The Phoenix RF-46N Macro TTL Ringlight provides full TTL control (including i-TTL) with both digital or film SLR cameras. This allows for accurate exposures of closeup subjects. When shooting at extremely short distances, relatively minor movement of lighting and subject results in relatively large changes of exposure. TTL metering eliminates the need for lengthy calculations of exposure, because the inherent loss of light at macro distances can automatically be accounted for with ease.
The RF-46 can be used with the camera set to full automatic mode, semi-automatic mode (aperture or shutter priority), or manual mode, giving you the utmost in image flexibility. In automatic and semi-automatic mode the SmartFlash units recycle almost instantaneously allowing you to never miss a shot.

Been using this ring flash in a variety of situations, both in the bush and on flowers at home. Best thing about it is, that it's so easy to use, gives consistent results, and at a fraction of the price of a genuine manufacturers flash, which for the amount I use it, I could not justify buying.

I'll give three stars to this product because I'm afraid of the "made in Singapore", and the all plastic construction. As any other complex and delicate piece of photographic equipment, it isn't made to be used as a hammer, or any other rough application. This flash has surprised me, from the box out. I've recently decided to go Macro, and started looking for a ring flash that doesn't send me and my family to the public charity, and casually, found this model in B&H.
Well, to make it short, while waiting the flash to be delivered to the Dominican Rep., all kind of doubts assaulted me, because a very bad review appeared about a model that is very similar to this one, and from the same manufacturer.
When I received it, I was surprised with the neat presentation. It is very light wheigthed, wich is important when trying to focus in extreme short distances, with depth of fields that are not deeper than a piece of fine paper.
I've installed it in my Nikon D-80, in front of a 60mm Micro Nikkor, with the supplied adapter ring of 62mm, (adapts to five thread sizes, 52mm,55mm,58mm,62mm and 67mm) and started exploring the possibilities.
Whaoo! It worked pefectly from the very first shot, nicely adapting the flash output to the changing situations, and changes in camera modes I've used. It provides a very nice shadowless illumination in extreme close ups, and even for interior photography it gives excellent light in full iTTL mode, providing you don't exceed the limit distance of about 20 feet.
This flash is a must if you want to do macro (or micro) photography, and just expend a modest amount of money.
Please, don't forget that is only a gadget of a little more than one hundred dollars, but the results are of a flash of a much higher price!

Plenty of light to overpower ambient daylight for close-up isolation; even light. Used on a Nikon D80 Micro Nikkor 60mm 2.8 (old model), TTL works great. Only negative is the screw-mount and adapter - fiddly and sticky, requires patience and time. The flash is not especially robust, and does not have the power for portraits, but for the price, it's a lot of fun if handled with care.

I used this with a 40mm ringlight for macro photos of circuit boards for documentation and test procedures. Works well with TTL light settings. Use the Macro program for best results. Much easier to use that gooseneck light pipes and less expensive. With a little care, it should last a long time.

Comments about Phoenix SmartFlash RF-46N TTL Macro Ringlight for Nikon iTTL:
I use this for macro photography on a D7000 and Sigma 105mm macro lens. It works just fine on close-up objects but runs out of steam before you get very far from them. It does what I expected it to. It's light weight and all plastic but seems sturdy enough as long as it isn't abused. I'm not sure I'd toss it into my camera bag with a few lenses and bang it around.
It lost a star because the first unit I received was defective. The plastic insulation on the wire had split exposing the internal wires. The unit still worked but I doubt it would work for too long before the wires flexed and broke. The second unit received works just fine. I've used it with NiMH and Alkaline cells and seem to get a lot of shots per set (>100). I think this unit works fine as a macro flash but doesn't have enough power to be used as a general flash.
My RMA with B&H went extremely well. The RMA number came almost instantly and I sent a picture of the problem to customer service and they replied almost instantly as well. Free return shipping label and the exchange unit was shipped the day after B&H received the defective unit. The unit received in exchange appeared to be an open box item but though the box was torn and the tape undone the flash was in new condition.

I have used this light to take lots of photos of lenses and small items I have listed and sold on Internet. Prior to owning this I had great dificulty getting details to show up. Items sell much faster now. I used to have a wireless ring light that I paid over 400.00 for that was hard to use and cumbersome. This is so simple and light I love it.

Comments about Phoenix SmartFlash RF-46N TTL Macro Ringlight for Nikon iTTL:
I recently purchased this flash for macro photography and since using it have certainly had more keepers. I opted for a ring flash so the light source would be as close as possible to the subject and find it does the job very well. It is light weight which is a bonus as I shoot hand held. I am still using the first set of batteries I put in and it's still going strong after just over 200 photos. I did find it a little awkward to attach the first time. Overall for its price I am really happy with it and think it delivers good value for money.

Comments about Phoenix SmartFlash RF-46N TTL Macro Ringlight for Nikon iTTL:
I have had a Tamron 90 mm macro lens for about three months and the addition of this Smart Flash ringlight has definitely improved my shots... faster exposures, uniform lighting, more indoor and shade shooting opportunities. While of lightweight plastic and having a larger component that attaches to the hot shoe than probably necessary, so far it appears to be a bargain. As recommended by others, I have been careful not to attach it too tightly to the lens and adapter ring. Durability is still a question.
