Product Highlights
  • Zoom Telephoto

The Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro Lens is a telephoto zoom lens that has a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 which remains constant throughout the zoom range. It also offers an excellent "close-focusing-distance" minimum of just 3.1' (0.95 m) throughout its entire zoom range, with a maximum macro magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at f=200mm. When mounted on an APS-C sensor size digital SLR camera, it provides a focal length equivalent of 112-320mm.

Di (Digitally Integrated Design) is a designation Tamron puts on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. Features like LD glass elements and Internal Focusing put this lens in the same category as the much bigger and more expensive professional Tamron lenses.

LD Glass
Two LD glass elements reduce various aberrations while minimizing the fall-off of light at the corners
Internal Focus
The lens neither extends nor contracts physically when focusing; all moving elements are contained within the lens barrel
Di Design
Digitally Integrated (DI) design lenses are designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras
Tripod Collar
The tripod mount (included), detachable in one touch, is made of magnesium alloy that reconcile lightweight and high rigidity, resulting in enhanced balance and ease of use in hand-held shooting

If you are like me, you are interested in creating great photographs but you do not make a living by selling them. If that is the case, this is a great lens for you and you will be very happy with it. Before buying this lens I looked at all the options and read all the reviews. I fought back the urge to pay twice as much for L glass, and I weighed the pros and cons of image stabilization vs a faster lens. The bottom line is I am extremely happy with this lens and I would make the same decision again. Below is a summary of why I chose this lens over the various canon 70-200mm L lenses:

    Canon f/2.8L IS II
This is the ultimate lens in this category and if I was making a living from my photographs, it is the lens I would buy. That is not my life, however, so it was not worth the $2,500.

    Canon f/2.8L IS
Mostly the same as above with an older IS system. Still costs $2,000 so it was still out of the question for me.

    Canon f/2.8L
This was a little tougher because it is the L lens equivalent of this Tamron lens. The reality for me was that this lens still costs about twice as much ($1,400) for very minor improvements in sharpness and a quieter USM motor (the AF motor on the Tamron is not loud, it is just louder than a USM motor). It also has weather proofing, but since I do not allow my lenses to get wet that does not matter to me. I have owned L glass in the past and they are great lenses, but they are not twice as great by any means. My experience is that you pay about twice as much for about a 5% improvement in image quality.

    Canon f/4L IS
At $1,300, the trade-off with this lens is losing 1 stop of light to gain image stabilization. It was not a trade I decided to make because when you have to choose between them, available light is still more important than image stabilization. A faster shutter speed will stop camera shake, but IS will not stop a moving subject in low light (it will compensate for you moving the camera, but it will not compensate for your subject moving - only shutter speed will do that). An f/2.8 lens will give you a shutter speed that is twice as fast as an f/4 lens. There is an overlap in the benefits of shutter speed and image stabilization, but for me faster shutter speed is a benefit a greater percentage of the time. The f2.8 IS II lens listed above is the best because it has everything: f/2.8 aperture, image stabilization, and L glass; but that's also why it costs so much.

    Canon f/4L
The lure of this lens is owning an L lens for about the same price as the Tamron lens. The obvious downside is the f/4 lens is half as fast as the f/2.8 Tamron (the shutter moves half as fast for every 1 stop of light you lose in the lens). I told myself years ago that I would not by slower lenses because I invariably ended up in low-light situations when slower lenses would not get the job done. Additionally, if you ever use a 1.4x teleconverter to make the 70-200mm lens a 98-280mm lens, you lose 1 stop of light which gives you an f/5.6 lens that is very slow. The same holds true for the f/4L IS lens above.

The Tamron lens is a great lens and I have no regrets in buying it. The images are sharp and the color reproduction is great. If you have money to burn and can't fight off the urge to buy an L lens, then knock yourself out. If you don't have money to burn, you can have this great lens for way less money and still be very proud of your results.

    Happy shooting!

I have a Canon 70-200 f2.8L Lens, but the reviews of the Tamron lens showed it as being much sharper and so I purchased it. I have Parakeets which fly around in my house. I fitted my 5DII with the Canon lens and took shots of the birds sitting in various different places, as they fly around quite a bit. Next I fitted the Tamron lens and took the same shots. By the time the lens would focus, the bird had flown. So I got NOTHING. This is a lens you would probably 'grow old with' because by the time I could find something that this lens would focus on, I needed to shave again. On the bright side, this lens is sharp and the colors are true.I feel bad that I have to return this lens, but I'll always remember the sweet whirring sound it made while trying to focus.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS DSLR Cameras:

