The AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens from Nikon is a fast aperture standard zoom lens designed for photojournalism and general photography with wide-angle to portrait length perspectives. Optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX (full-frame) and DX-format image sensors it provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 36-105mm on DX-format cameras. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light and creates a shallow depth of field with pleasing out-of-focus highlights enhanced by a rounded 9-blade diaphragm.

The optical design includes three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and Precision Glass Mold (PGM) aspherical lenses that help control chromatic aberrations while enhancing sharpness and contrast, even at the widest aperture settings. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated lens coatings enhance light transmission, reducing flare and ghosting.

The internal focus system and Silent Wave Motor (SWM) feature provide swift autofocus with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation. Direct manual focus override enables fast and simple control over precise focus. Minimum focus is just 15" throughout the zoom range. This G-type lens does not feature an aperture ring on the lens body, resulting in a lighter and more compact lens. The filter diameter on this lens is 77mm and a large petal-shaped lens hood is included. Weather and dust resistant sealing add to its appeal as one of the most highly regarded and versatile lenses in the Nikon stable.

Fast aperture standard length zoom lens compatible with both FX- and DX-format DSLRs. On DX-format cameras it offers a focal length equivalent to 36-105mm in the 35mm format.
Versatile wide-angle to short telephoto perspectives and a wide maximum aperture, effective in low light, make this lens a popular workhorse for working professionals, enthusiasts and day-to-day shooters.
Three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and PGM aspherical lenses control chromatic aberrations and distortion while enhancing sharpness and contrast.
Super Integrated and Exclusive Nano Crystal Coatings reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.
Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet auto focusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range.
The Silent Wave Motor enables smooth, precise and near-silent AF action.
M/A Focus Mode switch enables quick response to changing situations between Auto and Manual focus operation.
Rugged construction and professional-grade dust and moisture resistance.

As a preface to the review let me say that I am a full-time professional photojournalist and publish images weekly in glossy magazines and newspapers in most major countries. That being said, this review is for anyone interested but the application of the lens falls in the realm of "heavy use" under ALL conditions (Rain, humidity, sand, dust, heat, cold, inside my bag on my shoulder)
I have written before that I typically HATE zoom lenses because I am a snob for primes. Though, I believe Nikon has always produced superb zoom lenses in very utilitarian focal lengths for professionals and discriminating amateurs alike.
I Read the reviews and not surprised at the raves! So I headed to my local to rent this lens for a week-long assignment. I ended up buying this lens and yanking my deposit on a 24mm f1.4 having been so pleased.
Also, keep in mind I owned the 17-35 2.8 and the 28-70 2.8 years ago and loved them both but always considered them like hammers....just to get a job done. So I have solid footing in comparing the lens to previous Nikon zooms used in the same setting
* Build & Quality is Second only to something Zeiss, or Leica makes. For an AF professional lens, it is WORTH EVERY PENNY in this department. Well balanced in your hand, Sturdy "drum-tight" construction with ample seals. The circumference of the lens makes handling a snap both on and off the body especially considering the weight. Nikon scored BIG with the design in that typically lenses in this class and aperture rating are short and fat and of course relatively heavy. Though not at all excessive, the weight is a reality of producing incredible images and even many amateurs have come to realize a little extra weight in the bag is well worth it.
The focus ring surface is tacky, and moves smoothly when rotated. Silent with no hesitations. There is enough resistance for fast accurate manual adjustments.
The Zoom Ring is PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT!!! For me, I wish my 70-200 VRII Zoom Ring was as good! Smooth as butter with the perfect calibration of resistance. Close your eyes and practice you can practically hit the mark as you go from 24 to 70. The reduced circumference of the lens makes zooming the full range a precise single steady turn. Its the first lens I have been able to zoom while using my AF rear focus switch and get EVERY SHOT in focus on the first time. Again, the rubber is tacky and textured with a beveled edge for using your thumb or full hand or any style to get effective turns fast and accurate over a wide surface.
*The supplied accessories are as usual for Nikon; Excellent. The hood is easy to engage with wide threads and finally a decent lock that wont back out on you. I don't use the carry case but its certainly a nice supplied accessory made of ballistic nylon. I have seen shooters use them in the field for years without any problems so I guess they are rather useful.
* IMAGE QUALITY: well, I rented first as stated before and that sample knocked my socks off!! I tested my sample in the field and in my studio for a couple weeks now and they are the same. I Can't find a weakness in a single aperture for this lens at any focal length. Images are sharp with color reproduction being spot on! The bokeh produced is excellent at all focal lengths to boot.
I have opted for Wide Open 2.8 in Many instances where a flash could have easily been used. As many know 2.8 can be a nail-biter for press shooters at that shallow DOF we get worried and I can tell you this lens has earned my total trust. Images shot wide open are TACK SHARP!
*AF SYSTEM: As fast as can be. NEVER a problem keeping up even in high contrast and tricky situations. Unbelievably quiet you have to just engage the AF and look at the distance scale for fun!

