisheye effect or any significant barrel distortion considering its wideness. Great for interiors, urban environments, gardens, architecture, concerts, events, nature and human subjects, especially artistic models and creative shots.I almost but not quite agree with the commenter who said the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 zoom is just as good for the widest shots. I recently bought that lens from B&H. It might seem that the 14mm lens is not much wider but I did some test comparisons. The 14mm is considerably wider than the 16-35mm lens, which by the way, is also a fantastic lens.If you can budget for some real lens diversity, then get this Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM lens even if you already own the 16-35mm zoom or the 8-15mm fisheye. The 14mm lens is choice for capturing excellent wide images and stunning videos, especially when you are inside of a surrounding scene such as a theater, a forest, a city, a room, a group of human subjects or the structure of Tour Eiffel.

Just got this lens. I will use it of all kinds of work, but it will be a great asset in my commercial work especially real estate photography. Just completed a shoot of 5 condo units on the beaches of South Walton County FL. Absolutely awesome lens. I was able to get "panoramic" views of small spaces, creating photographs with great appeal. Potential purchasors will feel they have been in the unit. No distortion at all if you get the shot set up correctly. I was even able work in hand held mode for most of my shots. Looking at the work in Capture One V7 and the image clarity, color, and POP is all I could want!

After a lifetime of photography, I am seldom surprised with exceptional quality equipment, but this amazes me. It is just plain better than good. With my full size sensors the wide , sharp view is very impressive and avoids the fish eye effect that I wish to avoid.

Comments about Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

For an ultra wide, this lens is seriously sharp. Obviously sharper then my 16-35mm f/2.8L II. It is a wide angle so there is always going to be distortion but this lens handles it very well. Be very careful with the front element, because of how far the front element bows out (There is no way, that I have found, to protect it while shooting). None the less with the exception of the price, I could not be happier with this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I will use the lens for super wide landscape photos here in Colorado. We have super wide views here!

It is a spectacular appearing lens and I will feel proud to use it; both the glass and Red Line!

I am most concerned about the huge convex lens and keeping it scratch free.

I use this for dancing and other wides at weddings. It is great as it has minimal lens distortion compared to other wides (like the fisheye). Focus sharp, fast and it is light weight for an L lens. Love it!
