The EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens from Canon is currently Canon's longest telephoto lens, and an excellent choice for any long-distance application such as outdoor sports, wildlife, and photojournalism. Even though it has a long 800mm focal length, the magnesium alloy used in the construction for this lens makes it lighter then the 600mm f/4L lens, weighing in at less than 10 lb.

This lens shares the same lightweight, weather-resistant construction as the rest of the L-series super telephoto lenses, as well as their improved control layout, weight distribution, and mechanical manual focus. Its two-mode Image Stabilizer system allows the use of shutter speeds up to four times slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. Mode 1 is best used for still subjects while Mode 2 is optimized to pan with moving subjects.

An ultrasonic autofocus motor enables fast, smooth and quiet AF action, while a focus preset function allows you to store focusing positions and return to them in an instant when needed. An AF stop button will pause autofocus with just a touch and manual focus override allows precise manual focus even in AF mode. A focus range limiter function lets you to save time by establishing a focus distance range for your specific subject.

For optimum visual performance, the lens incorporates four types of special optical elements: aspherical elements to correct spherical aberrations, and refracting Fluorite, UD and Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements to eliminate secondary chromatic aberrations. An integrated, rotating tripod collar provides balance and stability and the rear drop-in filter slot and holder enable easy filter use. A large lens hood, hard case and lens caps are included.

Magnesium alloy construction keeps its weight comparable to shorter telephoto lenses.
Two-mode image stabilization; dual-axis camera shake correction or vertical axis only (for panning)
AF Stop function shuts off autofocus when obstruction appears
Focus preset function allows for returning to a specifically set focus by turning a ring in front of the focus ring.
Focusing range limiter function lets you set the focus distance range for shorter focus times. The three ranges are 19.7' - infinity (full range), 19.7 - 65.6', and 65.6' - infinity.
Full-time manual focus override
A tight seal structure ensures excellent dust and moisture resistant performance.
Built-in rotatable tripod collar
Fluorite, Super UD and UD (ultra-low dispersion) lens elements minimize aberrations and help to produce an overall sharp, high-contrast image.
Super Spectra coatings reduce ghosting and flare.
Circular aperture produces attractive background defocus.

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

This lens is very well made, like other L-series Canons... Even with extender 1.4x III, the sharpness and quality is remarkable. Yet to find a light-but-stable stand to carry this lens and camera body around...

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

I have owned this lens for about three months now, and all I can say that NO other lens will even comes close to beating the picture quality of this lens. I have tried the new 600mm f4 ii of canon. It is a fantastic lens, but in order to get the same focal length you need to use 1.4x TC (slightly larger at 840mm). The picture quality is not comparable to 800mm. I have seen so many review on internet that the new 600mm would make the 800mm obsolete, but I beg to differ. I have done extensive testing of the two lenses, and in every test the 800mm came superior in picture quality and sharpness and vibrancy. I also own Canon 300mm f2.8 ii and Canon 500mm f4 ii. They both are state of the art lenses, however, the 800mm is superior in picture quality compared to both of them. May be I have recieved the perfect copy. You can study the MTF charts and listen to all kind of reviews, but nothing beats what you see when the pictures are laid in front of you side by side. If you need the focal length and have the money, this is the lens to get. There is not much difference in weight when you use the 600mm f4 ii with 1.4x TC iii and 800mm, but believe me that there is a big difference in picture quality.

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

I have only had this lens for 10 days and I am amazed at how this lens tracks birds so well. It was not hard to find the birds through the lens and then keep them in view, shots were very sharp. I also took pictures of whales from quite a ways away and the pictures were so good I didn't even have to fix them in Lightroom. Even with the wind blowing about 25 MPH this lens was still tack sharp while on my tripod. I really can't name anything about this lens that is not great. It is just a little bit heavier than my 400 f/2.8 so you can take some shots while just holding it. Where the 400 f/2.8 did not reach far enough for me, the 800 f/5.6 takes care of those long shots. I didn't have any problems with it being a f/5.6 instead of f/2.8. I would highly recommend this lens!

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

This is an amazing lens. The pictures are beautiful. The autofocus is super fast. It is very light and easy to handle. I didn't realize that it actually came with a hard case, so that was a plus for sure.

My first shots that I took with it were of my 2 sons in action. The pics were very sharp. Then my 6 year old and I shot a pic of the moon during the day. The details and close up of the moon was amazing as well.

I look forward to using it for taking pics and shooting video of airplanes.

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

I shoot allot of pictures and love Surfing and Skiing. I tried the new 600mm II Canon and loved it. Then i tried this lens. Bought it ASAP. I have 400mm 2.8 and 200mm 2.8. I also purchased the 1.4 III tele conv with it.

WOW i tried on 5D MarkII 5D Mark III 1DX, 7D and talk about best glass!! If you like birding, or surfing, skiing, or foot ball this is a must lens. Perfect. I tried the 600mm II but needed the tele 1.4. I got not so many keepers not sharp around edges and did not use all the fancy focusing spots Canon added on 5DMark III and 1DX.

