Still looking for the perfect bag...this one comes very close. I own a Lowepro Compurover AW and a Tamrac Adventure 9 bag. The Compurover is too heavy and you have to crack it open like an egg to get to the Camera compartment. The Tamrac is the perfect size, but you have to take the bag off and lay it on the ground or your lap to open the camera compartment, otherwise you risk spilling out all of your gear! Not good.

This Fastpack 250 intrigued me because the side access pocket allows access to your camera quickly without taking the backpack off. Guess what? it works. You really can get your camera out quickly while still wearing the bag.

I bought this as strictly a travel bag. I'm a pilot so I needed a medium sized bag that I could fit in the cockpit while carrying my 40D and 3 L lenses. I also need the top compartment of the bag to carry a few snacks, water and other supplies.

    Okay here's the breakdown.

    Pros:
    1. Slim design, fits in cockpit and on top of my roller suitcase with ease. Also fits very nicely in the space underneath your seat in an airliner.
    2. Side camera access in a serious advantage. I considered the sling packs, but I like the comfort and security of having a full backpack. The sling packs are uncomfortable after a while and hard to position to get your camera out without twisting up your clothes or coat.
    3. It's lightweight and comfortable to wear. Significantly lighter than my other two bags.
    4. Not as pricey as my two other backpacks.
    5. Side pocket fits a good sized Nalgene water bottle.
    6. Medium size and all black color doesn't shout "Camera Bag!" while wearing it.

    Cons:
    1. No all weather cover flap. A major oversight if you ask me. I took the one off of my Tamrac to use with the Fastpack.
    2. No chest strap. I think it needs one.
    3. It's almost a little small. I wouldn't go any smaller than this bag because you'll be leaving something home that you'll want later.
    4. It needs a side or bottom strap that you can attach a monopod to. I'm thinking of having one sewn on. For now I've attached a carabiner to the top handle and strap on my monopod there.
    5. Outside pockets are really worthless. They are sewn in flat and don't have room to expand. You can get a few filters and a flash card wallet in them but that's about it.

Like I said it's not perfect, but I'm giving it four out of five mainly because I like the overall size and design of the bag as well as the convenience of the side access camera pocket.

As in most cases, you often have to give something up to get something else. In the case of the the Fastpack 250, you compromise camera equipment space for daypack space and don't get enough of either. I purchased the Fastpack 250 to be used for carrying camera equipment, some snacks and a light jacket for photo daytrips. While I found the bag to be well made, it lacked the space I wanted to adequately carry the camera equipment I required for photgraphic day trips. Perhaps the Fastpack 350 would have been a better choice, but I preferred to keep the overall size in the realm of what would be accepted as carry-on for a flight. If I were to do it again, I'd forego the daypack and get a mid-sized photo backpack that would carry my Nikon D300, 2-3 lenses, a flash and a tripod. I found the fastpack feature which allows access to the camera from a side pocket without removing the packpack to be novel, but not always practical. In most cases, I just removed the backpack and accessed the camera by unzipping the entire compartment cover. The Fackpack lacks a sternum strap, which would help make the load less likely to shift when traversing rough terrain. Last, but not least, the interior backpack material has a very strong chemical/synthetic odor to it. I tried washing the interior, airing it out and even spraying it with a scented spray. After four weeks of use, the odor is as strong as ever. In conclusion, the Fastpack 250 is certainly better than the bulky shoulder bags I have become accustomed to using over the years, but falls short of what I would consider to be the ideal photographic backpack. Unfortunately, the ideal backpack, if there actually is one, would probably be far more expensive.

I was worried about the size of the backpack but it has room for my Nikon 5200, a 55-300 extra lens, all the misc. gear I carry for the camera, 10" tablet in a keyboard case, with room in the upper compartment for all the non camera gear I carry. Built very well, carries and fit great. The side open option for getting to the camera compartment quick and simple.

Comments about Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

Purchased it for a weekend music festival photo coverage. Needed a bag that was big enough to hold 2 DSLR bodies, 70-200mm, 17-55mm, 11-16mm, flash unit, 15" laptop, plus little room for personal items, but small enough that it would not be too intrusive to other shooters.
Bit awkward to access equipment but it is a sacrifice to fit that much gear in its size.
Overall, it met my expectations, and great value comparatively to other options.