Well that's my .02 and I am not a professional review guy so if I left anything out now let me say I have No Complaints ONLY RAVES. I LOVE THIS LENS AND FULLY TRUST IT.
There is NOTHING WORSE when you combine the variables of conditions and operator error etc with gear that can't be relied upon EVERY TIME. Well, this lens lets you worry about the externals and you can rest assured when you pull this out of your bag its all about YOU and the situation you are shooting.
5 stars across the board

This lens can be as good as the specs suggest, but only under the right circumstances. On a tripod or when shooting brightly lit subjects, it excels, but the lack of VR severely restricts its ability to deliver in real-world use. Unless the shutter speed is kept above 1/125, the high-resolution of a full-frame DSLR will magnify any camera shake and the keeper ratio drops to about ten percent. In this reviewer's experience, a lesser lens with VR (28-300 f/3.5-5.6) returns consistently higher results at low shutter speeds. The bottom line is, the gold ring and high price will impress your friends, but unless you are a professional, shooting portraits in the studio or shooting landscapes from a tripod, this lens is probably going to disappoint.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

I just purchased this lens (after reading all the hype) to use with my D610 and was very excited when I got it. Took it out on a Senior photo shoot. Got home and uploaded photos to my computer and noticed right away the majority of my photos were blurry and not in focus. Thankfully I also used my 85mm that day so I did have a few redeeming in focus photos and had another day where I did more shots with my Senior so I have photos I can give to my client but am very disappointed with this lens! I am exchanging it so will try again. If the next one is better will change my star rating.

My primary walk around lens on my d810, along with the 70-200 f2.8 in the bag.
Yes it's heavy, yes it's big, but holy cow is it worth all that !
Saving up now for the 14-24 f2.8 then l will be set for years.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

I shoot pretty much everything I can. I took a huge leap and bought a D810 which has been a great camera. With the camera I bought 2 lenses. This is the main lens and it has been a great lens with one major exception. It sometimes fails to focus and has to go back to Nikon to be repaired. It has failed three times and been back to Nikon twice in 4 months. They can't fix it and won't replace it. So I'm out the purchase price and without a working lens. When it worked it was great but now it's going on a shelf.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

I just received this lens out of the box with D750. I have own the D800E, afs 14-24 f2.8g, afs 85 f1.8g, and tried canon's own 135L and 85 f1.2L on 5D3 and also sony 55mm on A7r and A7ii and I know what is sharp when I see one. This is definitely one of the fastest, sharpest and most accurate zoom I have used. I've also owned the the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC and it is a very sharp, good lense. AF speed wise this lens beats the VC hands down. Contrast, color, bokeh, this lens is worth the price difference to the VC. If you shoot 1/FL shutter speed, lack of VR is not an issue. VR do not compensate for motion blur.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

I really hate when fellow photographers complain about such things as lens weight/camera weight. I received this lens, take it out the packaging and immediately laugh because the weight of this lens is so exaggerated. I have the coffee cup version of this lens and it doesn't outweigh that by much. All that aside, this thing performed masterfully right out the box. The auto focus was off (in bright conditions ) at first but that after warming up became a non issue after maybe 10 minutes of use. Colors are vibrant, distortion is slight at 24mm but again a non issue. Neither the Zoom ring or the focus ring gave me any trouble after spending almost 12hrs on a cold delivery truck. In summary, this lens reputation is very well deserved, and it will be interesting to see what improvements (beyond VR) Nikkor does when they release it's replacement later this year.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

Since 2007 I've owned five copies of the lens. It's a heavy and amazing lens if you can handle the size and be lucky enough to get a good copy. There is huge same variation and you need to make sure your copy is decent. Nikon can charge you a lot of money for fixing it. Among five copies I had, only two didn't need going back to Nikon for servicing.

The issues that I have had are:

        1. Stiff zoom ring.
        2. AF Distance scale window leaking light.
        3. AF inaccuracy at various focal length.
        4. AF front/back focus for entire FL.
        5. Not properly weather-sealed.

