Comments about Sony ECM-957PRO Mid-Side Stereo Microphone:

As a father two girls I am trying to capture as many moments of my daughters' lives and have never skimped on cameras. I use a high-end camcorder and now a DSLR to record video but when I would play it on my HDTV/surround system I found the sound quality disappointing compared to the video quality especially when recording school performances. I looked at several shotgun microphones before purchasing this one. While it may not look like your typical video microphone it certainly fit my needs. What I particularly like about the ECM-957Pro is the stereo imaging which most shotgun microphones sacrifice in favor of isolation. You can set it to either 90 or 120 degrees and you can rotate the mic capsule depending on how you position the microphone. I have used it now on both my camcorder and DSLR and the difference in quality between it and the onboard mics is night and day. I have also used it separately with my Sony PCM-M10 while recording video using the camcorders mics so I could compare the audio quality. Now I am finding it hard to shoot video without it. Having the PCM-M10 allows me a lot of setup flexibility. I sometimes use the PCM-M10 as a pre-amp between the ECM-957Pro and my DSLR since setting the levels on the PCM-M10 is much easier. Other times I will use the ECM-957Pro to record front left and right channels and the PCM-M10's onboard microphones to record surround channels. I can also move the ECM-957Pro and PCM-M10 closer to the stage while shooting video from a distance.
For use as a an on-camera microphone the cord is a little long so bought an XLR-5 Pin plug and I will make a shorter cable. I will probably get a shock mount as well.

Comments about Sony ECM-957PRO Mid-Side Stereo Microphone:

i use this mic with a repurposed satellite dish and a digital recorder.
what is great is the directability of the mid capsule; I was able to angle it to fit it at the focal point of the dish. Also the little light that tells you if the battery is still good means peace of mind. Talking battery; this mic is not battery hungry. The mic is not as sensitive as I first expected it, but with a dish it is just right. Very low noise. For recording bird songs it sounds good. It may not have much low end, but I do not need it.It comes with modular attachements for versatility and a windshield.

Comments about Sony ECM-957PRO Mid-Side Stereo Microphone:

Very low noise; very good sound quality; good signal level; reasonable battery life; standard AA battery; mid/side design works well for a single-point stereo mic.

I'm using this with an Olympus LS-100 and it's a good match - not quite as sensitive as the built-in mics, but with a better sound stage. Moreover, it's half the price (or less) of similar mics from AT, Beyer, Sennheiser & Shure.

Comments about Sony ECM-957PRO Mid-Side Stereo Microphone:

I did my first interview with this microphone last week and it turned out really well. The mic is extremely sensitive and pics up sound from very far away. I think the mic is best used on its stand. If you move it around, you will pick up lots of handling noise. Stereo separation is great. A nice touch is that it comes with a nice carrying case that holds the mic, windscreen, cable and stand.
