I Bought these for location audio and audio post mastering. They are closed back and offer a decent level of sound isolation when shooting or working in noisy environments.

They are solidly constructed and fold nicely into the included bag. The detachable cord is a really nice touch, although I have read some reviews that say M-Audio wasn't producing replacement cables, yet when I checked their website they have them in stock.

I won't say they are the best or completely neutral bias because it is highly subjective. I found their sound reproduction to be very accurate and good enough for professional post audio and mixing.

On the downside, they aren't terribly comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The headband spring is quite tight.

    Great sounding headphones!

It came with a defective cable, sometimes the sound would be heard only on the left, sometimes not at all. It took a lot of wiggling of the cable (scattered over 2-3 days) to finally make it work...This incident dissapointed me on the overal quality of the package (headphones + cable), otherwise the headphones themselves seem to be great.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile Q40 Closed-Back Dynamic Stereo Headphones:

I bought these headphones and a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 pads for them. I think these headphones are the best bang for the buck... especially when the bang is BASS. The Q40's have a large bass extension that will reveal very low frequencies that you never thought existed in the song. You might be thinking that the mid range must be recessed in comparison, but alas no! The mids are great! Very clear vocals in every song. The only downside to the sound is that the highs aren't as crisp as I would like. They are still very present, but you can tell that this is a bass/midrange focused headphone. Comfort isn't an issue either (for me). Many people complain about the clamping pressure on these cans and while they are indeed tight, I prefer it that way to reduce weight on the top of my head. Detachable cable, foldable, and comes with a bag. Best headphone I've tried as far as quality/price goes.

I use these mostly to mix songs and recordings, but also to just listen to music. They sound better than the AKG k240s or any similar pair. The Q40s block much more outside noise than any similar headphones, and the sounds are reproduced very accurately. Not extremely tight fitting, but somewhat uncomfortable after a few hours of wearing them.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile Q40 Closed-Back Dynamic Stereo Headphones:

These are just great headphones and seem to be a really good value. I'm not an audiophile, but I found the sound to be very good and clean. There's definitely enough bass. The headphones clamp a little more than is compfortable for me, but I like the wide earcups and I don't find them too uncomfortable, just not as comfortable as possible. The padding on the cups and band is nice.
Overall the construction seems very solid, excpet perhaps the cord. Since the cord can be replaced, though, this probably isn't a huge issue.

I am extremely satisfied with these headphones because the bass on them is amazing! It has crystal clear sound quality and it comes with a extension that you can plug into say a guitar amp and listen to what you are playing through your headphones.
The only problem I've had with them is that a piece of the headphones broke off two days after I got them. But I sent them back in and got a new pair that has been fine (1 month so far) since.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile Q40 Closed-Back Dynamic Stereo Headphones:

I use a number of M-Audio pieces of equipment in my HD Audio/Video production studio. M-Audio is owned by Avid, which is a very well established and film industry recognized digital video editing platform. The Studiophile Q40 headphones fit right in with the two ProFire 2626's I use, as well as the Studiophile BX8a reference monitors. The sound is accurate, and un-colored. This is critical for studio use. The only real down-side I found with the Q40s is that they tend to grip your head rather hard. This is good in some respects (blocks unwanted external noise) but can get a bit painful in a long session. I solved the problem by physically stretching the headband (pulled the cups outward carefully). The pricing of M-Audio equipment tends to be all over the board, depending on the profit margin a given re-seller is trying to make. It is well worth shopping around to get the best price. Once you do so however, the equipment you end up with will really outperform anything else for anywhere near the money spent. The Q40s are quite large, and pretty heavy (about 2 lbs). This is due to the full over-ear design, which is necessary for studio recording. The drivers use high-caliber magnets which also adds weight. Don't let this weight discourage you. The headphones are heavy-duty for the price, and this is what you want.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile Q40 Closed-Back Dynamic Stereo Headphones:

I needed headphones for my home studio microphone so that I could preview and review voice-over recordings on my laptop and edit video. These were what I purchased, and I can't say enough about them!

I heard a lot of hub-bub about how these were a little uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time, but to speak with candor I didn't notice this at all! Clear and crisp sound quality, comfortable, and well-made. The 3.5mm cord that comes with the headphones is lengthy too, which is nice if you have a set-up where your cables have to travel a little distance to the port. 5/5 stars

Product is used in a post-production facility. Great quality reproduction, but ear pieces are relatively tight to head which creates fatigue after wearing for a significant amount of time.

Very good sound in my home studio. Works as intended. I like the removeable full size plugs.

Are a tad uncomfortable after wearing a long period of time. I am used to wearing aviation headsets for extended periods without discomfort, but at many times the price.

For my use, they work well.

Excellent sound quality! Deep undulating BASS and crystal clear HIGHS! Keeping in mind garbage in, Garbage out, sound reproduction in these headphones are precise! External noise cancellation is directly proportional to the volume levels of the music. Paired with an Ipod, these headphones are simply phenominal!!!

The cord has Mini 1/8 connectors at both ends that have threads that allow them to be screwed on to a 1/4 connector. Gold plated tip help eliminate corrosion. Both headphone cans fold into the headband for compact storage and the accompanying case is a nice touch! I love it!

I'm happy I bought these and thinking about buying another pair! I can't say enough about how HUGE the sound is in these things! SIMPLY AMAZING!!!

These are a great value. For the money I don't think you can do better. You could probably get better performance from some other manufacturer but you would pay way more. The highs and mids are good and the bass is fantastic. Although it's the performance that really matters I have to give high marks on the looks, very professional. One negative may be they are little tight on the head but that either seems to go away after a while or I just got used to it.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile Q40 Closed-Back Dynamic Stereo Headphones:

Okay here's my story: I have had these for a few weeks now. I primarily use them with my iPod/Pad. They are my first real headphones so for me they are a huge sonic upgrade. To me the sound is very balanced. With my other stereo equipment (hk soundsticks 2 and rokit 5's) I often use the EQ to make the sound just right. No need to with these. I'm no headphones expert but to me the sound quality is as good as I had hoped (that part gets 5 stars). They do squeeze your head a bit. This is great for me actually as I often use them to tune out when I'm in the same room as someone else watching tv etc and it gives them great outside sound cancellation without having actual "noise cancellation technology". However, for extended listening- after an hour or two that squeezing on my head and ears does get fatiguing and I need to take them off for a while. It's a trade off that suits my needs. If I lived alone and didn't need to block out so much noise I wouldn't like it so much. When you have these on at even a comfortable volume level you won't hear people talking to you. And you won't hear the tv on in the same room. I use these for listening to mostly house, hip hop and r&b on the iPod and Netflix movies on the iPad. The build quality overall is very good but not perfect. The one thing I would change is to make them a little sturdier at the hinge where the ear cups connect. I'm not saying it's flimsy but it would be reassuring if it was a little beefier(metal instead of plastic). I'm sure as long as I don't fall asleep with them on or sit on them they should hold up. In summary if you are an iDevice user like me you can't go wrong. Sound quality amazing build quality very good but with a beefier hinge I would give 5 stars.