The lens is a beast but internally some crucial parts are made of plastic which explains the stiff zoom ring issue after some use.

Overall I think I can only give it three and half stars.

I had been wanting this lens for awhile. I had been using a 24-120 f4 and 70-200 f2.8. I really didnt have to have it with those 2 as my main 2 lenses. They pretty much covered it all. All of my Photographer friends say the 24-70 was their primary lens of choice. Now it's mine. I'm a Professional photographer and have now used it twice outdoors and in studio. I'm very happy and satisfied I finally bought it. The sharpness and speed focussing is amazing!

This lens is on my body 95% of the time. It just does it all. Fast, fast focus, quality build, and good for almost all general shooting requirements.

I have rented the 70-200 2.8 which is also great but really for limited use and situations. I also have the 28-300 which I use outdoors if I have to, but almost never do. I would rather use this lens and crop most of the time instead of mounting the 300. Of the Nikon holy trinity of lenses this is the one to buy first. Then either the 70-200 or 14-24.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

Ok, it's expensive. It's worth it if you need to shoot in low light (wedding, events). Autofocus in instantaneous, on par with the 300 f2.8 VR. Never any hunting or overshoot, just BAM! Even when I have to crank the ISO up to 6400 to have the hope of getting something, anything, the lens doesn't hesitate to focus properly. Scary, almost supernatural!Ok, having a good body makes a difference, and the D800e partnered with this lens will not keep you from getting the images you need when the light is terrible. Your clients will look at your output in shock and awe: you got this in the fricking dark?Sharpness: wow! I spent more time than I want to admit taking photos of tile floors and brick walls and pixel peeping. Everyone I handed my camera to who did this started laughing at how sharp the images are at the corners wide open.No VR, so you have to do your thing with the shutter button well. If you are looking into buying this lens and pairing it with a suitable body, you already know how to do this. The weight and feel with the body is excellent, giving an easy platform to get the shutter release smooth. One minor issue that everyone has commented on: the focus ring is easy to spin when zooming or switching from horizontal to vertical. Just hit the shutter button or back focus button (my current favorite) and you are in business again instantly.Tried a 28-70 f2.8, and the 24-70 is so much sharper, faster on focus, and more comfortable to grip that it isn't even in the same category. The 28-70 is good, but the 24-70 will make you smile each time you grab it. Fun trick: put 24-70 on a D800/D800e, set zoom to about 65mm, and put camera up to your eye. Then take it down, then put it back up. Walk around house or office with camera/lens up to your eye with this optically perfect 1x view of the world. Share with a friend. Friend will want to take camera and lens home, so hold on to strap!Stop reading and press the "Add to Cart" button. You will be very happy!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

This lens has an outstanding reputation amoung pro photographers. I can attest to that after owing it for one month. IQ (image quality) is outstanding. Bokeh is so smooth. AF focus speed is excellent. Zoom collar location is ergonomically excellent. Size of zoom collar is excellent. AF manual focus collar is very good. The weather sealing is good. Weight is not a problem for me, sold my 17-55mm F2.8 DX lens and moved up to full frame. So I am accustom to the weight.ON a D750 it's nicely balanced in both horizontal and vertical positions. This fast lens produces outstanding images. Very impressive lens. Yes it has been made for 5 years, 12/07, and does not have VR. From my perspective that is not a negative factor for me. It's more of a "nice to have" feature.Focus speed is a hair faster than the Tamron 24-70, image quality is similar, but the construciton of the Nikon lens is better and it allows me to use all my 77mm filters where the Tamron requires a bigger filter and I lose all my compatibility with my ExpoDisk, Circular polarizer, ND filters, and grad filter.Cauk up another big win for Nikon.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

I use 24-70 to take pictures inside and outside, in normal and low light conditions. It makes crisp clear pictures with excellent quality. It also produces very nice bokeh, you will love it. It is expensive, but it is worth it. And if you love photography, you should get it. You can probably be satisfied with pictures taken with a less expensive lens, but if you compare them with pictures taken with 24-70, you will see the difference. Bottom line is if you are newcomer and use this lens, you will get excellent pictures; if you are seasoned photographer, with this lens you will get outstanding pictures.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens:

Purchased this for use with a D810. It does NOT disappoint. Despite it's weight, I'll likely leave this lens on my camera most of the time. Focus speed is really quick and image quality is everything I hoped for.
