Good use for limited camera gear

    I needed a backpack to accommodate my Canon 1DMkIII camera body and smaller zooms and prime lens: 70-200 f4, 24-105 f4, 200 f2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 lenses plus small...Read complete review

I needed a backpack to accommodate my Canon 1DMkIII camera body and smaller zooms and prime lens: 70-200 f4, 24-105 f4, 200 f2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 lenses plus small accessories and a tripod. Initially, I looked at the Flipside 200 but it was not enough for my gear, particularly, it could not accommodate the 1DMkIII camera body and the 24-105 f4 lens, i.e. not enough depth. Then I research this backpack but was hesitant because I already owned the Flipside 400 AW backpack; use the 400 backpack for my longer lens, i.e. 300 and 400mm lens, because I thought it would be too close in size to justify a similar bag. After visiting a local camera shop, I was able to see the backpack personally and experiment with different gear. I determined that the backpack was sufficient to handle my gear. The bag did not disappoint. However, one thing I noticed is that the tripod (Manfrotto 055xprob) fits nicely but felt a little awkward when compared to the fit on the Flipside 400 AW, but that's because the 300 is a smaller bag than the 400 version. I suspect a smaller tripod would be less awkward. To give an example of what the 300 can accommodate: Configuration 1: 1D3 attached to the 70-200 f4 (less hood), Canon 580 EXII flash, 85 1.8 with hood, 1.4tc and a CPL in the main area and the 50mm 1.8 and the 70-200 hood in the compartment above the camera; memory cards, ID and a bottle of water in the sidepockets and tripod mounted on the back.Configuration 2: 1D3 with 24-105 attached (with hood reversed) with Canon 580 EXII flash, 85mm 1.8, 50 1.8 (below the 1D3 and zoom), camera strap in compartment above camera with 1.4 tc, plus memory cards, ID and bottle water in the sidepockets and the tripod mounted on the back. I have not used the flipside function yet as I tend to have 2 camera bodies with different lenses attached, so no changes on the fly.Overall, the bag is nice and is ideal for my gear. I prefer a backpack as oppose to the slingshot or regular bags because of the weight of my gear; backpack distributes the weight evenly across my back and shoulders and therefore causes less fatigue…for me.I purchased the backpack approximately $20 cheaper at B&H than the local camera shop [...]

I had to visit the Lowepro site to make sure I bought the correct camera backpack. The one I ordered, Flipside 300, touts that it will hold a digital SLR, 300mm 2.8, and other lenses and gear. My Nikon D300 and 300mm 2.8, with lens hood, take up virtually all of the inside space. Maybe I'm supposed to take the camera off the lens. I could wedge some other items inside, but that lens cost me a fortune. The inside dividers will be used for additional padding to protect my lens.
I have other Lowepro gear, and will probably purchase more. However, I'm disappointed with this particular item. I can see using it with my 80-200 2.8, which would allow me to carry another lens or two.
Find a local dealer to see if this works for you, before you purchase it. None of the pro dealers in my area had any when I was shopping around.

I already own one of these so when I purchased another camera, it was a no brainer to get the same bag. I love the zipper on the inside so I can wear it confidently on my back knowing someone cant run up behind me and steal stuff out of it. That alone is enough for me to get a second one. I also use the smaller flipside too. Great quality! Have had them for a few years. No rips or tears.

I use this pack for hiking and backwoods camping, and thus I care a great deal how comfy it is. It doesn't disappoint! I also do travel photography so I like how you must take it off to open it (it opens along the back).

However, since it opens from the back, it is a little time consuming to dismount and get your camera. Overall, a great buy!

used for Nikon d3100 and assorted lenses plus bits and bobs
Product is very secure due to flap being against wearers back
Very comfortable and enables a tablet to be carried as well which is useful

Be aware upper chest strap is not firmly attached to he case and may come loose -- this does make a difference to the overall comfort when walking long distances

This is a nice pack, looks good and well built. I overestimated how much this pack can hold. This is my fault because dimensions and owner comments talk about overall size, compartment size, etc. Next time I'll know to do a little more research.

