The Canon EC-CIV Focusing Screen for EOS 1D - Laser Matte used a shaping method improved over the EC-C111. It achieves easier focusing and good background blur. It is brighter, less grainy and better balanced.

I was pleasantly surprised how easy this focusing screen is to install. It comes in a custom plastic box that includes a tool for picking it up and inserting it in the camera. My old screen was smudged and so this was an easy fix after I found the old screen hard to clean.

Canon packages everything needed to quickly and painlessly change out the focusing screen: the focusing screen, 'screen tweezers,' instructions, and it all comes in a nice little box.
I replaced the III-series focusing screen in my 1Ds2 with a IV. The slightly deeper parabola in the matte does do a good job of aiding focus.
The viewfinder is brighter, but not "wow" brighter as I was expecting. Perhaps the real benefit will come from squeezing out that little extra light for focus near twilight, or in a dark church.
One great aesthetic point is that the graininess of the III's matte is gone, and out-of-focus areas are rather pleasant in their smoothness. I don't want to use the "b" word, but yeah, you know the one I mean.
Overall a good item. Is it possible to live without? Yes. Is it nice to have if you have a minute and a few dollars to spend on a trivial upgrade? Yes.
