I bought this to accompany my Canon Vixia HF10 camcorder, specifically for an overseas trip. The camcorder came with an adapter/charger which connected to the camera for external powering or charging the batteries on camera, but you can't use the camera and charge simultaneously using the supplied charger.
The batteries used on the HF10 and its successor is usually the 809, which has very limited runtime. For use at a social event or other place where AC is available, the CG-800 allows you to leapfrog the batteries, one running while one charges. It also makes for much lighter traveling and stows easily in a camera bag, since it has no cord. Its plug-in prongs fold simply into the body, and the battery attaches easily.
It also is compatible with overseas power. I simply attached a European style outlet adapter, and it worked perfectly, recognizing the change to 220/50HZ. Some countries catering to US tourists have a few US type outlets in the hotel rooms, but they are at a premium when traveling with a family so it's nice be able to use local power.
There is an amber light indicating the attached battery is charging properly. This light turns green to indicate charging done. This is handy, but some type of level indicating bar would have been useful.
While this takes the place of the corded adapter, it would have been nice to have a terminal allowing it to power a camera via an adapter cable.
I didn't get around to timing the charge cycle, but it was probably well under two hours for an 809 battery. On our foreign trip this was never a problem.
Having not faced a surge, I have no idea whether or not this is surge protected. Perhaps that was not a design consideration because this is not intended for connection to a camera.

But it could have a power cord... If you try to put a big battery in this, and then stick it to a wall, you're going to see the whole thing falling to the ground... better use in a floor plug.
And it doesn't show the "charging" light with batteries that are not canon, like pearstone.....

I bought an aftermarket universal battery charger that was suppose to work with the Cannon batteries. It showed that it had charged the battery but when the battery was attached to the video camera it showed that the battery required a charge. Lost a whole day of live action video. I thought that I needed a new battery.
After buying this product I charged the same battery and found that this charger fully charged the batteries. I have not lost any action videos since I started using this charger due to uncharged batteries.
I highly recommend buying this charger over a universal charger.

It does it's job so I can't fault it in performance, but it is grossly overpriced. Accessories like this are essential to have and unfortunately it was not included with my HF-G10. I understand the need for Canon to make some additional profits off its accessories line, but this seems a little much. I seriously debated purchasing it, but in the end, felt it was necessary to have the option to charge at an AC outlet instead of having to plug in the camera.

I got this to charge my XA10 batteries. It would be great if canon Included one with the camera. I don't like leaving my camera out to charge the battery, nor do I trust aftermarket chargers and batteries so I went with this one even though the price is a bit steep. It's a lot smaller than I thought It would be, which is great because it fits neatly into my camera bag. It would be nice if it had a power cord, then I'd be able to put it on my desk next to my DSLR battery chargers instead of under the desk on the power strip.
What's interesting is the packaging is also for the model with a power cord (CG-800E) but I wasn't able to find it for sale anywhere in the USA.

I bought this to accompany my Canon Vixia HF10 camcorder, specifically for an overseas trip. The camcorder came with an adapter/charger which connected to the camera for external powering or charging the batteries on camera, but you can't use the camera and charge simultaneously using the supplied charger.