The 300 is a great product with an excellent design but I wanted a product that I could grow into as I increase my gear (especially to fit a 150-600 zoom lens). I returned it for the 500 which I am very happy with. If you are looking for a less bulky option to take on the fly when out in the woods, the 300 is a great option!!

I bought this backpack because I wanted to carry my 70-200mm and 2 other lens with couple speedlights. It's pretty much everything I wanted except for one down side. You can't fit the lens hood on the 70-200mm while it is in the back pack. It's too tight of a fit. I have to detach the hood and store it in the top compartment. It still works, but it would be more convenient if it was a bit wider.

Comments about Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

I just hiked a mountain (1000 ft in elevation) and I took this bad boy with me. Since I go hiking quite a bit I wanted a bag that was durable and a place to attach a tripod for landscapes. This bag does exactly that! After I got this bag I decided that I am going to test it to see how the tripod slot holds up. I left the house at 5am and treked to the mountain and finally reached my destination at 6:15am. I had zero issues on the way up, however I'm not sure if it was the tripod or the bag, but my tripod hung a little lower than I would like so on the way down the legs were hitting the cliff side which caused me to bounce off the landing a little bit. Regardless the bag did it's job and I survived! As far as everyday use goes though I find it difficult to get to the camera and slots since you need to take off the bag entirely to get to what you need.

Comments about Flipside 300 Backpack (Arctic Blue/Black):

This flipside 300 backpack has Lowepro's exceptional protection for your camera gear, but there were several features I wasn't fond of....making this bag something I couldn't use and I had to return it. The bag carried the camera weight well, and it was comfortable on my shoulders and back, but the zipper to access the gear was on the underside of the bag (directly against my back). The zipper had a fairly tight "U" shape turn at the top of the bag, which required you to unzip this portion of the zipper track VERY slowly or it would snag. There was also a "fabric lip" that laid over the entire zipper track, and this piece of fabric also slowed down the unzipping process, making access to my gear very slow. I don't fault the bag or the company -- it is still a very sturdy bag that does carry a lot of equipment comfortably. The points I mentioned concerning the zipper just made this bag too difficult to use. (On a side note, ALL my other carrying cases, slings, top loaders, lens cases, and backpacks are ALL Lowepro. You can't go wrong with this brand for caring and carrying your equipment.)

Comments about Flipside 300 Backpack (Arctic Blue/Black):

This bag has in the last 6 weeks I've owned it made it through the deserts of Israel, mud of Portland, and the dirt of New York City. Easy to re-configure, the tripod holder on the outside works great. Interior access makes me feel secure when it's on my back and it balances and sits really well on your torso. Love it.

Comments about Flipside 300 Backpack (Arctic Blue/Black):

I needed a backpack so I could film at an event and this was perfect! It easily held my Sony FS100, extra batteries, 2 wireless lav mics, an on-board light, water bottle, and other miscellaneous camera bag items.

The chest strap made it very comfortable and stable, and easy for me to wear while I was using my camera on a monopod.

Also, I love the fact that the zipper and main compartment opening is on the inside (against your back) so you know that while you're wearing the backpack, all your gear is safe inside.

Holds a K-30 DSLR with attached Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and hood . You can fit 2 extra lenses and a flash or 3 small lenses. Moveable dividers make it very flexible and customizeable. Built very well for the price. Comments on the way the bag opens really don't affect operation.

Comments about Flipside 300 Backpack (Arctic Blue/Black):

This pack is nice looking and feels comfortable against my back. The handle on top is really useful. I also like having the access in the back as this helps prevent theft or pickpocketing from the bag. The major problem is that although it is designed to carry a DSLR with a big lens, e.g., 70-200 f2.8, additional smaller lens and miscellany, the pack has no hip support. The bottom strap doesn't reach my waist and it has no padding. It's only helpful for keeping the back from banging around. Because of this lack of support, I don't think the pack would be good to wear for long intervals, such as substantial hikes. The pack has a retractable pouch for tripod legs but I had a hard time fitting even two of the legs of my travel tripod into the pouch. There is no built-in rain cover and although it's a much more minor problem, the pack doesn't have a built-in microfleece cloth, as my other Lowepro packs do.
