Product Highlights
  • PHD (Professional Heavy Duty)
  • 1/4"-20 Tripod Socket
  • Double-link Construction
  • Optional Anti-Twist Plates

The Stroboframe Vertaflip PHD On-Tripod Camera Rotator (Professional/Heavy-Duty) camera rotator is a fast, convenient tool for rotating your camera horizontally or vertically on a tripod.  Gain speed, convenience and precision by rotating the camera without changing the lens axis, so that all tripod head controls remain in the same position.  Concentrate on the subject rather than fumbling with newly-positioned controls.  Switch between horizontal and vertical compositions with a simple flick of the wrist, keeping the camera's weight balanced over the center of the tripod to minimize vibration.

Especially Useful for Macro Shooting
The Vertaflip proves most valuable when shooting at higher magnifications, as any change in the lens axis results in exhausting changes in tripod position.
Standard 1/4"-20 tripod socket in base and 1/4"-20 mounting knob in camera platform
Durable double-link construction assures rigidity even when using medium format cameras
Accepts optional Anti-Twist Plates and Camera Auto Quick Release
Weight 0.72 lb (327 g)

This is a great product that is well made and I highly recommend it. It is great for shooting group photos and then quickly flipping over for individuals. It can be adjusted vertically for different camera models or those with battery grips.

The large cork area holds the camera well and it's easy to thread the tripod screw. I put a small piece of gaffer's tape on the bottom of my camera body as the rough texture of the tape helps to secure it well to all my stroboframe brackets which have cork mounts. I've used Vertiflip with with a Canon 20D with 70-200mm f/4 lens. I don't know if the product would support a heavy tele lens as the body may rotate on the cork. For those heavy lenses you probably need the rotating collar specifically designed for that lens.

You do have to be careful when using a long lens and s slow shutter speed and/or a windy environment as this can cause vibration. In such a circumstance I'd say you're better off putting the camera directly on the tripod or using a cable release. But for studio work or reasonable shutter speed it's not an issue and the convenience is fantastic. Trying to shoot vertical shots with only a tripod is awkward and this product will really add to your comfort regardless of whether you use a ball head or three way head.

Here's a tip that I discovered on my own. Remove the two screws holding the camera plate. Reverse the plate 180 degrees horizontally and reattach the plate. The camera mounting screw will be horizontally offset from the Vertaflip's tripod hole. Now if you put a body and a telephoto lens on it, the center of gravity will be nearly perfectly balanced over the Vertaflip's tripod hole. I think the product is far superior in this configuration and don't know why Stroboframe doesn't assemble it this way. With small lightweight lenses it doesn't matter which way you turn the plate as balance isn't a significant issue.

I bought this apparatus to use on my camera to make rotating from horizontal to vertical effortless because it kept the camera on the same axis. The first time I attached my camera to it (Nikon D800) with a 24-120 lens, I discover that it wobbles a lot between rotation. when I handled the camera to obtain focus and notice the camera wobbling up and down. SO when I place my hand on the camera, the front of the lens came up and when I depress the focus button on the camera, the lens front would go down. Same thing when I was about to trigger the shutter. So I thought maybe the screws need tightening but I figured it would come with the screws tighten and ready to use. I tried it again and look at tightening the screws, but they seem to be tight and fixed in place. I would need to break the seal to tighten further so I put it back in the box with plans to return. I tighten the screws which made it a little stiffer to rotate but I gain a little more stability, but it still was stable enough. THere was still a little wobble and I realize that the metal bracket that the camera is mounted on was not strong or thick enough to steady the camera. This could be solved by using a thicker metal plate. This should have been discovered during product testing since this bracket is rated for medium format camera too, not just 35 mm. Anyway, it was a good concept with poor execution.

Comments about Stroboframe Vertaflip PHD On-Tripod Camera Rotator:

Works great for portraits but I made changes. First the tripod threads were incompletely tapped. Also found this problem with their quick release I bought. I have a tap set so it was no big deal for me to fix but I should not have had to. Had a problem keeping it centered on my tripod head. So I drilled and tapped a hole for a screw through it and the tripod head. That locked it down. Then I added their quick release to it and I am very happy with the final results. The supplied mounting screws are too long on the quick release and must be shortened about 1/16". Would only recommend it to someone with skill to fix it but it is a great design. I may buy another one for my monopod.

If your tripod head makes the camera unwieldy when shooting in portrait mode this device flips the camera back and forth between portrait and landscape. You will need to revers how the plate is mounted to keep it close to the center of the sensor axis

Sturdy, stable, very quick in operation, and it keeps the center of gravity of camera directly over the tripod. Only designed to hold your rig vertically or horizontally, so if you're looking for something that will allow infinite angles of rotation this ain't it. I don't see that as a problem, but I'm just sayin'... A bit heavy and bulky, but less so than other units I've tried and I can't imagine how one would design and build anything like this that wasn't heavy and bulky, so there we are.

The product itself is a great idea and executed very well. The problem I ran into was that my tripod was already taxed to its weight limit with my current setup. When you add this extra weight then flip it vertical, it made for a very unstable situation. I returned the item and bought a new tripod with a higher weight rating and a solid ball head that easily allows setting a vertical shot. If you are using a light weight camera and a short lens, this would probably be an acceptable alternative if your tripod does not flip vertical very well.

Used this at a dance where the orientation wasn't consistent. The image stayed centered and this was easy and quick to use. Construction is solid but I don't know of a reason that the camera mounting plate at the top is not reversed - reversing it would make the load more centered. I use this with a video tripod that can support the imbalance so it doesn't make much difference but closer to balanced would be good. I like this a lot anyway.

Comments about Stroboframe Vertaflip PHD On-Tripod Camera Rotator:

Increasingly, I shoot portrait shots with my DVX200 camcorder. I have a very solid right-angle tripod adapter that I fashioned from a very heavy angle iron (L-bracket). This give me all the stabilty I need but I needed a better solution for those times when I need to switch back and forth between portrait and landscape. So, I purchased the Vertaflip, but found that it isn't so stable with my video camera as it would be with a SLR, especially in normal; landscape mode it is very prone to shake. The remedy was to velcro a piece of wood as a stablizer behing the rotator between camera and tripod. It is easy to add and take off, and this will work for what I am doing. Smaller consumer camcorders might not have this problem, but the HVX200 is a bit heavy for this device.

Semi-pro: works great every time. Great for landscape and portraits. The price is outstanding. Looks a bit odd on the tripod, however, moves from horizontal to vertical in a split second.

Rotated without give. Super easy to install & use. By far the best rotator for anywhere close to this price range. I use Canon 50d with 28-135 plus on shoe 580 exII and this baby didn't give an cm.

Comments about Stroboframe Vertaflip PHD On-Tripod Camera Rotator:

I use this in my studio and on location. I use a ball head on my tripod so the vertaflip works well when I want to change my camera position to vertical I don't have to make a lot of adjustments.

Ingenious, simple design makes it absolutely effortless to switch between landscape and portrait camera configurations. Rock solid suport, and the multiple indexed screw adjustments allows the lens on my EOS 5D MKII with battery grip to remain nearly centered over the tripod pivot point whether in landscape or portrait configuration, which is a nice feature for shooting multiple sequenced panorama shots.

I wanted a flip bracket to fit on my Manfrotto 233B so I could shoot vertical as well and the Vertiflip works just fine. The Vertaflip is a bit bigger than I thought it would be, but it's very strong and holds my Nikon D200 quite solidly in place. It's also very good mounted to the tripod via a quick realse plate. The height adjustment plate is great for lowering the height of the camera.
