The Rycote Undercover pads are a disposable mount and windshield used for mounting lavalier microphones underneath clothing. There are 3 sheets of 10 pads (30 pads total) supplied in each package. The pads are double coated with a peel-off adhesive and a soft-woven material. The adhesive is peeled onto clothing, providing a tacky mounting surface for lavalier microphones. The woven fabric disc is placed over the microphone and adhesive surface, sandwiching the microphone and eliminating structure and rustling noise caused by movement of clothing, cables, etc.

I use the Undercovers for Production audio for film, TV and documentaries.

I was surprised at how well it works mounted directly the the chest when using a side address mic like the Countryman EMW. Still have to be aware of clothing issues and so forth.

As confirmed in other reviews it does not work well with the Sennheiser ME2 since the capsule body is so much larger, that being the case nothing is going to replace medical tape and the other tricks of the trade.

    Awesome alternative to lav clips!

    By Christa

    Pros

    • cheap
    • Doesn't Damage Fabric
    • Stealthy
    • Very sticky

    Cons

    • Some Clothing Noise

    Best Uses

Comments about Undercover - Lavalier Wind Cover (White):

I use Undercovers at all of my weddings, promos, and most of my interviews, they are fantastic. They do a great job at hiding mics which is great for both photo and video. They stick really well, but never leave residue on skin or fabric. For interviews I can reuse the same sticky maybe 3-4 times, however I never reuse the stickies for weddings to ensure it's nice and secure.

    Cons:
    1) The felt covers can be a little snug on lavs that aren't teeny tiny, this is easily resolved by stretching the felt though.
    2) You do get some clothing noise if you don't position it perfectly in a gap where clothing won't overlap (against the neck under the collar is best)

Only reason I'm not giving these a 5th star is I do wish there was an improved way to avoid clothing noise when the person is moving their arms/shoulders. Maybe if the felt was thicker, or a two layer system or a rigid cage on the outside to prevent fabric from touching the felt... clothing noise is pretty much the only thing that could use improving on this product, but, they do work so well I use them all the time. I wish more DJs and officiants would use Undercovers at weddings to hide their mics for the sake of the couple's photos and video.

Received this a few days ago and have already used it on a few shoots.

I needed an effective and easy way to hide a lavaliere mic and this is it. It's easy to apply and can be placed virtually anywhere on the subject. It can be easily hidden. Great product.

Comments about Undercover - Lavalier Wind Cover (Black):

Purchased these to use for a webseries shoot. They really do stick well on just about anything. Skin. Clothes. Had very little issues with it falling.
The only negatives about this pack is that if you're not careful when removing the felt circles, they will fall out everywhere. Very loose inside the plastic bag. So, just be careful taking them out and you'll be fine.

Comments about Undercover - Lavalier Wind Cover (Gray):

These things are great. Keep in mind that you will still get rustling noises depending upon where you stick this. Two tricks:

For women, this works well if you can stick directly to the skin, just inside the shirt, in between or above the cleavage area. This area for most women isn't in contact with their shirt and therefore, you're less likely to have the shirt rub against the mic.

For men, I stick under the collar and run the wire of the mic down the back. The underside of the collar is not visible by camera and doesn't come into contact with other parts of clothing.

Comments about Undercover - Lavalier Wind Cover (Black):

I am a wedding filmmaker so I need to hide lav mics all the time. What I found is that the undercovers actually created more rustle noise then just simply placing the exposed mic under a shirt.

Comments about Undercover - Lavalier Wind Cover (Gray):

I love these things. They make quick work of hiding mics and help prevent clothing noise quite effectively. There are many times when subjects clothing won't allow for the standard clips that come with most lavs. Undercovers solve that problem. Only issue I've had is that the stickies came loose on a silk jacket. Otherwise they seem to stay safe and secure in most situations.

Comments about Undercover - Lavalier Wind Cover (Black):

We did our first video shoot with it yesterday and it worked perfect and was super easy to use. Used the sticky part to tape our Sony lavalier microphone to the inside of the female talent's shirt and then put the black fabric over it. Her long hair also draped over the area with the microphone and we had perfect sound. I was amazed during the edit today - no crackles, no drop off, no inconsistencies. Best of all we never saw the microphone and never had to fuss to adjust it during the 6 hour shoot.[...]. I had been specifically looking for a vampire clip and he said we should try these out too. Glad I listened 'cause it really saved us!
