This monolight is a perfect light, whether you're shooting in studio or outside with a battery pack. It's lightweight and inexpensive, offering you a chance to grab other items from BH's wide variety. On first impression, the body has a nice feel to it. It's sleek design has a fantastic rubber texture, which I really like. The body and mounting bracket seems to be made of some type of plastic, perhaps ABS. I wish the mounting bracket were made of metal, similar to the 400W/s model. Compared to the 400W/s model, the 300W/s model is missing the on/off buttons for the sound and optical sensor. Everything else seems to be the same. As others have mentioned, there is control for the sound and optical slave sensor; This means that they are always on. I would not recommend bringing this to weddings, receptions, and similar events. For those, opt for the 400W/s by Westcott as they have controls to turn both sound and optical sensor. The beeping sound doesn't bother me as I'll be using it in a studio or on-location. It's helpful to know when the device is ready to fire another go. I'll be covering the optical sensor with a screw/nail cap in the hopes that it won't detect flashes; in case on-location friends decide to snap their own photos. The modeling light has two three settings: 0 for off; I for constant maximum output; and II for variable output depending on the power dial. I usually just put it on maximum, and then turn it off once I've had the correct setup. Lastly, since there is no auto-dump feature on this particular model, the device must be fired every time you turn the dial; so it can refresh to the correct power output.Included in the box were the following: • Westcott Strobelite, with flash tube, fuse, and protective cap already attached. • 100W modeling light. • 7" Reflector. • Mini-PC sync cord. • Power cord. • Extra fuse. • Manual. Additionally, attached are more pictures, as this product only had one image.

I was looking for a low power, variable power (with clickless dial button) mono light. Something I can get 2 or 3 for when I want to travel light. I've been using Dynalite packs+heads for the past 20 years. I was considering getting two Dynalite Jr. 250 Monolights.

Then I saw this! For the price, it looks great! The design makes it look better than some $600 units. Comes with a 7" reflector - my Dynalite grids fit right in. Has a quick recycle (better than other units in this price range)! I couldn't resist! I bought it!

So, i take it on a job... and guess what? You can't turn off the AUDIBLE "READY BEEP". For that one reason, I returned it. How much would it cost to put in a on/off switch on the "beep"? $10? $20? Fix this issue and I will buy it (i'll buy two or three) and even recommend it to my friends/colleges and students.

Imagine having three of these beeping while u shoot. And if you have them at different power settings, each is going to beep at different intervals. So, you will hear not one, but three, LOUD beeps (BEEP...... BEEP............. BEEP...) after each shot.

        Comments about Westcott Strobelite Monolight:

If you need bigger light that plugs in, this is your light. It isn't winning any races, it isn't winning the "be quiet" game, it isn't winning the most adjustable controls. It is winning in bigger light than a speedlight and quicker recharge times without overheating or extending the delay.

Again, you can't think this is going to compete with einstein's or profoto...but if you need some cheap light that adjust from 1/4 to full power and can stand hearing beeps then this is your light.

This will not overpower the sun. Indoor studio background lights...perfect!

I got one as a back up for portraits. My speedotron power pack went out. so I started using the Strobelite MonoLight. I used it all of 2013 for 88 Portrait sessions. $[$] Strobelite vs $[$]to replace my Powerpack? I chose to get another Strobelite and two more I will be ordering soon....Beeping came in nice, during a sessions. .Recharge time is fast enough for portrait sessions..Like Like Like the Price and the product Thank you Westcott.Cons: Tilting lock needs to improvement.Umbrella lock also needs improvement.

I can't understand Westcott to make a nice strobelite that does an annoying BEEP sound after every flash.

              No way to disable it!

I regret that I did not spent $80 more to get one with a mute button.

Nice Little light. Great for those learning off-camera lighting, or small portrait shoots, or as a non-key light for larger shoots. I'm a photography student and I use this strobe for single portraits and headshots.

Yeah it beeps. No, you can't turn it off. More helpful than annoying. Don't let the poor reviews turn you off this strobe. Who cares about a little beep?

                          Comments about Westcott Strobelite Monolight:

This light maximizes bang for the buck. With its continuously variable power and max power the light is powerful and feature packed at a low price point. Construction is solid, wired flash works as does optical slave mode. Only two annoyances:

                          1. Wire sync falls out of my D700
                          2. There is a beep when the light is ready...doesn't bother me but it might bother you. No you can't turn it off.

That said I almost always use an optical sync so the wire can be ignored and again the beep doesn't bother me....

I plane to get another (if I don't opt for the 500 W/s strobelite plus)

I already own a pair of Westcott's Strobelite Plus and picked this up as a third light. It is very versatile and although not as powerful as the Plus's, it provides the lighting I need for my studio setup. It has a very good feature set for the price. I wish the optical slave function could be turned on and off, but at the price I can live without that. Great Light.

                              Comments about Westcott Strobelite Monolight:

Pros: I have not found another strobe head that has this amount of power for the price. This was my first strobe light ever, I have been doing natural light photography for years now. It is amazing. I am a portrait photographer, and the 300 ws is enough to light everything I will need. I have been using this to light my subject AND my background on a dime: I have my model stand about 2 feet from the white wall in my studio, using this one strobelight in a 5' softbox umbrella (octobank, but generic brand). On even about half power with a reasonable aperture for portraits (6-11 apx.) and the subject is lit and the wall is a brilliant white that is exposed properly from head to waist in my headshots. Amazing! Very easy to adjust power output from 1/4 to full. Also, it says it takes 2 seconds to recharge the flash at full power- I have shot 10 full power flashes in a row with only about a tiny bit more than a second of recharge time between each.

Drawbacks: The beep... it doesn't bother me but there is no way to turn it off. I wish there was a simple mute buton, but it does let you know it's ready to fire again. ALSO... the sync cord that came with this falls out of my d700 so easily that I have to wrap it around my lens and hold it with my finger. Maybe it's just a defective sync chord.

All in all, amazing flash for beginners or someone who wants a great light to add to their setup- it'd be such a great hairlight on a boomarm too!

Awesome light for a small studio. Plenty of power. Excellent light with soft box. Only con is that you cant turn off the flash cell, so it flashes when any flash goes off in the room. I wrapped it with black tape problem solved

                                      Comments about Westcott Strobelite Monolight:
