The Verbatim DVD-R UltraLife Gold Archival Grade 4.7GB Recordable Disc (Pack of 5) is a write-once disc designed to preserve family photos and home movies as well as critical corporate data. Each disc is manufactured using dual reflective layers to maximize both compatibility and longevity. To further extend media lifetime, there is a hard coating on the recording side to protect the discs from scratches. The disc uses a Metal Azo DVD recording dye optimizes read/write performance.
The dual reflective layer technology is comprised of a silver layer for broad compatibility and a gold layer for long archival life. The highly reflective silver layer allows the UltraLife DVD-R disc to look like a standard silver disc to DVD drives and recorders. This feature provides a low initial error rate after recording, important for long archival life, and the same drive read/write compatibility as standard silver only discs. The gold reflective layer, naturally resistant to corrosion, prevents oxygen from coming through the DVD bonding material and corroding the silver reflective layer. Silver oxidation can be a primary factor which limits the lifetime of DVD media.

The "archival grade" feature is what got my attention. Image files were copied onto and retrieved from the DVD without any problems. The DVDs seem to be a good value. My children will probably decide whether or not "archival grade" was hype.

We needed a higher quality DVD-R for burning the DVD master we were sending to a replication house than the average blank most people use. Our timeframe was short in order to produce 200,000 copies on time for a client, and we could not take a chance on an error in the disk. These UltraLife disks performed flawlessly -- we saw no error when we reviewed before sending out the master nor when we received back a replication sample.