I purchased this lens to be use primarily for my motorsports photography business, but to also do some other photography with it as well. This lens has issues! In manual mode, the lens is extremely touchy on finely focusing. The focus also creeps after taking the shot, resulting in having to continually refocus. In full auto mode, the lens refuses to find the focus on a subject. The focus just goes crazy, from one extreme to the next. Sometime the auto focus will not move at all! I have had my camera checked and it is not the camera. I had another Canon photographer use the lens with the same issues. I do not recommend this lens! My original review and opinion of this lens has changed since I first received the lens. Don't waste your time with this lens.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS DSLR Cameras:

I purchased this lens as an addition to my other lenses for my business and to use primarily for Weddings, motorsports and other sports photography. The lens performs as good, if not better than the more expensive line of lenses. The only thing that kept this from being rated at 5 stars is the lens seems to creep out of focus in manual mode slightly and auto focus seems to have a hard time focusing in low light situations.

I use this for a multitude of shots and have been very happy with the image quality so far. I am not a pro, I use it as a dad, friend and just to play with a Canon T1i DSLR. I am finding that fine line between shutter speed and lens length to be challenging as I am way to used to using VR lenses. I need to get used to setting the shutter speed instead of relying on aperture alone as I have done with my slower lenses (with VR). I have taken some crystal clear portrait shots and a few great distance shots, this really seems to be the perfect lens for anywhere there is room to use it. I would recommend it so far highly (5 stars).

without $- $ to drop on some Canon L glass, this fits my budget nicely. So far, I have used this lens for nature photography, and some night shoots, I have Wedding video planned and this will do PERFECTLY for my secondary/walk around camera! In daylight, this seems to autofocus just fine, not perfect, but it suits me. I will say it is hit or miss in low light, you NEED to find something high contrast to focus on. I really need to take this to some indoor basketball games and give it a go. Chromatic Aberration only noticeable at the far zoom. SOOO much better than my canon 70-300. Ive done just a little night photography with it, and i can shoot 1/20 second at 200mm.... I just recommend taking a burst of shots without Image Stabilization, we should all know that. Attached to my camera body (T3i), it still fits in my Lowepro fastpack 200 (a medium size bag) so thats a huge plus in my opinion. Canon's is too large for that! The macro is there, but its not amazing. my Canon G15 shoots much better macro. So I still use that for wedding ring closeups. The lens feels very solid, no question there. The focusing and zoom rings are large and give you a solid grip as well.So far, I really do enjoy this lens, it dwarfs everything else I have. this lens really solidified my commitment to becoming a REAL photographer.Note: Photos were edited in RAW only. Also, I have had the lens just 2 weeks

In a nutshell: The "macro" is a joke; it is THE NOISIEST lens I have ever used; it is exaggeratedly heavy; the clutch focus switch is cumbersome and an odd/unnatural design; slow focus; the images are consistently soft. It took be about 48 hours to decide to return this lens.

I am a professional newborn photogrphaer but all of my portrait lenses don't do so great at the play ground. This lens is used at the playground with my kids and for serving on the media team at church. Contrary to other reviews mine DOES focus pretty fast! It is sharp even at 2.8. My only complaint is the zoom ring isn't so smooth, but I don't care much about that. I wanted a great recreational lens at a great price and this is it! I thought I would only use it for personal use, but I would definitely take it to a family shoot.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Canon EOS DSLR Cameras:

I bought this thinking about using it for action photography since I was hired for that kind of photography, I was silly enough to be extremely excited about it that I completely overlooked the specs of the lens and focused on the focal distance.

Still, this is a great lens! I just happened to bought it for the wrong reasons but I highly recommend it for portraits, macro photography (as the name of the lens implies), street photography, in short, conditions and events that does not require a super fast focus. It is a little bit difficult to focus at 200mm even with AF.

It is very heavy so I would recommend to use a monopod if you're going to use it for a long event or photoshoot to have some support but overall this is an excellent lens, I highly recommend it.

I use this lens almost exclusively for concert photography, and it has been brilliant. It has sa very fast auto focus and the colours it picks up are beautiful. It is slightly heavy, and when the light is very low it does lack slightly, but otherwise it is a fantastic piece of equipment.

This lens is used in low light church photography, without being in their face. The speed is fine for weddings, First Communion and other events.

Finally getting to use this lens after having it two weeks I took it to Cades Cove in Tennessee and got some AMAZING shots with it. Being able to go from a f/4-5.6 lens to a f/2.8 changed everything!! Yes the lens is a little on the heavy side but that is a given with the 70-200 f/2.8's. For the price you pay I say it is a bang for my buck! Seeing people complain about shooting a fast moving sport or something and focus being slow... I did not see that at all!
