With its continued excellence in video reproduction, Sony has once again created a portable, ENG/EFP portable VTR, the GV-HD700E HDV Video Walkman. It offers the ability to record SD resolution and playback HDV resolution, view content on its built-in 7" TFT 16:9 LCD screen, or output 1080i/720p signals to an HDTV through the HDMI output. This versatile deck is designed with professional features like x.v.Color Technology, crystal clear still/slow-motion playback, MiniDV SP/LP record/playback, IEEE1394 (DV) interface, component output, and 12-Bit/16-Bit PCM digital audio recording.

The GV-HD700E offers professional reliability and superb functionality in the field or in the studio. Its portable, lightweight design ensures ease of use in a variety of video productions, making it an ideal acquisition tool for producers, directors, DPs, editors, and any camera rig operator.

x.v.Color Technology
Capable of passing the x.v.Color signal recorded by your Sony HD camcorder to your compatible HDTV. With the ability to reproduce nearly twice as many (1.8x) viewable colors.
Video
DV format offers up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution and significantly higher S/N ratio to provide stunning video performance. It offers up to 60 minutes of digital (SP) recording or up to 90 minutes (LP) on one MiniDV cassette.
i.LINK
DV In/Out (IEEE 1394) enables editing or dubbing between another Digital camcorder, VCR or computer equipped with DV Capture Card with virtually no generation loss.
Digital Program Editing
Built in assemble editor lets you mark cut-in and cut-out points for up to 20 separate scenes. Use the walkman as your source while controlling via infrared, almost any remote-capable camcorder or VCR as your recorder.
Audio
Records PCM digital audio in two modes: 16-bit mode for CD-quality stereo sound on one track, while the 12-bit mode records stereo on two tracks so you can add background music or voice-overs.
LCD
Incorporates a 7" color (1152k pixel) LCD screen with Active Matrix technology to provide clear, accurate colors for on-the-spot playback of recordings.
Analog In/Out
Increasing your creative possibilities, analog in/out makes it possible to connect your video walkman to a range of analog devices. Once connected you're able to edit sounds and images between the two and produce original films with a personal touch. Also lets you preserve your analog library by copying it onto a digital format.
Playback Zoom
While playing back your images on this unit, it allows you to edit your images by zooming in (up to 2 times) and cropping your picture (up, down, left, right). You can save the new image as a separate file. Resize lets you save a copy of an image to a smaller or larger file size.
USB Terminal
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a computer industry standard that is designed to simplify interconnection between digital equipment such as A/V devices and computers. It makes quality, higher-volume data transfer possible between your video walkman and PC, printer or other equipped devise via a simple, one cable connection. USB Image Capture function lets you stream live and recorded moving images to PC via USB port.

if you are looking for an all in one unit for your mini dv tapes then this baby does it all. have you got tapes shot in LP and others in SP? maybe you have now upgraded to HDV. this unit plays them all and does so automatically with no complex settings or commands. I have had a sony dsr20 that does not play LP, and had a jvc hd br50 that is not only complex, but limited to certain NL editing programs.
This sony is the only one that can plug and play into all computers (pc & mac) that i have found without needing a small house deposit.
i thoroughly recommend this unit to anyone. it will save your camera heads and its portability makes it something you will never leave at home. once you use it there is no going back!

