The Nikon AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens (Black) is a premium ultrafast super telephoto lens for Nikon F mount cameras. It is a very robust and durable lens. Its lightweight construction incorporates a magnesium die-cast barrel, and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing allows it to be used in more rugged situations.
This lens features the improved Vibration Reduction (VR II) system that allows handheld telephoto shooting, even in less-than-ideally lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed of about 4 stops faster. In addition, this lens also features the Tripod Detection mode, which reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release, when mounted on a tripod.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
Extremely sharp! The autofocus with the D4 is silent and very accurate. The focus tracking is amazing when following a moving subject. Its heavy, but not excessively so, you will need to use a tripod with this lens. The VR has a tripod mode that I have found to work very well. I have used a number to Nikon telephoto lenses in the past this one is the best yet. I sometimes use it on a beanbag from my vehicle window with the regular VR mode, I have found this to work well.
I tried to use the Nikon 200-400 f4 VR II, with the 1.7x teleconverter to get to reach I need to capture images. I found that I still needed more reach to get the images I was after. I am very glad that I bought this lens, very fast and quiet autofocus. Extremely sharp images, with the reach I needed. Expensive, but when compared the new Canon telephotos, this lens is a bargain. Buy, this lens you will love it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
I thought a long time before I purchased this lens. I wasn't sure that I wanted to pay the price. However, after doing so, I can tell you that I love my lens. I am 60 years old and spend almost every night in the swamps of South Carolina taking picture of birds. I thought I might have a difficult time carring it. So far no problem. The clearity is great and I love the pictures.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
This lens has instantly become my "go to" lens for nature photos. AF is quick and VR lets me use it on a monopod. The only problem I have with this lens is its weight, but there just isn't any way to get f4 without it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
For the cost of a late model Honda Civic (and about the same weight), you expect this lens to be exceptional...and it is. My primary purpose for this lens is shooting wildlife, especially birds. And after using it for a little while now, I firmly believe no other lens exists which meets its abilities. It's tack sharp at f/4 with no significant chromatic abberration along the edges of sharp contrasts in early afternoon broad daylight. Stopped down to 5.6 or 8 at dusk or dawn, you can set yourself up for truly amazing color and depth at such a distance from your subject.
The first time I used it, I felt like I was taking pitcures with a small grenade launcher. But, as is the case with most Nikon products, the learning curve is steep. It becomes an almost thoughtless extension of the camera in no time... until you (carefully) carry it back to the car with a rented diesel forklift. I'm quite confident if I were to try to run over this lens with my truck, the lens would win. Handily.
I've found my Wimberly gimbal and sturdy Manfrotto MT057C4 to be perfectly stable and balanced partners. And, those of you proficient in monopod use will have no problem at all with this lens.

I use this lens for wildlife/bird photography. I have it mounted on a Wimberley II head on a Gitzo 3531 tripod. I also purchased the Wimberley replacement foot. The setup is fantastic. The sharpness is amazing. I use the lens on a Nikon D300 body. The lens is heavy but knowing quality of the resulting images makes it all worth it. It is much sharper than my 70-200 with a 1.7x tele. (Of course). If you purchase this lens, you wont be sorry you did.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
This is a wildlife photographer's dream. Sharp wide open, does not get any sharper stopping down to F8. Very fast autofocus on a D200 and D300s. A low-profile foot that is sturdier is available from Wimberley, Really Right Stuff and other vendors - this is highly recommended for getting consistently sharp results. There is not much to dislike about this lens aside from the immense cost and the size/weight of this monster.
I love shooting with this lens as long as I am strong enough to carry it.

After what seemed like a very long year of contemplation, careful consideration, technical research, soul searching and intense meditation with a wise man in the Himalayas,I decided to buy this lens. Actually none of that is true, I was just saving up. It is a very expensive lens and now that I have it I feel it is well worth the price. I am an amateur wildlife photographer(proficient hobbiest) and being able to reach out there to get that great shot adds yet another level of "Wow" to an already exciting hobby.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
I overbought when I got this lens. As an accomplished photographer with 45 years of experience it was a huge investment and I really wasn't sure I'd be able to fully utilize the capabilities of the lens. I'm not sure what percentage of utilization I'm getting, but what I am getting out of the lens is spectacular. I've had several images published and have consistently turned out a much higher level of work than ever before. In the hands of a wonky professional the lens would be one of the best in the world without question. I do wildlife, nature and some fast-breaking fire/police scenes. The lens just reaches right into whatever scene you are shooting and allows you to pick up much more than you may have realized was happening. If you are in a cold sweat about getting this lens and whether or not you are up to it, you are. Do it. You will not regret for a second the decision to purchase such a fine piece of glass.

This lens is amazingly sharp with very fast auto-focus. It is heavy, but still possible to handhold for a short time and obtain sharp shots. It is everything you expect and more - a true joy to use this lens. Its only drawbacks are price and size.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
This was purchased from B+H and recieved when a friend hand carried it over. (no she wasnt thrilled to learn it was 'only' 21lbs boxed, and not the 32lbs stated on Carton)
Used it straight out of the box, only change was a wimberly foot to replace the Nikon foot. Amazingly sharp, the colours and Bokeh are superb. Whereas the 400mm 2.8 didnt impress at first (it took a while to be comfortable with it, and get the sort of sharpness i was looking for) the 600mm has performed amazingly well from the outset. perhaps the technique learnt with the 400 being the reason. Its not handholdable, (if you are lucky it is for about 1 shot for mere mortals), and benefits from a wimberly head or monopod. VR does help at times, but i generally switch it off and shoot wide open on AP, (thats what i bought it for)quality from edge to edge is absolutely superb, and provided you have good long lens technique, this is a truly amazing lens which is worth every one of the lots of cents it costs!!

I am a wildlife photographer (www.lalithphotography.com) and a Nikon fan. Last month I added (after a deep and deep thought as it cost you really) Nikon 600mm F/4 lens to my armoury and was on shooting sessions of birds and leopards. No two words, this is fantastic! Sharp and quick focusing. I feel it's a must for a wildlife photographer. But it is heavy, I really feel it! So little worried; how should I carry when I travel overseas? Also very careful in handling (it is very expensive and almost the price of my jeep I used for wildlife). Nevertheless I am fully satisfied.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
It's a great feeling to be part of the modern and improved products from B&H and Nikon. I have been a wildlife photographer for 20 years, mainly birds.
It's difficult to remain moderate about the new 600m lens, it's technology is faultless, excellent to use and the images make most of my previous work look ordinary! Before I purchased this lens I remember wondering how far short of my expectations it would fall, nearly all do to some extent. This product is truly excellent in every way and if B&H has other customers in two minds about buying, because of quality, relax it's as advertised. For me the price of the product is reasonable and fair given the capability and quality of the lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:
The 600 F4 is a supurb lens. It is very fast to focus and the VR is very quiet. Image quality still very good with the 1.4x. I have not yet tried the 1.7x or 2.0x with this lens.
My only nit is that it doesn't fit in my LowePro lens treker 600 with the body on the lens, like the 500mm does.
