Comments about Giottos Deluxe Sandbag (2.2 lb):

I recently started using a backdrop outside, and found these sandbags to be essential. In place of sand, I used rocks which were readably available. Worked fine for both the backdrop and light stands. I might think about getting the next size up in future...the more weight the better.

This saddle bag has a velcro pouch you fill up with sand AND a zippered compartment to seal the sand in the bag. Works great!!!

Correction to my earlier review. This is the smaller size (even though it says "large," the "standard" is larger). When loaded with lead shot, it now weighs 15lbs, and is very compact.

Comments about Giottos Deluxe Sandbag (2.2 lb):

I bought a few sandbags to compare features. I like this brand best. Seems to be very well made. I also bought the smaller model, which is also nice.
FWIW, I wanted a compact, heavy weight, so I loaded the bags with lead shot instead of sand. This large size is now a 25lb bag.
Will have to wait to see how well it holds up. But I'm not a "heavy user" and I handle my equipment carefully, so I don't expect problems.

Comments about Giottos Deluxe Sandbag (2.2 lb):

I have a rather substantial tripod set-up I use primarily for forensic photography. Since I use my MT9360 with the center column at odd angles (and with magic arms attached to the legs quite frequently), I wanted a sandbag that would protect my rig from tipping. I have a conventional sandbag that I have been less than pleased with, so I looked for something that fit my particular needs.I'll go ahead and say it...[...] Overall, the bag is well-made, with a clean, high-tech look. The ballast compartments are closed by zippers, and have internal removeable ballast bags closed by velcro. This is an ideal arrangement for using various types of ballast. Since I don't like the idea of sand in my kit, I use zinc-plated BBs as ballast. One container of 2400 BBs placed into each ballast bag provides a total weight of about 3.8 pounds (1.9 pounds each compartment). This quantity of BBs does not fill the bags more than about 1/3 of the way, leaving the bags flatter with SUBSTANTIALLY less bulk than a conventional sand-filled bag. Using a form of ballast other than sand results in fewer issues due to water getting on/in the bag (BBs dry out much more quickly than sand). The unique saddle-style arrangement of the bag allows for the body of the bag to be wrapped around a tripod leg, with a velcro strap contained (and permanently attached) in a pocket to secure the bag to the center column/leg joint. The saddle-style arrangement also allows the bag to be wrapped around the tripod case/handles for portaging. I've found since switching to the Giottos sandbag that I am far more likely to have the sandbag with me when I need it because of this. The almost 4 pounds of ballast gives me a secure platform to shoot from, even when the camera is set off to the side and magic arms are attached with flash units and/or reflectors. This bag is particularly well-suited for technical photography, and I plan on purchasing a few more.
