Good use for limited camera gear

    I needed a backpack to accommodate my Canon 1DMkIII camera body and smaller zooms and prime lens: 70-200 f4, 24-105 f4, 200 f2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 lenses plus small...Read complete review

I needed a backpack to accommodate my Canon 1DMkIII camera body and smaller zooms and prime lens: 70-200 f4, 24-105 f4, 200 f2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 lenses plus small accessories and a tripod. Initially, I looked at the Flipside 200 but it was not enough for my gear, particularly, it could not accommodate the 1DMkIII camera body and the 24-105 f4 lens, i.e. not enough depth. Then I research this backpack but was hesitant because I already owned the Flipside 400 AW backpack; use the 400 backpack for my longer lens, i.e. 300 and 400mm lens, because I thought it would be too close in size to justify a similar bag. After visiting a local camera shop, I was able to see the backpack personally and experiment with different gear. I determined that the backpack was sufficient to handle my gear. The bag did not disappoint. However, one thing I noticed is that the tripod (Manfrotto 055xprob) fits nicely but felt a little awkward when compared to the fit on the Flipside 400 AW, but that's because the 300 is a smaller bag than the 400 version. I suspect a smaller tripod would be less awkward. To give an example of what the 300 can accommodate: Configuration 1: 1D3 attached to the 70-200 f4 (less hood), Canon 580 EXII flash, 85 1.8 with hood, 1.4tc and a CPL in the main area and the 50mm 1.8 and the 70-200 hood in the compartment above the camera; memory cards, ID and a bottle of water in the sidepockets and tripod mounted on the back.Configuration 2: 1D3 with 24-105 attached (with hood reversed) with Canon 580 EXII flash, 85mm 1.8, 50 1.8 (below the 1D3 and zoom), camera strap in compartment above camera with 1.4 tc, plus memory cards, ID and bottle water in the sidepockets and the tripod mounted on the back. I have not used the flipside function yet as I tend to have 2 camera bodies with different lenses attached, so no changes on the fly.Overall, the bag is nice and is ideal for my gear. I prefer a backpack as oppose to the slingshot or regular bags because of the weight of my gear; backpack distributes the weight evenly across my back and shoulders and therefore causes less fatigue…for me.I purchased the backpack approximately $20 cheaper at B&H than the local camera shop [...]

I got this bag primarily because of the security factor -- it's one of only two camera bags that I know of (the other ones being in the Crumpler line) that can't be opened while you're wearing them, which as any urban traveller knows is a big risk.

However, I don't carry a lot of camera equipment (DSLR body + two lenses + small flash + Gorillapod) and wanted something that would also fit a few daily essentials (guidebook, a water bottle, jacket, etc.) -- and this bag just isn't flexible enough to fit that purpose. Even though there are a lot of velcro bits on the padded dividers they're actually arranged such that you can't be that creative with how you arrange the dividers. I struggled a lot to find an arrangement that would maximize the space and also keep my camera equipment separated from the stuff I put at the top. The only arrangement I could come up with (placing the long divider diagonally across the bottom) was too awkward to be functional.

Ultimately I felt like I wasn't getting enough flexible carrying capacity for what felt like a sizeable bag. And, of course, it still looks like a camera bag. I've returned it and am going with the National Geographic Walkabout Rucksack, which sacrifices some security but looks and works a lot better for my purposes.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

I just started getting into photography and hiking to find places that I can shoot. With this bag, I've got plenty of room for my lenses and extra accessories. The bag is extremely sturdy and comfortable on the back. Worth every penny and I would recommend every time. I attempted to climb up behind a frozen waterfall but fell and hit every rock on the way down. My camera was perfectly fine in the bag and somehow I was too! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

Based on the photo, I thought this was going to be a low profile, sleek bag.

When I got it, it looks like a turtle shell. The harder outer protective layer extends all the way along the outside of the bag. This all means that if you were traveling, it would be immediately apparent that you have a giant camera bag on your back.

When it comes to traveling, this bag presents another conundrum. It isn't durable enough to be checked, nor does it appear collapsable to be put in luggage. You could bring this on a plane as a carry-on item, but I don't know if it'd really fit under seat, which means you'd end up putting it in the overhead with all the headaches and nervousness that includes.