I bought a GV-D1000 just prior to the introduction of this unit. While the GV-HD700 is good, many features of the previous model have been omitted.PROS...BUT: The screen (3.6x6=7 diagonal) delivers 21.6 of clear, colorful video with many adjustment options BUT you have to slog through a menu to get the 16:9 display every time you power up. It will take two kinds of batteries, both L and M series, BUT they have to be Sony. It has all manner of outputs--HDV, DV, HDMI, Component and A/V--BUT you need Sony's proprietery cables and a penlite to see them. It takes a Memory Stick for photos BUT it has to be a PROduo. There is a menu for just about everything BUT accessed with arrows/buttons instead of wheel/button (which was faster). The screen folds against the body for storage BUT the latch mechanism is a nuisance. The rewind is quick (2:32) BUT not as fast as the two speed GV-D1000 (1:43). The play/pause still mode is sharp and clear BUT won't maintain very long. You can record up to 90-minutes BUT the eject/load cycle is too long. You can use one of three panel buttons to program a Data Code readout BUT it's only date and time; camera data has been dropped. The unit will sit flat on a desk BUT has to be modified with a quick release to clamp onto a tripod or lightstand (no tripod socket). There is an S/VHS jack BUT it's only an input. Hi Def can be played back BUT not recorded.I like the player because it serves my purpose--simultaneous video record with camcorder--but but but. The incompatibilities and annoyances are things you'll have to live with if you want one. Sony could have done better.

      Expertise: 13 years full-time photo/video pro

Problems Encountered: No problems, per se. I just take issue with design deficiencies listed above, particularly the Sony-only batteries.

Previous Equivalent Item Owned: GV-D800, GV-D1000

Items I Recommend: Sony NP-F560 and above; penlite; backup cables.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700E PAL HDV Video Walkman:

I use the SONY GV-HD 700E "PAL" Video Walkman VCR w/7 LCD SCREEN as a playback and recorder. Over the years i had bought several multiple-interface playback and recorders, but, they never lasted. Some were gone within a month or two. I started using digital cameras and same fate developed. I resorted to using my PD 170 DV Camera and HR FX1000E since they were the only facilities that could play the tapes after recording, but the play heads died quickly giving me more troubles. Unitl i sourced for this Sony Gv HDV700E recently online and acquired it. I have just started using it. Its compact nature makes it very preferable. So also is the addtional LCD SCREEN. I could carry it to any production site and continue to do my recording or preview after shooting. It is simple, flexible and a bit rugged. However, it seems to me that the "ON and OFF" (POWER) button should have been more rugged and more of a pressing instead of pushing sideways as it makes it look fragile. So also is the "EJECT" button. They should have been internal and operated by pressing instead of pushing. Again when ejecting tapes, it appears to want to hook and so i have to put it off and on and suddently it ejects itself. I have not started using the microphone fully. Will use it later within the week, but my test-run of it was smooth and my Director of Photography liked the audio quality. Until i use it fully then, i'll definitely have more tales to tell. But for now, i am just enjoying the comfort my GV HDv700E Video Walkman has given me.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700E PAL HDV Video Walkman:

Owning a pro camera that runs on mini tapes - the Sony HD 700 is a now a "must have" item for me,and well worth the hard earned money.

It is a pleasure to be able to reveiw tapes recorded on my camera at days end and later up load to computer.

Several disapointing factors which were indicated in my reveiw research prior to purchase
1/ - the screen resolution is fine - but not "mind blowing" as alot of reveiws may infer.

2/ - The editing capability which has repeated comment in other reveiws - is almost not there (unless there is a button I have not found yet) The unit is a tape recorder and player only - you can't edit on it.

That all said - I know the pleasure it has since added to my filming experience.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700E PAL HDV Video Walkman:

I live in south africa and imported it from BHphotovideo[...]bout the Walkman, Its brilliant for video editing as a reference monitor, the colors are crisp and clean. Its great on the field as well, small, lightweight, etc. The Cons, It's not a true HDV, from what i can gather it can only play back an HDV tape that was recorded on an HDV camera, it cannot record HDV at all, not from the iLink or component. Also I feel the lack of DVCam functionality takes away from the machine, since I have a PD150. The loading times of the tape mechanism is slow and I would like the rewind speeds to be a bit faster. I gave it 4 stars since It's a brilliant monitor for editing SD video, and great as a firewire interface on the field. Its also great for beginners wanting to get into the business. If you can work around the above issues then its a great machine.

              Good, but not great.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700E PAL HDV Video Walkman:
