    The built-in mics on the HF-100 / HF-10 / HF-11 are, to be blunt, incapable of good sound ( self-noise AND handling-noise ).

Excellent camcorders, but good grief, are they hobbled by their sound, as ALL such camcorders are.

    This mic provides 3 modes,
    mono-Shotgun,
    stereo-90-degree, &
    stereo-120-degree.

For video, you probably want the stereo-90-degree mode most of the time.

    It's got a built-in shock-mount, in its stem.

It's got significantly less self-noise than the built-in mics.

Compare, however, with the only slightly more expensive Rode Stereo VideoMic, and I *think* you'll find the Rode much better ( I haven't got both here at the same time to compare, unfortunately ).

Had I the option, the resources, and the time ( before this particular project ), I'd have got both ( and a tripod-mount-to-hotshoe-bracket, to mount the Rode on, since Canon's gone over to the Dark Side with their proprietary hot-shoes ), and compared 'em directly against each other, then returned the poorer-sounding one.

Do I regret spending this much money on the DM-100?

No: I NEED better sound than what the camcorder mics provide, and this makes a big difference.

I do have to keep the levels low ( so the background noise *just barely* nibbles at the bottom of the on-screen meter ), to minimize the self-noise, somewhat, though, and that means less signal to work with in post.

Ideally? I'd have got a good UHF Wireless system with lavs, but that'd cost MUCH more.

Or, I coulda got the Sony ECM-957 & just wired it to the camcorder ( stereo-mini extension cable ), and had MUCH better sound, though I'd have picked up every sound for a quarter mile, with that little gem
and been stuck with the wire & the mic-stand & shock-mount, which wouldn't work in many situations...

It's directional, it's selectable pattern, it fits the camcorder, it's compact, it automatically fixes a couple of menu-entries when plugged onto the camera ( no Wind Suppression setting available with it on -- use the softie it comes with ), it doesn't require extra batteries, it communicates to whom you're recording that you're serious ( worth a bit, that :), and it improves sound noticeably.

Worth it, but consider the alternatives
    ( Rode Stereo VideoMic $,
    Audio-Technica Stereo Shotgun mics + shockmount + adapter $$,
    UHF Wireless + Lav $$$, etc )

Nice to have this as an optional to the small mics on the HF10 camera. The directional settings works, but not as good as it should be on this microphone. The wind-shield is nice. The construction looks a bit weak. There should be a better mic for this small hot-shoes also. Make sure that you fasten the mic enough when using it.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

It is always on my Canon HF20. It works well, does as advertised and picks up the sound very well. Since I am not a pro, I am satisfied with my purchase. But I do feel the price was a little to more. Closer to 100 bucks would seem more reasonable.

    Otherwise it works great.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

The external microphone is used with a Canon HFS-21 camcorder to film lectures in a large hall with high ceilings and a large open area. Results with this external mic results in improved sound over that of the internal mic but not not as much as hoped.

Recommend not leaving the camera in auto for volume but manually adjust the volume to up the level.

The size and the way it fits in the camera without needing batteries or wiring is a plus.

      • Now It's A Paperweight

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I bought this to work with my Vixia HF camcorder years ago. It worked great. However, now that I am looking to get a new camcorder, Canon no longer puts an accessory shoe on their mainstream camcorders. This fully functional and very effective microphone will become a paperweight because Canon requires me to spend over $1000 on a camcorder that supports this.
I'll buy some other $400 camcorder and spend $250 on a shotgun microphone that works with anything, all while holding a grudge against Canon for letting me down with short-sighted product design that makes their accessories useless.

Provide video services for non-profit organizations in and around Tampa, Florida. The mike does very well, even in windy outdoor shoots. It is simple to set up, requires no separate battery, and just simply works. At first I thought price was an issue, but checking the market has taught me differently.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I've noticed an improvement in audio quality when I record my acoustic guitar videos. Not a huge or great one but clearly noticeable, especially outdoors. I like the ease of connecting it to my Canon vixia hfs-100. I don't like the fragile plastic shoe connection and lack of a fitted carrying case.

I use this while recording church services.I use a Canon VIXIA HF G10. Works better on stereo 90. I'm about 30 meters from the subject and have overhead speakers a few feet away from where I set up. It does a good job projecting out away from surrounding chatter and background noise. Real clear for its size. I like the mini shoe hookup which switches automatically. I can monitor and adjust it on my screen.

It does the job for an on-camera mic.
Alas, Canon only has the tiny proprietary hot shoe.
This gives much better sound than my in camera Vixia. S30.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

This was an addition to my HF G10. It's an expensive improvement over the on board mics. The mic fits nicely on the camera and works as well as a small unit might be expected. It's inconvenient to have to turn the camera off to change settings on the mic. There's a learning curve with the settings and knowing when to use each one. It's also a good idea to set the mic input levels manually so the audio doesn't clip.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I use this microphone on my Canon Vixia M500 for filming hunts. Does a great job of picking up my voice while whispering and the sounds of the animals in the woods. Wasn't sure about spending the extra money for an external microphone, but this one was definitely worth it!

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

Convenient! No need for wires or additional battery concerns; this works the same as the built-in mic, i.e. no need to turn on/off, and it runs on the camera's battery. This is the main reason I purchased it.
Sound is good, though, honestly, I haven't tested/compared to similarly priced microphones.
If you don't mind using external batteries and aren't afraid you'll forget to turn on the external mic during a key moment/event (eg. wedding vows), this is a quality, convenient mic to use. A little pricey, though.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I used this mic to record a live handbell concert. For those of you who are not familiar with handbells, they are a very difficult intrument to record due to the nature of the soundwaves and overtones they produce. This mic picked up all frequencies from the highest to the lowest bells and did so very accurately. The mix and balance was wonderful througout the range and had a nice, flat response. It did not distort the treble bells, which is often a problem for live recording, yet it picked up the low bass beautifully without coloration of the tone. I highly recommend this mic for anyone recording live music. I cannot find anything negative to say about this mic... it's that good!
