Note: When using the Nikon EH-5a AC Adapter with the Nikon D3000, D3100, D5100, D5000 you MUST also use the (optional) Nikon EP-5 power connector. When using the Nikon EH-5a AC Adapter with the (optional) Nikon D40 & D60 you MUST also use the Nikon EP-5 power connector.

I just bought a D700 and had an AC adapter fro my D200 but it won't work on a D700. Using an AC adapter assures your shutter won't suddenly close when you are cleaning the sensor. It is also great when you are doing things like updating your data using Nikon control Sw. And of course for any studio work. when you are hooked up to the AC adapter it will also give you maximum frame rate and it is essential for things like time lapsed photography/

There is very little choice in the market other than the genuine unit as the camera plug is a custom Nikon. The only reason this doesn't get a 5 star is the price.

Stop worrying about your batteries going dead. Yes, having a spare is smart, but, using this power supply is the best way to go. Not only will you have worry free power you'll be keeping the internal battery at full charge if you move to an area without A/C power. You will be glad you have this in your bag!

I purchased this product to do time-lapse photography as well as for situations requiring extended use of live view as well as for tethered shooting.
The cord length is sufficient and provides me with generous freedom of movement. I find that the cord attaches very securely to my D700; I have not had any problems with the cord coming loose while moving around.

This accessory is a necessity if you will be using your digital SLR tethered (for example when using a camera stand for dedicated macro work). It is a bit pricey and I am still irritated that each Nikon camera requires a different AC adapter combo, but it works!

This is just a basic 9v 4500ma power adapter with a very special Nikon only connector to attach to the the camera. You can buy a similar power adapter for a lot less just about anywhere except for the special connector.
It is a very good quality product, however. I have had no issues with it.
I use mine to power my D700 for very long exposures (several hours) through my telescope.
If you are doing long exposures you will drain the internal battery very quickly - keeping the shutter open consumes a lot of power.
If you are using your camera tethered then this is almost a required accessory.
And while its annoying to have 2-3 stiff cables hanging from the camera it does work well.
The only real negative about the connector is that unlike the remote connector it isn't screwed in and is easily pulled out when my telescope is moved or re-aimed.
A possible improvement might be to make the cable coiled and a little less susceptible to tangling

Though I haven't actually given this item a try, I knew and know that I need it. So I bought it! It undoubtedly will serve its purpose with me with both my cameras (D90 & D7000), as it fits both of them, though the D7000 needs an additional adapter. It's Nee-kon (proper pronounciation with the Japanese), so I take it that this item will live up to its purpose, even though I have not used it yet. Thanks Nee-kon).

I gave the EH-5A 5 stars because it is a 5 star product. It's essential for time-lapse or studio/wedding/portrait work. I've made several time-lapse movies and great star-trail shots now and not having to worry about the batteries running out is such a nice thing!That being said, the price is disappointing to say the least. It's essentially a laptop power supply with a proprietary connection to the camera (hence the reason the price can be what it is). I wouldn't expect it to be dirt cheap, but [$] (as of 2/2011) is a bit steep in my book.