In short, there are much better bags to travel on planes with. There are better bags for the city, and there are better bags for hiking (ones with more space for water, a raincoat and sundries).

I suppose the purpose of this bag is just to have a consistent, safe, spacious and convenient place to put a lot your camera gear and carry it around. If that's what you are looking for, then this bag delivers.

I purchased this to accomodate a Canon telephoto
and professional camera. It does this very nicely
in addition to two more lenses and flash. There is also enough room for filters. The side
pockets also has space for cards and other accessories. The water bottle holder also works
well. This backpack holds an amazing amount of
stuff securely and compactly. Things I would add are integrated rain cover and a few more attachment loops for adding additional storage.
All things considered it is an excellent pack for the money and I would recommend it.

It's great quality, light and has a place for
everything a amateur want, like a tripod and it has a handle.

The backpack itself is comfortable and the material seen to be a good quality, the same goes for the zipper and fabrication.

The only down side is the color, or if you like the absence of it...

Finally, it's a Lowepro and it has a warranty.

Beware of fake copy of this bag, as the quality of material and craftsmanship are most important for a durable backpack.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

The backpack is very comfortable to carry, I tried even to run with it on my back, when front straps are on you don' t even feel you have it on.
It is very easy to remove contents just by turning it to the front and by unzipping opening. I think it can be done in 2 - 3 seconds. The only thing you have to remember lower front strap must be fastened, but there is no problem with it since it is more comfortable to wear when that strap is on.
I think it is roomy enough for me, there is a space for a camera with one large lens attached plus space for 3 other lenses, flashlight, not to mention about other small necessities. Also some small personal items can be carried there.

The design is solid, secure, and comfortable.

            Storage space is great.

Only four stars instead of five because once open, the inner edge of the zipper cover gets in the way of accessing the inside side areas. The bottom of the pack can be awkward to access as well as the zipper doesn't go all the way to the bottom.

The waist strap is more like a mid section strap if you're on the taller side. I'm 6'2" and the strap is halfway up my stomach. :-/

The pack was very comfortable, and had plenty of room without being bulky. I really liked the access to the camera compartment was restricted, especially on trips to other countries.

The belt strip allows you to turn it around in front of you and with easy and safe access take out your equipment. When is on your back nobody can reach the zipper which gives you peace of mind.

It can fit only one camera body with lenses, flash and other accessories.
                    It's small and compact.

I love this bag. It is great for transporting my gear and it is designed to distribute the weight well - a lifesaver for my back! There is plenty of space inside for storing not just my camera and lenses, but also any additional odds and ends I need to take along. Plus, the inner compartments are velcroed, so I can rearrange them for a better fit or even take them out altogether.

As a note, the Flipside 200 is a bit smaller but is still pretty roomy, so if you have less gear or you want a less bulky bag, that may be a good place to start.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

Perfect bag for my gripped 40D, 3-4 lenses and flash. plenty of adjustable dividers to make sure nothing moves around. And having the back panel open is perfect for walking around in a city or crowded environment.

Carries all essential camera gear: room for 2 bodies, two lenses, flash unit and extra compartments for extras. Side pocket is ideal for SD cards with two pockets, one for exposed and one for unexposed. Water bottle mesh on other side, tripod loop on back. Not accessible from the back so you don't have to worry about anyone opening zippers and taking anything out if you're on a crowded subway or area prone to pick-pockets. With the waist band hooked you can slip your arms out of the shoulder straps and slide the pack around to your front and swing it down so the bottom of the pack lies flat against your abdomen and you can access your equipment without even taking the pack off

The Lowerpro Flipside 300 is definitely one of those bags that comes in handy living in NYC. Protection of your most prized equipment and has enough room for the photographer on the go.
The bag is light and it's enough for me to carry around 2 cameras (1 with lens/1 without) and 3 lenses in each section. The only one small gripe I would have is that it takes a bit of time to access equipment if you are in an area where you have not had the chance to setup.

Great purchase for anyone and it is light and comfortable on the go.
