Product Highlights
  • Zoom Telephoto

The Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro Lens is a telephoto zoom lens that has a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 which remains constant throughout the zoom range. It also offers an excellent "close-focusing-distance" minimum of just 3.1' (0.95 m) throughout its entire zoom range, with a maximum macro magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at f=200mm. When mounted on an APS-C sensor size digital SLR camera, it provides a focal length equivalent of 105-300mm.

Di (Digitally Integrated Design) is a designation Tamron puts on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. Features like LD glass elements and Internal Focusing put this lens in the same category as the much bigger and more expensive professional Tamron lenses.

LD Glass
Two LD glass elements reduce various aberrations while minimizing the fall-off of light at the corners
Internal Focus
The lens neither extends nor contracts physically when focusing; all moving elements are contained within the lens barrel
Di Design
Digitally Integrated (DI) design lenses are designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras
Tripod Collar
The tripod mount, detachable in one touch, is made of magnesium alloy that reconcile lightweight and high rigidity, resulting in enhanced balance and ease of use in hand-held shooting

My one and only complaint, slow focusing.

Build quality is good. Operates smoothly. Focus is accurate. However, regardless of focal length, it is extremely slow to focus in even moderately low light.

I am comparing this to the focus ability of my former Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS. This Tamron does not even come close in the focus department.

However, if you're looking to save over the cost of the Sony equivalent, and do not regularly shoot weddings or indoor events, this is a good choice.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta SLR:

It's a great lens for the price. The image quality is comparable to a $ + lens and it performs great on my Sony a65. My only complaint is that is the autofocus is a bit slow and should not be used for action shots.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta SLR:

I couldn't justify spending twice as much for the newer Tamron 70-200 that doesn't have VC in the Sony mount. Sony's in camera VC does a good job with this lens. The only reason for a 4 star rating is the slow focus at times, but that I knew this after reading several reviews in my research before purchasing. When using this lens indoors in poor lighting I simply switched to manual focus.

The lens is heavy, but that is to be expected with any lens of this focal range. I would recommend using a vertical grip attached to the camera body to balance the weight of the lens when hand holding. The included tripod ring and lens hood are a plus.

Been having a ball getting acquainted with this lens.I'll take pictures of just about anything but I prefer wildlife, macro and grandkids. The f/2.8 arpeture is giving me more versitility with all types of lighting and the solid build gives confidence of it's durability.Like most lenses though there can be some drawbacks.Wide open at 200mm. pictures are a little soft(not surprised).Stopped down a little or back off on the reach and pictures look good. The auto focus is quick enough to stop birds in flight with good light. Not as fast in twilight but thats what manual focus is for.

You certainly read and knew all the PROS & CONS from the other reviewers, there isn't nothing to add. IMHO, I always relied on the excellent optics quality of Tamron, accepted the slower Tamron's AF as i do not shoot sports and am happy with its results at $. I am pretty sure that there is no other 70-200mm f2.8 at this price can match Tamron's sharpness.

A great 70-200 for the Sony Alpha mount. Missing some of the features of lenses 3X the cost, but sharp through the zoom range. Focus hunts a bit in lower light situations. In better light it locks on quickly and acccurately. Chromatic aberations not noticable at all. Good, sharp lens.

Purchased this lens for a friend (I used to own one before upgrading to Sony's SSM lens)

For the price you can't go wrong. Any other option costs twice as much since they all include ultrasonic motors for AF. If you're on a tight budget or don't need ultrasonic AF motor this is your best choice.

The only con is if you're shooting in dimly lit environments (concert halls, theathers, etc), you might find the lens having a hard time focusing.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta SLR:

I bought this lens to pair with my Sony Alpha body to take photos of canine performance events (flyball, agility, lure coursing, et cetera). In bright to moderate light, this lens is fantastic for action shots. It produced really crisp pictures with great color reproduction. I like the design more than the Sigma counterpart since the focal length cuff is just forward of the mono/tripod mount and you can adjust the zoom with the hood in the stow position. I was impressed with the build quality, as well.

The only complaint I have with this lens is the auto-focus mechanism. The focus didn't seem to grab the subject as quickly as I would have liked. If the subject was a black dog (or any object with dark coloring or low-contrast), the auto-focus mechanism had a tendency to hunt, particularly when the light levels began to fall.

Also, it must be noted that seeing that it's a DC drive motor and not a piezo (ultra/hypersonic whatever) motor, it's going to produce a whirr. This is fine if your subject will not be affected by the sound. It is also necessary, if you're going to use manual focus, to disengage the drive motor with a switch on the left side of the barrel and engage the manual focus cuff by pulling it to the rear about 3mm.

If Tamron made this lens with a faster piezo-motor driven autofocus, it would be absolutely perfect.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta SLR:

I recently purchased this lens for my Sony a77 slt. This is a great match up, since Sony SLR's have stabilization built into the camera. I had to make a micro-adjustment of +4 to get sharp performance from this lens. The compression and bokeh quality of this lens is awesome.

I would highly recommend this lens to other Sony users. I can't speak for Canon or Nikon performance, because I don't use those products.

Overall, this lens is a great value.

It does the job, image looks real solid.
The focus is a little touchy, but its built well and solid.
I haven't seen the Sigma and Sony equivalent, but I have to imagine this is equal to or at least right behind those lenses.
It works for me and I would buy again.

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta SLR:

Very good lens. I have enjoyed taking several pics with my Tamron. pics are very good and fast. the auto focus is almost perfect and this lens take great indoor low light pictures. if you don't want to cough up the $1998.99, then the Tamron is the way to go!

Comments about Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta SLR:

I bought this lens to take pictures for dance and concert performances of my grandchildren. venues prohibit using flash equipment, and this fast lens was perfect while sitting in the bleachers thirty to fifty feet away from the action.
