Product Highlights
  • Guide No. 46'/14 m @ 50mm

The Phoenix RF-46C Macro TTL Ringlight provides full TTL control (including E-TTL II) with both digital or film SLR cameras. This allows for accurate exposures of closeup subjects. When shooting at extremely short distances, relatively minor movement of lighting and subject results in relatively large changes of exposure. TTL metering eliminates the need for lengthy calculations of exposure, because the inherent loss of light at macro distances can automatically be accounted for with ease.

The RF-46 can be used with the camera set to full automatic mode, semi-automatic mode (aperture or shutter priority), or manual mode, giving you the utmost in image flexibility. In automatic and semi-automatic mode the SmartFlash units recycle almost instantaneously allowing you to never miss a shot.

I originally purchased a Vivitar equivalent for my Rebel T2i with Canon 100mm Macro lens, which I could only get to work well in Manual settings.
This one worked correctly, straight out of the box in all the auto settings of the camera (full auto, P, Tv, A, custum, and Macro).
For dental photography I selected Apperture priority at f29 and ISO 800: -the flash automatically adjusted to 1/200th sec and even though the shutter lingered well past the exposure, no blur or artifacts showed up despite me moving the lens around during that time.
I opted for 2 sets of the 2600mAh rechargeable batteries which works great and with very fast recycle times, and now I always have a spare charged set.

I use this for macro shooting. It does a good job as far as light output, but the construction looks and feels really poor. Unless you have fully charged batteries, it will misfire often. Overall, it is a good buy for a starter ring flash.

Comments about Phoenix SmartFlash RF-46C TTL Macro Ringlight for Canon E-TTL II:

The unit fired once and showed promise, but then never fired again. After trouble shooting to no avail, I packaged the unit and sent it to the manufacturer for repair. Assuming it worked, the unit is very good for the price. Included are 5 metal adaptor rings to fit a range of lens diameters, the construction is decent and mounting is straight forward. The directions were not very concise and there was no explanation as to certain features (the adjustable angle of the power pack/flash head, for example). The flash ring also doesn't sit firmly in one orientation, but rather rotates wherever the cord pulls it. Not a problem, though, I suppose. Overall, if it worked I'd sing accolades of the unit, but it doesn't.

I have only used it for a couple of days, but I would say this macro flash works very well for the price and is a great beginner macro flash. It provides the lighting that I was missing by just using the built in flash on my Canon EOS 20D. I now have much better lighting for macro insect photography with my Sigma 50mm lens.

Used for close up and macroIt puts out decent lighting for casual users who don't want to spend several hundred dollars for a Canon unit. It comes with all the adapters you should need and it interfaced nicely with the camera. The instructions could be more detailed, no where does it state that the output is determined in part by the angle of the power unit.

The TTL exposure system seems to work wellm and most iages are exposed properly.

As you would expect, I use this for macro shots and it generally works well. It lacks a number of features from the Canon and Sigma (far more expensive) ring flashes. It can only be adjusted from within the camera memus, no controls for FEL. Nor can you adjust the ratios, angles, or diffusion. That said, it nails the ETTL exposure, even on some tricky subjects. Needs to be parallel to any reflective surface or uneven lighting can result. All that said, this is an excellent value and works well with my 5D2 and 40d.

Comments about Phoenix SmartFlash RF-46C TTL Macro Ringlight for Canon E-TTL II:

I use this for macro shooting. It does a good job as far as light output, but the construction looks and feels really poor. Unless you have fully charged batteries, it will misfire often. Overall, it is a good buy for a starter ring flash.

Just arrived today. I placed it on my Canon, with my 90mm macro lens, and started shooting beautifully-lit shots right away. It even kept up with burst-mode, so important in Macro, when your focal plane can change drastically. I own both the Canon MR-14EX, which will let me model shadows, and output. But, the Smart flash is...well, smart! It gave me consistent exposures.
