The Nikon AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens (Black) is a premium ultrafast super telephoto lens for Nikon F mount cameras. It is a very robust and durable lens. Its lightweight construction incorporates a magnesium die-cast barrel, and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing allows it to be used in more rugged situations.

This lens features the improved Vibration Reduction (VR II) system that allows handheld telephoto shooting, even in less-than-ideally lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed of about 4 stops faster. In addition, this lens also features the Tripod Detection mode, which reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release, when mounted on a tripod.

High-powered, super telephoto lens optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX- (23.9 x 36mm) and DX-format image sensors.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization--Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
New tripod detection mode reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release when mounted on a tripod.
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation.
Exclusive Nano Crystal Coat and a meniscus protective glass element combine to further reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.
Three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements control chromatic aberrations while enhancing color, sharpness and contrast, even at the widest aperture settings.
Rugged, reliable and lightweight, this lens features a magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade, dust- and moisture-resistant construction.
New A/M focus mode provides fast, secure switching between auto and manual focus operation.

    I overbought when I got this lens. As an accomplished photographer with 45 years of experience it was a huge investment and I really wasn't sure I'd be able to fully utilize the capabilities of the lens. I'm not sure what percentage of utilization I'm getting, but what I am getting out of the lens is spectacular. I've had several images published and have consistently turned out a much higher level of work than ever before. In the hands of a wonky professional the lens would be one of the best in the world without question. I do wildlife, nature and some fast-breaking fire/police scenes. The lens just reaches right into whatever scene you are shooting and allows you to pick up much more than you may have realized was happening. If you are in a cold sweat about getting this lens and whether or not you are up to it, you are. Do it. You will not regret for a second the decision to purchase such a fine piece of glass.

    I returned this and got the Nikon 300mm 2.8 with a 2.0 teleconverter to achieve basically the same results. The lens is enormous and was just to heavy for a 5'4" woman to lug around or even think about hiking or anything with. I would only recommend it if you are big and strong and can handle it. I wish I could.

      With my D810 behind this lens I'm getting amazing sharpness and detail and brilliant colors. I have wanted this lens for a long time and now I'm sorry I waited so long. You do need a robust tripod to anchor it down good. VR works great. I shoot mostly wildlife with this beast. And wow what a joy it is shooting it. Very fast and accurate focusing and tracking. This lens rocks.

      This lens is absolutely great for wildlife photography. I used it in combination with the Nikon D4 and I got razor sharp images. I was absolutely stoked with this lens. I thought the weight would be a problem but it wasn't. I did not like the mount it had come with so I bought the Wemberley and it was much easier to handle.

        Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

        I use this lens for wildlife photography, particularly birds in flight. It replaces my 500mm f4, which fell onto concrete floor and broke. I was at first a little worried about the weight, wondering if I could use it hand held. Well, yes I can. It is just two pounds heavier than the 500 but it is considerably sharper. I have tried it with all three converters, the TC 14, 17, and 20. The sharpness is there and I just tried shooting at 1/1000 second. No problem. I use the lens on my D800e, D7100, and the D4s. I look forward to great new shots.

        Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

        I use this lens for wildlife and landscape. I am thrilled with the results already,(and I am still on a learning curve). I live in the NE and it has been too cold for me to spend the time need with this lens. I read all the reviews too and said "how heavy can it be?" it's pretty heavy. I think hand held birds in flight would be a real challenge. The cost is …( well you know) but if you can swing it, it is a well made piece of art. Remember if you get a lens this big your gonna need a bigger tripod, and a gimbal if you don't already have one. There goes another couple grand. Life is short, if this is your passion just buy it.

              Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

              Every review you read will basically say the same thing. Some concise, some with more details in description, some more eloquently written. But when you chisel away and get to the details they will all say the same thing

              * Its big-really big
              * Its Heavy- one of the heaviest
              * Its Expensive- Used car price expensive

              AND:

              * It is an incredible lens that produces
              * razor sharp pictures
              * rich color reproduction
              * Wonderful contrast.

              * No remorse after owning and using this lens. Just praise

              * Repeatedly said: I wish I never waited so long to buy this lens

              SO Remember- No more regrets. There are always solutions to problems you encounter. Life is way to short and those photos keep slipping away every year you wait.

              PS I use the Wimberley head and when the lens is on the tripod it is like moving a feather around. It is like a beautiful dance betwen the lens and the tripod- effortless.

              Lens is a bird & wildlife lens, but great for marco & portraits.

              Super lens. I absolutely love it and find every excuse I have to take it out. Just be ready when you buy this to have to also add on a replacement foot and a new tripod head unless you already have a gimbal style, neither of which are cheap. However, I do not regret this purchase one bit. There also is not any 'lens cover' that comes with the lens so I suggest you invest in one of those at purchase time as well.

              Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

              I've always wanted the new Nikkor 600mm, f4 ED VR AF lens. I've had earlier versions of the 600mm in the past but the focusing wasn't as easy as I thought a Nikon product should be. This new lens wants for nothing - it's simply the BEST! I also own the Nikkor 300mm, f2.8 and the Nikkor 400mm, f2.8 and this lens is as sharp or even sharper than those lenses. I use it for NFL and college football, baseball and soccer. I've also shot whales from the shoreline and eagles in the forest and I just couldn't get those shots with any other lens. It works well with the Nikkor 1.4 and 1.7 extenders and shows no loss of sharpness at all. I know it's very expensive and very heavy, but if you're serious about making sharp images with long focal length lenses, this is the ONLY choice!

                Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

                For over forty years I have hoped to own a good long telephoto for 35mm. Aside from the price, I have been deterred by the difficulty of adjusting the lens while trying to cope with a tripod. Now that the camera can do the focusing, and my Winberley head makes tripod use quick and fluid, I decided to buy the lens and have fun with it until the repo man finds me. Vibration is not an issue.

                This lens is perfect in every way. While large, it is surprising that it weighs as little as it does, and it is easy enough to carry using the supplied lens strap. The lens hood fits securely and once fastened carefully, the screws don't loosen. Sharpness and contrast are superb.

                I haven't tried to use it hand-held. The lens tracks quickly, and any lost shots are due to my aging reflexes, not the lens.

                I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase

                  Excellent lens, not as heavy as I thought. But its size is bigger than I thought.

                  I use the lens for Wildlife and Sports. I have only had it 2 weeks and I can say even though the price is high, you definitely get what you pay for! This lens is unbelievably fast and the image sharpness on my D300s, D7000 or D800e is spectacular!

                  Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

                  Extremely sharp! The autofocus with the D4 is silent and very accurate. The focus tracking is amazing when following a moving subject. Its heavy, but not excessively so, you will need to use a tripod with this lens. The VR has a tripod mode that I have found to work very well. I have used a number to Nikon telephoto lenses in the past this one is the best yet. I sometimes use it on a beanbag from my vehicle window with the regular VR mode, I have found this to work well.
                  I tried to use the Nikon 200-400 f4 VR II, with the 1.7x teleconverter to get to reach I need to capture images. I found that I still needed more reach to get the images I was after. I am very glad that I bought this lens, very fast and quiet autofocus. Extremely sharp images, with the reach I needed. Expensive, but when compared the new Canon telephotos, this lens is a bargain. Buy, this lens you will love it.

                    I thought a long time before I purchased this lens. I wasn't sure that I wanted to pay the price. However, after doing so, I can tell you that I love my lens. I am 60 years old and spend almost every night in the swamps of South Carolina taking picture of birds. I thought I might have a difficult time carring it. So far no problem. The clearity is great and I love the pictures.
