Product Highlights
  • 2.0 Channel Stereo
  • Dual 1/8" Inputs
  • 100W RMS
  • USB Device Charging

The A5 Bookshelf Speakers from Audioengine offer crisp and clear stereo audio output. The speakers, designed with audiophiles in mind, deliver an impressive 50W RMS output per channel. They feature high-quality materials, including Kevlar woofers and silk dome tweeters. These speakers are a great option for anyone looking to add high quality audio output to their computer.

Stereo Output
Each speaker is driven by dual drivers. The 5" Kevlar woofer combines with the 20mm silk dome tweeter for high-quality audio output. The speakers can be connected to any audio device with a standard 1/8" stereo connector.
Rich Bass Output
The speakers feature a clear and strong bass output, which is achieved without the use of DSP or fake bass boost circuits. The wooden speaker cabinet remains stiff at higher volume levels, allowing bass to rumble out of the tuned front port slots.
Custom-Built Design
Audioengine designs and manufacturers the critical components of these speakers, including the tweeters and woofers. Since these are custom-designed units, you can be sure that the cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and crossovers are tuned together for the ultimate in quality.
USB Port for Charging
Because the speakers feature dual 1/8" inputs, they are ideal for use with a computer and portable device, such as an MP3 player. As an added feature, they include a USB port, which can be used to power and charge any USB-powered device. This allows you to use the speakers with your iPod, without draining its battery.

Comments about Audioengine A5 Bookshelf Speakers (Black):

I bought these speakers to listen to music on my desktop computer. They replaced a pair of cheap speakers, so the improvement is very noticeable. I don't listen to them at very high volume levels, but they can be cranked very high and still sound amazing. I've noticed subtle audio details on many tracks for the first time.

My only complaints are (1) when the volume is turned down all the way but audio is feeding out to them, a little bit of buzzy sounds leaks out. If you want them to be silent, you need to stop output of audio to them or turn them off. (2) If no audio is sent to the speakers for some amount of time (perhaps 30 minutes), the first half second or so of audio sent to them gets truncated with some popping static noise. If it's an short audio alert from your email program, for example, you might not hear it, or the distortion will prevent you from knowing what it should have sounded like.

great sound I have been using them for about month and they get a workout with me listening to many types of music and usually very loud when the wife is not around, I would like the subwoofer for some extra deep bass
These speakers are just what I was looking for and saved me hundreds of $$$ If I had to buy a receiver and a set of high quality speakers

Comments about Audioengine A5 Bookshelf Speakers (Black):

I wouldn't reiterate what the other reviewers have said already about the sound quality: the range of sound it can play is phenomenal. Low-quality digital files will rear its ugly head here. however, even with its respectable bass output, I still think that a dedicated subwoofer would make it even more phenomenal.

It's also a beautiful machine in itself. I must also mention the awesome packaging: most speakers come in plastic bag, not this one...each speaker is in its own fabric (cloth) bag. It has a multitude of cables so you can connect it to your computer/audio in almost any configuration possible.

There are couple of nagging things about it that makes it perfect:

        - low volume listening. you can't set the volume too low because the sound becomes uneven; the left speaker becomes weaker...you can test this by setting at the lowest setting then gradually increasing the volume. I thought I was just hearing things until I found a forum thread about this issue...turns out that it's "normal."
        - placement of the volume knob. the engineers placed it on the LOWER right corner of the speaker. why? also, it seems cheaply made and out of place with the rest of the device.
        - I am almost positive that this requires a stand, even when placed on a rigid desk. I may need to pony up on a pair. i will update this review if it even helps with the sound or if it's just for pure aesthetics.

with all that said, the negative is not enough to knock off a star from this review.

oh, if you're considering this, you may want to look at the KRK Rokit powered speakers. I only found about those weeks after I purchased the AudioEngines. these would have been serious contenders on my quest for my ultimate computer speakers. but I have no regrets.

Did lot of research before getting A5 bookshelf speakers, I had used many other top brands, but this one has outstanding sound output in that price range, I connect these for my ipod and and also to my desktop, If these speakers are little bit smaller size and have remote, than it would have been pretty good. Shopping through B&H was very smooth[...]

The speakers are arranged in the classic equilateral triangle. They are superb turned down as well as throttled up as much as I will ever need in an 18 x 22 room. There is a sweet spot, but they are excellent throughout the room.

The Audioengine A5 is a great product. Solidly built, very flat frequency response, and surprisingly full featured. Most impressively there are several ways to get music into these monitors: via Airport Express, via a direct connection from you iPod, via the headphone out jack on your PC or Mac. These speakers even come with every cable you could want so there is no need to buy additional cables to work with your system.

