Product Highlights
  • Auto & Manual Exposure Control
  • For Digital and Film Cameras
  • Rated up to 200'

The SeaLife SL961 is a powerful underwater strobe light. Since the strobe will fire with four different pre-flash settings, as well as no pre-flash, it will work with any underwater digital or film camera that has a built-in flash. Since water absorbs the red and yellow light spectrum resulting in blue pictures you need a flash to bring out the intense colors of the underwater world. It also reduces the backscatter problem that normally will occur when using a camera with a built-in flash.

When using the Auto Mode Setting, the strobe automatically adjusts the brightness for optimal image exposure. You can also shoot in manual mode. The strobe features variable flash control enabling you to dial the flash power up or down for better image exposure. Also included is a flexible, rubberized arm for easy aiming and a sure grip. This will allow you to position the flash for the best possible lighting.

Comments about SeaLife SL961 Underwater Digital Pro Strobe:

Look for a different flash system. The Prolife is poorly designed and highly likely to fail. I bought it for a scientific expedition in Belize. It performed almost never. The problem is the system for the Sealife camera signalling to fire the flash, using an optical cable sighted on the camera flash. It almost never worked. All the photos from a night dive came out black. I checked the manual and the website and made all the recommended adjustments but it still didn't work. Buy somebody else's system.

Comments about SeaLife SL961 Underwater Digital Pro Strobe:

I was in the market for an inexpensive external flash to help improve the quality of my underwater shots. An external flash is generally considered a basic requirement for bringing out the colors underwater. I didn't want to shell out for an underwater case for my SLR, so I opted to get this flash and use it with a Canon Powershot SD1300 point-and-shoot. I think it is a good compromise for someone who wants better underwater shots but does not want to shell out >$1000.

The flash was fairly easy to setup with my P/S and came with the fiber optic cable which can be easily attached and detached from your underwater camera case via a provided "velco" attachment.

Took it on several dives down to about 50 feet deep and two snorkel trips with no leaks. Battery life was never a problem for me.

The only complaint I would have is that the auto power mode did not seem to work for me. It seemed like auto always resulted in full power. So I used the flash in manual mode at about 70% power.

Remember that you need to be very close to your subject underwater to for this to work. The ideal range is probably between 3 and 6 feet. Too close and you'll blow your highlights. Too far and it won't have any effect - you'll just get washed out blue color. It takes a little practice.

This strobe worked great for me during my Hawaiian vacation. It took a bit of time to get use to the settings, but that is mostly because I am not familiar with the new camera and underwater settings.

Comments about SeaLife SL961 Underwater Digital Pro Strobe:

I have not yet used this in the water, but the fiber optic connection to my camera housing (Panasonic Lumix DMW-MCTZ5)is very much an "engineering project". I would have expected a kit of various "gadgets" which would allow connection of the optical cable to a multitude of housings. Instead there is one rather large adhesively fastened adaptor that remains a challenge for me to attach to the Lumix housing.