Then Shot some surfing, birds and Skiiing with the Canon 800mm no converter and no comparision. Forget the math charts. The end result is a crystal clear perfect edge to edege picture. It is allot of money, but worth every penny. B an H Staff will tell and help out with all your needs. Get a polorizer filter too. It makes the skys pop, snow white, trees green and gets that washed out look off your photos.

Thanks B and H and Canon.

This lens will give you the edge over everyone else who does not own it. The photos it produces are award winning, and no one can touch you with their tele converter rigs. This is truley the best lens I have ever purchased.

I shoot both Nikon and Canon. But this 800mm beats all others, nikor, sigma, you name it! this lens lets you stay away from the crowd, and hide, and get great close ups. It is so light!! I shoot it with out the wiberly head. I mean it is lighter feels like at least then the 400MM 2.8 canon. It is not as long as the reviews say.

Just looks like a 400mm 2.8. Love the case. (Same as the 400mm) I did not have a problem with the light, just use shutter priority. Great at all F stops I got this surfer at f11 and you can see the kelp in the splash, and a zit on the guys face. I mean crystal clear. B and H had the best price and next day air shipped. This lens is a better investment then the stock market! All canon lens's seem to go up in price. So if you need an argument.

              1. Great investment
              2. Beat out other photographers, as they dont have this lens 600 with tele can't touch it.
              3. Crisp saturated colors and crystal clear perfect photo's
              4. Make Award winning photo's
              5. Make money as a P.I. or selling sports photos
              6. Count the fleas on the neighbors cat!!

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

This lens is heavy, large and well, repeat WELL, worth carrying around. Autofocus is quick. Quality is excellent. Some have commented that long lenses are like looking through a drinking straw. I don't find the narrow field of view that extreme but still need practice in quick and accurate aim.

I do wish the 800 would autofocus with a 1.4 extender but that does offer some practice in long-neglected manual focus skills.

The Kata TLB-800 PL Lens Backpack has already proven itself excellent in getting the lens and camera to the scene of the action.

I use this lens for wildlife exclusivly. The sharpness of this lens still surprises me. It may only be f5.6, but with my 1DMkIV I can shoot in very low light and get amazing results. In fact I see more detail in the images when I download them than I see when I'm shooting.

JUST AWESOME!!!!!!! This lens will get you as close as you want. Very sharp, clear and heavy. You can hand hold it for 2 maybe 3 shots and thats it.[...] I've had the lens for 2 weeks and plan to go out bird watching at the local santuary. I wish Canon would include the 52mm drop in screw filter holder in the purchase. Now with the current situation in Japan because of the devistation this piece is on national back order with no indication of when production will start up.

                  Use for wildlife shooting.

This lens "gets you out there".. Then you have the 1.4 and 2.0 extender for the next State !!!

I have the 500mm too and been using both. They are truly a joy to handle. I am 75 and "NO" I can't hand hold ..but sure can mount them fast on a tripod.

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

We use the lens mainly for bird photography. We are still learning how to use this lens. The issue we have is how to take tack sharp images at a higher rate. Huge magnification comes with this lens, but a cost of easy vibration. Any tiny vibration from the camera, the tripod and your hands would be magnified enormously. Thus blurry image results. You would think the image is sharp, but not until you blow it up 100% on your screen to find out it is not tack sharp.

If the image is blurry, it is operator's error. When the image is tack sharp, the detail is just out of this world. I shoot raw and there is no in-camera adjustments for color, sharpness, and so forth. In its raw format, the image is incredibly sharp, extremely detailed, and its color rich and vibrant.

What can I say? One of the excellent super telephoto lens that Canon has ever made so far. I even go so far as to say it is the sharpest super telephone lens that Canon makes.

super fast, super sharp and so much lighter than the 600 I also own.

As a bird photographer this lens paired with a Canon 1D Mk IV is simply as good as it gets. Sure its expensive but you super telephoto lens ever made period

I use this lens for wildlife especially birds. Week one I captured tack sharp images of an osprey catching a bird and carrying it off in flight. Beats a 600mm with extender any day.

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

Far exceeds my expectations. Largest lens I have ever owned. I have been a little apprehensive about getting it out of its case in public. Huge lens - gets lots of comments from strangers. Fast focus, easy to get used to. Once you get used to the 19 feet focus minimum, it is absolutely a pleasure to use. Like the 1.4x and 2x extender capabilities.

Comments about Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens:

I am an advanced amateur using this lens primarily for bird photography. I will also use it for general wildlife and occasional sports photography. Coupled with my Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III body I can capture images of birds that I previously only could dream about. Incredible image sharpness astounds me. I have just recently received the new 1.4xTC III and 2xTC III and can't wait to try those with the 800/5.6. While many reviewers have mentioned the weight as an issue I don't have any complaints when I use my gimbal head and a sturdy carbon fiber tripod. That being said, I do notice a little shoulder fatigue if I carry the rig around for very long treks. Otherwise, the images that I can create with the "pulling power" of the 800mm focal length more than soothe the minor discomfort. If you are really into birding I strongly recommend this lens and the new third generation teleconverters. It's almost like having your own little Hubble telescope.