Comments about Audioengine A5 Bookshelf Speakers (Black):

Good sound, but limited input options are a hassle and, despite overachieving for their size, they really need subwoofer support. Jazz sounds spectacular, acoustic/folk also, but rock and heavier tunes aren't as full as they should be on the bottom end. I had a pair of H&K Soundsticks that did a better job with rock/metal, but couldn't match the full mids these produce.

If using an iPhone/iPad or any mobile player you MUST use a line-level input, don't run directly from the headphone jack, you'll be severely disappointed. I hooked up my iPhone via a docking cord that splits to stereo RCA and then used an RCA to 8th inch stereo adapter to plug into the speakers. The difference between this connection and plugging into the headphone jack directly is night and day. Much fuller, far better highs, much broader response. Can't emphasize this enough.

All in all, very good. If you have a lot of jazz/folk/orchestral music in your playlist you'll be very happy. If you listen primarily to rock, alternative or metal, you'd get better bottom end and spend less money with H&K Soundsticks, but if you don't mind the expense, adding a subwoofer to support the A5s makes for a pretty unbeatable setup for mobile/computer output.

I am picky about my audio systems and these speakers bring my computer system to another level. I only wish they had a front cover to protect the speakers.

I purchased these speakers after a lenghty search for iPod speakers. I like them so much I replaced my THX certified computer speakers with these. They come with a full set of cables for almost variation you may need. Debated whether to get nearfield monitors or these. After reading reviews and considering the connectivity options, I believe these were a better way to go. The sound is absolutely great. If you need additional bass, there is a matching subwoofer available as well.

Comments about Audioengine A5 Bookshelf Speakers (Black):

My girlfriend wanted a set of speakers in her apartment to stream Pandora off her Blackberry and tunes off her iPod. After a little research I thought these might be appropriate. All I can say is wow!

I set them up using a standard iPod/iPhone dock -- both the USB power cable and the 3.5mm analog output plug into the back of the powered speaker (note that you don't NEED a dock, but it does keep the setup cleaner and more convenient). There's also a set of jacks on the top but we didnt need these. The dock sits on top of the speaker and it's a nice clean setup. I can even plop my iPhone into it and it charges while playing. Setup took about 2 minutes and was super easy. When she uses Pandora on her Blackberry, we just plug an adapted 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the BB headphone jack right into the analog input on top of the speaker. Again, super easy.

Sound quality is simply AMAZING for what these cost! I've got a full very high-end system in my place and I have to say that at normal listening volume the Audioengines are about 95% of the performance for less than the cost of one of my cables! They're about 6 inches from the wall and bass is tight and punchy, mids and highs are smooth and accurate. We're still breaking them in, but they'll play loud too.

They're solid, well-made, look great, and sound really really nice. In fact, we're streaming Pandora through them constantly now and she's fallen in love with some new musical genres (1950s Latin jazz, Cal Tjader, Martin Denny, Astrud Gilberto) simply because these speakers sound so awesome!!!

And since she hates the look of audio equipment, we didnt need any amps, preamps, cables, etc, etc. It's simply two cute little boxes and an iPod pumping out gorgeous just-about-audiophile-quality sound. What could be better?!

These speakers reside in a science lab with background noise from fume hoods etc. I use it with a laptop and iPod/iPhone. The power options are nice, although an iPod dock would be welcome. They have plenty of umph to slice through that noise and can be cranked for late night sessions. I would buy these again in a heartbeat.

I bought this to listen to my MP3's in my apartment. The sound quality is amazing. When I turn the volume to 33% the neighbors start complaining. I would recommend it to anyone who wants clean sound. The price is a bit steep but I think it is worth it. I have been hunting for mp3 stereo for a long time and have listened to many a systems but this one is the best.
The sound quality is much better than my 5.1 surround sound system and I have started using A5s instead of my surround sound system

Awesome sound. I'm glad I did my due diligence before purchasing speakers. I did not know these little gems existed and probably would've bought JBL/Infiniti/Polk. These things rock! If you have these on your short list, go ahead and buy them, you will not be disappointed. High quality at a relatively low price. They can be heard throughout my house. Great for jamming to your ripped music while working on the computer.....

One tiny little gripe - I wish they had grills. I have 2 young children and worry about their curious fingers poking the speaker domes. My solution was to hide them a bit out of sight..... Out of sight out of mind.....

These speakers are the perfect solution to add sound to a room without any other bulky equipment. It is clear that they were designed to complement Apple's Airport Express, which allows you to stream music from a computer in another room. The ability to plug in an iPod directly also is helpful if you want to listen to a few tracks when a friend drops by.
