          Used for timelapse photography.
OK range if you can get it connected. First try on for a new connection seems fine, but once you start using different networks or more than one machine/ solution, to get it to connect, seems like bingo. Have more or less given up using this, because it takes me too long to get connected.

I use this product to take pictures with my laptop. What i like about this is it looks a battery grip ,but it's much more! Not so great is the small LCD display.

Comments about Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter:

We use 40D's, 1D mk. III's & 1Ds Mk. III's in multi-camera setups to make computer simulators - all connected via ethernet cables to an FTP server. In a wired setup (in our cases with up to 6 cameras shooting concurrently a Gigabit network is required) this is an extremely useful device. We get all photos downloaded in RAW in almost real-time which with e.g. Lightroom's ability to automatically import photo's from a folder allow us to immediately monitor the individual photos.
We control the cameras via the USB port, so it is a GREAT improvement that this does not occupy the USB port as the WFT-1 for the 5D's do.
The product has two limitations: It apparently cannot run on external power unless you modify the device (the AC adapter fits, but does not work as the lid cannot be closed as the cord exit is missing) and it requires separate powersupply. A battery lasts for days though so it is less of a problem. Also, anybody who have used their 40D's with the battery grip first has hopefully kept the battery compartment lid for the body as the wireless does not trigger the lid microswitch - although also this can be modified relatively easily.

Comments about Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter:

An earlier review indicated problems and caused me initial concern. However, this is an excellent product and it works as advertised, but it may take some guidance (possible from Canon Tech Services or others) to do the initial network setups, especially if one is not familiar with networks; user manual is excellent. I have my networks configured as two ad-hoc networks (laptop – Canon 40D-WFT, no router required): one for non-secure (initial test setup) and one for secure transmission (regular use) with either selectable at camera turn-on, after one-time setup. With my wireless lighting and slaves, and the 40D and the WFT-E3/E3-A my studio is wireless and eliminates concerns about cords and damaged equipment from accidents and provides added flexibility during the shoot. A great piece of technology.

Comments about Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter:

This product is remarkable. I read a bad review on this site but whoever wrote it did not do their homework. The product works exactly as described. [...]I did not need a wireless router. The WFT-E3A transfers files directly to my Apple laptop with no need for any other equipment. It only takes one time for someone to trip over a USB cable and pull your laptop off the table crashing down on the ground to see the added benefit of this wireless transmitter.Shooting with this product frees me to move around and still clients can instantly see the results in realtime. This WFT-E3A also works with the new Canon 50D. I have no doubt that this technology will change the way we work.