Comments about Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

Bought this for a trip to Far East. I needed a new bag, perhaps for one-time use that would let me carry and protect a specific selection of gear I'd decided to take. I carried a gripped D600, with SB700 flash and 28-300 kit zoom, 105mm 2.8 macro and 50mm 1.8. Also, a 13" laptop, extra batteries, chargers, cables. Also a small water bottle, folding umbrella, guidebook, itineraries, tickets, sunglasses, etc. The good: it held up fine to a lot of shoving into overhead bins, planes, boats, buses, trains, cabs. Everything was well protected. Lots of little interior storage places, and the "cord keeper" that comes with is simple but sheer genius. I KNEW I'd get rained on, so wanted the built-in rain cover, and that drove a lot of my purchase decision. But in fact, while it rained a lot, never while I was out, so I never used it! The bad: when this full, it is HEAVY (not its fault, really). But it's designed to hold a lot, and when fully loaded, the shoulder straps weren't quite what I needed after a few miles, and the waist belt, which is supposed to carry most of the load, since unpadded, got tiring to use. The haul strap is also unpadded, so not real comfortable when picking it up when full either. Don't expect that it is going to be as comfortable as your full-on expedition backpacking pack. With better padding on straps and belt, this nice pack would merit another star. But I think it is a good value if you don't need to carry the kitchen sink and /or don't need to carry your gear for more than a mile or two at a time. It's a well thought-out, competent bag at a reasonable price point, that will protect a lot of gear.

This is a nice well made backpack with about equal space for camera gear and personal stuff. I used this as a carry-on bag on a recent international flight, sad to say this pack does NOT fit under the seat, I had to put it in overhead compartment even on a HUGE airplane, thus the reason for only 4 stars. I also don't think you could fit much more than one extra lens as the compartments beside the main camera spot are very narrow, like external flash width.

It fits my Mamiya 645 well, the divider are easy to adjust and the backpack also fits the rest of my gear easily. It is comfortable to wear, it adjusts to fit and does not get get heavy on my shoulders inspite of that monster of a camera I like to use.

I used this bag to carry my DSLR and three lenses for a week of hiking in Glacier National Park. The bag provided easy access to the camera (w/o taking the bag all the way off) and storage for a water bottle and extra jacket. This bag looks good and held up well to a lot of abuse!

Just took a trip to Alaska with my new Lowepro. I think this product is designed perfectly. I carried my full pack for 10 days and I found it very comfortable and totally functional. Well done Lowepro!

I bought two bags from case-logic but they were not upto the mark then I finally chose the lowepro which is impressive in it's space and design. It holds my two extra lenses, charger, camera with attached lens & hood and extra space sufficient to hold camera/edible.

Comments about Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

I just returned from a short-term missions trip to Peru. I used this backpack to carry my Nikon D600 with a 50mm f1.4 prime, plus my backup Micro Four Thirds G3 with its 45mm prime, 45-200mm telephoto and 14-42mm kit lens. All of this equipment easily fit in the lower half of the backpack, with a few narrow lens slots left over. My 13.3" MacBook fit easily into the laptop slot and was easily accessed and removed for airport screening. Since the laptop slot was rated up to 15.4", the extra space was used to tuck in a small external hard drive.

In the top half of the backpack, I dropped in two chargers, two spare batteries, a LensPen, a blower, laptop power cord, sunglass case, baseball cap, bottled water and still had room to spare. I was able to additionally fit my wife's light jacket at one point. I also did not make use of the mesh pocket on the outside, which could have fit the bottled water.

Even with all this capacity, the backpack slid nicely under the seats of the 757-200 that we took - I imagine that it would fit under most airline seats.

The quick-access slot in the backpack worked like a dream. There were many unexpected photo-ops that I might've let slide if it wasn't so easy to get to my camera. As a lefty, I had to get used to slinging the backpack over my left shoulder, but it makes sense to grab the camera with your right hand anyway and my "conversion" took less than a day. I was also worried that pick-pocketers would find the quick-access slot an easy target, but was happy to find that you can tuck the zippers in the far corner of their track, covered by a flap that's secured by two buckles. A determined thief could still get through the defenses, but at least it's not a unzip-grab-and-run situation. The backpack is also quite inconspicuous and doesn't look like a camera bag, especially after I blacked-out the Lowepro logo with a Sharpie.

The bag is very comfortable, although I did notice a small asymmetry between the two straps, even after I'd adjusted them to the same length. It could be my body shape, but the left strap seemed to "dig in" a little more into my rib cage than the right one. It wasn't enough to make things uncomfortable, but it was noticeable. The padding protecting the camera gear is pretty thick at about 1/2", and I wouldn't be too concerned about most accidental shocks to the bag.

Overall, I did a lot of research online before deciding on this bag based on its feature/price ratio. I'm very glad I chose this bag. It is simple to use, sized to travel, feature-packed and well-built. If I lost this bag (hopefully not with my gear in it), I would buy another in a heartbeat.
