Product Highlights
  • Guide No. 46'/14 m at 50mm

The Dot Line DL-DRF14/C Macro TTL Ringlight Flash provides full TTL control (including E-TTL II) with both digital or film SLR cameras. This allows for accurate exposures of closeup subjects. When shooting at extremely short distances, relatively minor movement of lighting and subject results in relatively large changes of exposure. TTL metering eliminates the need for lengthy calculations of exposure, because the inherent loss of light at macro distances can automatically be accounted with ease.

A decent TTL ring flash for the price compared to a Canon. Metal step-up rings are nice. TTL works well but there is no manual power control. Assigned the SET button on my 500D to control flash output with good results. The hot shoe connection isn't very good, retaining ring threads not stout enough to prevent rocking loose after several minutes. The first unit quit working after 6 months. Sent to Dot Line and got a brand-new one, which worked just over a year, perhaps 1500 shots.

Comments about Dot Line DL-DRF14/C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

Used for macro and close-up shots. Nice even lighting and enough power to allow macro at f22 at ISO 200. TTL works well. The instructions say to let it sit for a few minutes after X number of shots, which is inconvenient. I got some really good shots but then it started firing before the mirror flipped up! Got an RMA and sent it back, I hope the replacement will be OK.

This is an easy to use product, as for me as an advanced beginner it´s perfect!!
I use it for macro photography and it helps me to speed up the shutter witch has been an issue for me to get sharp pictures.
You get what you pay for. Sheap but no complicated buttons, just connect and shoot. That´s the best about it.
You could buy a much more expensive flash but thats overkill, this one does the job you want.

I shoot macro for a manufacturing company and bought this light for those really little jobs - I was unable to use it because it wouldn't power on with lithium or alkaline batteries. I exchanged it with B&H for another but it didn't work either.

I bought this flash for my Canon T1i and Canon 100 mm macro lens. It works reliably and as expected. I saved hundreds by not buying the expensive, programmable version. Thread mount is a bit awkward but with this unit you can take macros at f/16 1/200 sec ISO 100 or 200. Flash adjustments can be made from the Canon menu. Very good for hand-held especially when you want a black background.

I'm using this flash with Canon T1i and Canon Macro 100 f/2.8 lens. With 1/200 sec and f/22 I can get uniformly lit and sharp images, hand-held. With careful positioning, even took photos through glass without reflection! Easy to use and can control with menu on camera. Save yourself $350 and buy this or maybe the Vivitar. Better than studio lights if you want to eliminate background from macrophoto; background is all black. I photographed small minerals mounted in plastic boxes; can't even see the box; the mineral is clear and bright.

Comments about Dot Line DL-DRF14/C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

I use this to photograph flowers, plants and insects. Right out of the box I was able to attach the ring-flash to my macro lens and start shooting. Exposure is E-TTL II and you can adjust the flash output from the camera's menu. Exposures were good and the lighting was even. I have used it for portraits and it produces a pleasant effect.

My only complaint is you need to be careful attaching the ring-flash to a lens. The plastic, while sturdy, could be cross threaded easily. The GN is adequate for my purposes but it is a little slow on recycling. I haven't been able to get a clear answer on whether it is safe to use lithium batteries with this unit.

Used primary for bugs & flowere, it does have sugnificant value with machinery and equipment for those hard to explain issues regarding measurements, cracks or broken parts. It is great for details and explinations regarding small items for professional reference. So far not even one complaint, as I understand the angles for the flash attachment and what they are dedicated for. It will be more important to understand over exposure to light or when and how to tone it down. A quick reference with a few illustrations will make this a powerful tool as well as a fun toy. Thanks! Great product at a fair price. Ken

Comments about Dot Line DL-DRF14/C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

Was unsure about how well this ring light would work since the price is so much lower than the cheapest Canon, no doubt because there's just an on-off switch. Took over 200 shots with it this week and found it to work flawlessly with true TTL on my 500-D. Camera allows +/-2 stops flash exposure compensation, I assigned this to the 'SET' button via custom function.

I also like the lightweight straight cord as it can be kept out of the way by rotating the flash head. Coiled cord on an old Pentax flash would dangle in front of the head when shooting at a downward angle, or get pinched between the head and lens focusing ring causing the lens to jam.

Metal filter threads & step-up rings on this brand, not plastic. A great buy.

Comments about Dot Line DL-DRF14/C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

I could not afford the Canon ring flash for my Rebel Xti so I went with this one. I have had no problems. It works great with the Rebel and the Macro lens I have. I use it for nature photos, basically bugs and flowers.
